Major kudos to the filmmakers for depicting panic attacks very realistically, and in a children's film too. The writers of "Velma", ostensibly an "adult animation", should definitely take notes!

I really needed Final Wish in my life. I have anxiety, panic attacks, and depression and a lot of that came from college. I was self-made through college, I paid for a lot of my tuition out of pocket and often was scared that I was going to fail. Eventually, I found my friends in the multicultural center and my two best friends. I had a severe panic attack after I was struggling with a project. I locked myself in a room and they got in. Instead of chastising or yelling at me, they just sat there with me. Put their hands on my shoulder and just stayed with me. To this day, I love them so much for how much they are there for me.

Something I liked in the movie was when Puss and Wolf are parting ways. Puss says hasta la muerte, as opposed to adios muerte. "Until we meet again Death". Instead of "goodbye Death". Puss has accepted the fact that one day he will permanently die and he won't squander his last life the way he did with his previous lives.

One thing I love about this movie is how Jack is such a perfect foil to literally every other character simply because he has no other motive than personal gain. He's that prime example of material things never being enough for some people and how toxic it is. Also how Death is portrayed as antagonistic but not villainous, he's just doing he job at the end of the day. He only is so hostile in this situation because of how flippantly Puss was treating his lives. More or less if Puss wasn't in a sense made an example of then how many other people would start disrespecting Death after him? If there weren't already given his fame.

I didn't go into the movie with high expectations; I'm not a huge fan of the Shrek franchise. But I was so pleasantly surprised by how maturely they handled the conflicts and the realistic representation of anxiety and mortality. It just hits different when you have so many moving pieces that just play so well with each other. They really got to have their cake and eat it too by adding in a second villain. I liked not having Jack be redeemable but you still had sympathy for Goldy.

A quote from "Dune" I remember in moments of ego: “Greatness is a transitory experience. It is never consistent. It depends in part upon the myth-making imagination of humankind. The person who experiences greatness must have a feeling for the myth he is in. He must reflect what is projected upon him. And he must have a strong sense of the sardonic. This is what uncouples him from belief in his own pretensions. The sardonic is all that permits him to move within himself. Without this quality, even occasional greatness will destroy a man.”

I actually liked that Puss didn't rub Purrito's belly. To me it communicated that not all methods to help with stress or anxiety is not a one size fits all fix. Like how Purrito suggested it because he heard it could help but it wasn't something for Puss so he didn't do it. Although would have been cute it would also have made it feel a bit cliche in my opinion.

I was always a "brave" kid growing up, reckless is probably a better word, but my little brother seemed to get scared really easily. Whenever our parents were late my brother would always think the worst, after a while I would start to panic too, but I knew that if he knew I was worried too we would keep escalating. So I would make sure he couldn't see that I was worried, I would usually put on a movie and sit with him until our parents got home.

I think there's also a key point when Puss finally realizes how wrong he was to himself during the cave where he reflects. He knew he did wrong by not showing to the church, but he didn't get why he couldn't muster up the courage until he (and his brain) processes that yes, he held onto his flaws that held him back from improving.

I wish I could send this to my mum because it explains an anxiety attack and why my service dog helped so much. And why my mum always makes things worse. Unfortunately, she just would take it the wrong way, and it's so frustrating. Even the clip of Perrito putting his head on Puss makes me cry because it's so well done. Oddly, between this and Scream VI, there're two very different films that really show what it's like to have an anxiety attack (for me) (with a mention to Arcane and Jinx).

@@coralmaynard4876 my mum thinks everything is an attack. Like, I would be sending it just as, like, a heads up to say, "this is a good representation of what it feels like, here's what would be helpful for you to do..." And she would hear that but immediately latch on to the parts that call out the things she actually does and that isn't helpful, all the badgering, the "get over it already, it's not so bad" types of comments. So for people with healthy relationships with people, it's great! But it's much the same reason I won't bring my mum to therapy because Im afraid and pretty sure it'll end up being used against me at some point and not be the one place I've created with my therapist to be vulnerable - and I have a huge bias against being vulnerable and I'm still working on it, so I'm not jeopardizing that for anything, even if I could have a better relationship with my mum because I know it would never last.

Interesting. I am writing a book about a superheroine who suffers PTSD after a close friend - more of a little sister - was brutally murdered. My heroine is the person who finds the body. She feels guilty for not being there for her friend and not teaching her self-defense, even though of course that was not her fault. She goes from being a perennially optimistic and cheerful person to withdrawing from the family she loves, not realizing that her withdrawal is also injuring them. Her trauma is increased when she has to testify at the trial of the murderer, and when the killer's family insult her dead friend after the initial court session she overreacts and assaults them. She ends up retreating to a remote nunnery to try and regain her equilibrium, and that takes a couple of years.

What I especially like about the movie is how instead of using an overused message like friendship or love or believing in yourself they took the fear of death and valuing the time you have. It doesn't matter if you are 12, 30 or 50, everyone fears death. It's what keeps us alive.

Yeah, toward the end of my relationship with my ex, she would have "conversations" with me, where I really wasn't allowed to say anything in response, and she would simply pin me down (conversationally) to have a 30-minute or more session of laying into me with every way in which I was failing as a partner. It got to the point where it was causing me to have honest-to-goodness panic attacks, and it really didn't help that she was dismissive of the panic attacks that I was having, and how hard she was driving me into fight-or-flight mental spaces. But, even before that, I've known panic attacks, and I've had times back in college when I was left unable to do anything more than lie down on my bed and just clutch my little stuffed tiger. But yeah. Suffice to say that my ex's approach didn't improve the situation. At all.

I must say, i really enjoyed this movie's depiction of death, and i feel that anyone who refers to him as a villain kind of misses the point. Death is intimidating and an antagonist to be sure, and also seems to really love his job, but at the end of the day he's actually just a force or rule of nature that has just decided to cut to the chase with the thing that's been ignoring him and flouting around with rules for so long, and i love that concept.

Also, something worth mentioning, Puss was an orphan. He lived in an orphanage with a bunch of other kids. So his attention seeking and grandiosity is probably him seeking the validation and attention he didn't have as a child.

I've been waiting for you to do this review since I saw this amazing movie, but I am so confused that you didn't mention what I felt was the most pervasive point... Abandonment. Every main character is an orphan, and while that pain and fear of further abandonment is present with each character each handles it in their own way. Puss tries to be EXTRA, so no one will want to leave him Kitty doesn't let anyone in after she was betrayed and left alone Perrito tries to heal those who are suffering like he is, and in turn, buries his pain Goldilocks is bent on restoring what was lost, while not recognizing what she has Jack uses force and intimidation to hold people hostage, in an almost childlike way As an adopted child, I have spent a lot of time dealing with my abandonment issues upon reaching maturity. And while I have made great progress, this movie brought out each and every fear I have ever had throughout my life. Not to add too much of a spoiler, but the ending when Jack casts aside his staff into the ether to achieve his goals was like my greatest nightmare personified from both sides. Being frivolously cast aside without a moment of contemplation sure, but also allowing the chain of abuse to continue in our life and possibly into the next. . I would LOVE to hear your take on this perspective and am a HUGE FAN of all your videos! Thank you!

This movie was SUCH a breath of fresh air in animation and storytelling, I loved it. I'm really happy to see you made a video on it, that scene with Perrito helping Puss through his panic attack was SO tender and wonderfully done. The tension and panic Puss feels leading up to that moment is depicted so incredibly well and the payoff of Perrito placing his head on Puss's torso to calm him... you felt the theater take a collective deep breath together in that moment. Thanks for covering this movie, it's incredible and deserves all the love it gets. One of my favorite things about this movie is how our leading cat Puss and the coolest villain Death both have obvious Hispanic accents. Here you have a couple of bad asses with an accent, and they are not any less cool for it. I hope more movies continue to cast ESL actors in leading roles, that sort of visibility is so important for ESL kids to embrace their accents rather than feel shame.

When I saw this movie in theaters, I wasn't expecting the filmakers to involve the topic of anxiety. I have anxiety myself and never thought a kids' film would include something like this. The panic attack scene was portrayed very well, what caught my attention was the heartbeat and when Perrito's voice cut in and out when he was talking to Puss. It was heartwarming when Perrito layed his head on Puss, which helped calm Puss down.

Very nice analysis! I loved this movie...it had so much depth. And it was made with so much heart, art, craft and care, in every respect. It's so hard to choose favourite moments because there were so many good ones, but I think at least some my favourite moments were 1) in the doctor's office where Puss is being so blase about having died yet again, 2) where Puss buries and has a funeral for his Puss in Boots persona, 3) where Perro is being so fully and joyfully in the moment and is just sailing through the flowers, 4) the panic attack scene when Perro (thereafter Perrito) comforted Puss...they handled it beautifully...they could have gone goofy or obvious but they chose subtle, 5) where Puss apologises to Kitty, and 6) when all the antagonists co-operated at the end and destroyed the wish to remove the temptation.

I didn't go into this movie with high expectations when I finally watched it last week, as spinoff series rarely hold up to their source material imo. But, I was working on projects and running around like a chicken with my head cut off to get things done and the next day I crashed. I struggle with productivity guilt on top of my own PTSD and all the lovely features that comes with it, so I needed a day to do a quiet project that I didn't have to concentrate too deeply on and allowed me to rest on the couch. I put on this movie on a whim, what I didn't expect was to finish the movie in tears because of the panic attack scene and watch Puss work through his anxiety. It made me feel seen, and I know I can use it as a teaching tool for my husband when he's at a loss. Perrito's reaction was the exact thing I seek when I'm in the throes of a panic attack or my chronic pain flares up and makes me feel inadequate. This movie should be a must watch, it teaches the value of your life, compassion, patience, and the power of a found family.

Old video but I'm watching all your videos that appeal me, and I'm watching all these from this movie. I really loved this movie so much, the message and visuals are precious. I connected a lot with Puss, specially the moment he had anxiety attack, I felt it hard that scene! Cause I have serious unhealthy anxiety issues due to my autism, are high peaks of anxiety when I'm dealing with specific situations (I'm with professionals who helps me to deal with it luckily ^^). So I feel very indentified with that scene, very well done and reflects well the feelings of anxiety and despair when someone suffers one, the strong and rapid heartbeat, the heavy breathing, also the silence, void silence, when you are in that state you listen all that. It was so tender to see Perrito there supporting in silence just staying there to calm down ;w; ♥ I even cried haha :"D So precious and emotional. Everyone deserves someone like Perrito :") Really good video! I like watching videos about this and anxiety X) It feels good when people or a movie address this issue or mental health in general ♥ If you ever do an analysis of Inside Out movie, I would love to watch it, it's so didactic and nice how they teach about feelings X)

The section you were talking about at the end reminds me of the story "And Then We'll Be Okay" on the Exurbla channel. I don't know if it's an original story or not by them, but I always come back to it every once in a long while. I'm pretty sure it's about loss and learning to accept it so you can live a functional and good life, but I could be wrong.

Myself and no one I know has ever had a panic/anxiety attack but I know how good it was of Perito to just be there for Puss. 🐶🐱💗

Had a few major oanick attacks at one of my previous jobs. Some head-ache induced (I suffered from chronic headaches that sometimes pretty much incapacitated me), sometimes form being startled, sometimes just at random, no reason whatsoever, and at least one account of what I believed was medicine induced. They tried treating my headaches with a medication that, unbeknownst to me, had anxiety as a side effect. My supervisor, obviously experienced in dealing with panic and anxiety from his time fighting wildfires, could expertly put me at ease in about 10 minutes or less, whereas normally the panick attack would last 30 minutes, sometimes followed by another panic attack. Going through it alone or without someone who knows how to deescalate is incredibly difficult and traumatizing. Watching this movie is such a flashback for me, floods my mind with memories of my anxiety when it was at its worse, but, also reminds me of Jim. He did more for me than he could ever know.

Communications 101 in college, if it taught me anything, 90% of communication is non-verbal… the panic attack was handled superbly. Therapy also taught me that you can help talk someone through a panic attack by asking them to walk you through one of their routines in which the familiarity can help calm them. In extreme cases, if you find someone that is in such a bad case of a panic attack, ONLY IN THE MOST EXTREME CASES, you can splash water in their face to “snap” them out of it because their mind goes into survival mode which can take their mind off of whatever is causing the panic attack… had to learn it through experience.

I have realized I have anxiety in recent years. My triggers are specific situations wherein I feel trapped or like I’m suffocating from lack of oxygen. So any situation where I feel I’m not getting enough fresh air like in a pharmacy with all the weird smells or in a place with no open windows or doors, even in a social situation where I don’t feel I can leave because it’s inappropriate can trigger a panic attack. How I’ve dealt with the attacks, before I got on medication, was 1. To keep moving. I felt that if I stayed still I would pass out so I kept one leg moving or my fingers tapping, just something to tell me that I’m still awake. 2. Focus on something. My vision becomes very blurry during attacks so I need something to stare at so I know that I can still see and I’m still awake and aware. 3. I’ve worked on my breathing but during an attack I could never feel satisfied with the amount of oxygen I was getting. I’ve learned to stay calm even if I feel like I’m not getting enough air and rationalize that I am in fact getting air even if it doesn’t feel like it. 4. Denial. If I’m in a situation where there are no open windows I trick myself into believing there is one. 5. Listening to calming videos like ASMR really helps But overall medication and always having an “escape route” to open air helps tremendously. Thanks for your input in the video ❤

Realising that what you have right now is Just right is a very mature response to the world. It takes effort to reach this clarity and Puss reaches it in the end.

My mom used to be very dismissive of my anxiety and panic attacks. She'd tell me to learn how to control it because i wouldn't get anywhere in life if i wasn't in control of myself... until she had anxiety herself. She still isn't understanding towards me - i still need to learn how to control myself - but now she knows that it exists at least

Mine would have to be towards the end when puss fights death and admits he can’t beat him but he won’t die without fighting for his life and death clearly could’ve killed him seeing how puss has come to respect life rather than fool with it. The wolf let’s him go kinda shows death as a sort of friend in a sense
