Thank you. I got this link from one of my blog readers. I am Toishan and I still speak the dialect with my dad and sister. And I live in Penang, Malaysia. It is unfortunately a dying dialect. The younger ones either refuse to speak this or resort to Mandarin. It's great that you are keeping traditions alive.

Ngoi can also be ngok. Toisanese is very diverse. Even 知道 can become ii tui, dei tui, or di tui, depending on where the speaker is from.

@@jecreangesutka8140 nee ho mah? thanks for responding. aw-deh nee. That's very nice of you to learn Toisan! I have met other people who are not Toisan but learned it as well! so cool! coy hoy! and btw toisan people in America spell it as Toisan or Hoisan, not Taishan. When many of us American born Toisan people see Taishan, we don't recognize that. We recognize Toisan or Hoisan. Anyhow, my fb page is Cantonese Toisan zsk. request me! also if you are in NYC, we will have Toisan lessons in the near future again. email me as well to be on the email list. lessons are free. email: cantonesegettogether@gmail.com hope to hear from you!

Knowing that I can speak to my great-grandmother from the knowledge that this video has taught me really brings me joy and my great-grandma. It's a dying language which is unfortunate, but this video will help me to teach my kids (when I have) !

At 28:34, what is the particle (luh33)? 我唔來luh33。 Potential options: 1) 嘍 lū (final particle equivalent to 了 lēl). 別說嘍 bèik-sōt-lū you don't have to say it. 夠嘍[夠嘍] gëo-lū enough. 2) 咯 lö (final particle.吃飯咯! hiëk-fàn-lö Time to eat! 當然咯! öng-ngẽin-lö Of course!) 3) 了Lēl, lẽl (modal particle intensifying preceding clause); (completed action marker) 4) 咧 Le̖h (Completed action grammatical particle (used in the same way as 了, 啦, and 哩))

Thank you so much for this fantastic video. My siblings and I grew up in Penang, Malaysia speaking the Toisan dialect. We still do today but unfortunately our children and grandchildren don't. I plan to share this video with them. Our grandparents (on the Chan side) came from Hoisan at the turn of the 20th century. Grandpa Chan hailed from Sui Nam, Ai Kong village. Anyone knows where this is? Once again thank you very much.

The dying dialect
@kimberlinachi9809
@kimberlinachi9809 4 жыл бұрын
Gayle Cheung, Why even say dying dialect? We should say something good about the Toisan dialect and Toisan people, REMEMBER, TOISAN PEOPLE HELPED BUILD THE US. TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD. Those are the things we should be pointing out, not the negatives. And if it is being spoken less, news flash, all dialects are slowly being spoken less but why even be so negative and say something so negative? WE SHOULD CONTINUE TO SPEAK TOISAN AND SAY THE WONDERFUL THINGS OF THE DIALECT AND PEOPLE. IT IS UP TO US TOISAN PEOPLE TO HELP PRESERVE THE BEAUTIFUL TOISAN DIALECT.
