Finding the Best ARPG Ever Made: Warhammer Chaosbane

Warhammer is an iconic franchise that has a multitude of interactive ways to appreciate its world. Between both fantasy and futuristic scenarios, there's no shortage of media to consume that's enjoyable. Therefore, the lack of enjoyment one can derive from Warhammer: Chaosbane is quite surprising! But, I'm never one to not give a game a fair shot, so we're here to determine if through it's mediocrity, is Chaosbane possibly the best ARPG ever made?

Speaking as a Warhammer Enjoyer, I think I know why you didn't enjoy the game. Have you tried inhaling an entire Can of Citadel Spray Paint Primer before launching the game? I feel like that really helps define and highlight the hidden beauty of the Warp and Chaos.

Thank you for speaking out against "tap button to do the ideal movement" gameplay. From blinks to sprints to dashes If I have to tap something until my brain shuts off and it is just always being presses - Why the fuck not make that my default movement with no input then?

I prefer that over "you are slow" shit 99% of games have. Movement is forbidden in too much.

@@coldeed I think a happy medium is just take the speed you would get from doing a spammy movement option and making that the default would do wonders. Then have the "dodge" option feel like a bonus and not a requirement. But then that might be an arms race in and of itself.

@@InvadeNormandy it depends. Spamming one button is bad, but proper movement taking control and being faster than default moving is best. The bigger issue is if you default to spamming the movement thats simple, the game literally has you moving too slow.

Level with me Seer, I have brain damage and when I see Pistol/Sword my pants get tight; is it worth trying for that Witch Hunter? I know little about Warhammer, but I did buy the Warhammer Online Collectors Edition over a decade ago and played it for like 3 hours because of the same reason.

The Warhammer IP's have always had a bit of a problem with lore bloat. You either include all the lore and end up with something that is uncontrollably wordy (which can work, like Owl Cats Rogue Trader RPG) but is a huge commitment, or you assume your entire consumer base knows whats going on a basic level and omit most of the lore and leave any new players lost and confused on the finer details. This can also work if you make a decently fun game (see Space Marine), but if you make something as bland as unflavoured porridge people are gonna have a bad time. I quite liked what I played though I never finished it. Granted I don't finish most games I play, that's a me issue. The build meter and use meter skill is not necessarily how each character plays, they explain it in one of the character tabs what your unique energy building mechanics are. Spacebar or what you deemed the movement skill is also a unique ability depending on character. Like for engineer it vents heat so you don't explode but it's also an attack, and you can use it during other attacks. For the soldier it's a shield bash with a cooldown for a super bash. For the witch hunter it's the weapon swap ability because he's both a melee and ranged dude etc. Of course mobile game comparison is haha funny but really I think it's off-putting to you because it was designed as a controller arpg. As far as those are concerned its pretty good but of course gets stomped by its big bros the PC arpgs. Might actually play it again since it's back in my consciousness. Looking forward to your next vid too Seer.

Love it! (the video, not the game, heh). Hopefully you will make it to the PS2 era games, as I remember them being somewhat fun, and want to relive them vicariously through your experience. The X-Men Legends series was quite fun, I seem to recall, although it strayed a bit from the normal ARPG formula. But considering newer released games have also strayed from what made ARPGs fun, they fit quite well in their own way.

I think this game is pretty good. I only played this game 6 times to try out the different classes on my PS5. It’s rare that the Warhammer franchise has ARPGs where you get to play as a both a class tied to a race. In fact, maybe there should be new ARPGs where you play as an Wood Elven Ranger, High Elven Mage, Dwarven Engineer, Orcish Berserker, Dark Elf Knight, Gnome Thief, Catfolk Priest, Lizardfolk Warlock, Human Bard and Merfolk Gladiator.

I was playing Akinator and trying to get the Genie to guess Seer. It asked me “is your person affiliated with curse words?” and I knew it was right on the money. Tragically, despite being the epitome of curse words, the genie failed to guess Seer 🤔

I'm a long time fan of warhammer and I got to say, chaosbane really is a 5/10 game. It's a video game that video games, without being exceptional at anything it does.

I have never been happier to not be named Benjamin. So, when are you going to get around to Inquisitor: Martyr? That one's... actually, I'm still kind of undecided myself about how it is. Too much damn gear for my liking and the upgrade trees are a hair too incremental, but it has its charms. I need to get back to it some more to see how much deeper it gets when I get further in.

Next time, or in one of these episodes, you can do Divine Divinity, an almost forgotten arpg made by the creators of Baldurs Gate 3 before Baldurs Gate 3. I played it and I must admit I enjoyed it.

I picked this up on sale for a few bucks. Was genuinely excited as I have played a few Warhammer ‘games’ before and this one seemed to function. Ghostlore is an ARPG. one i really enjoy but one probably not many would. however lots of negative reviews obviously barely scratched the surface of the game unforunately, because once you get into it its soo good (at least my opinion. i think you'd rip it apart though)

Look into Slormancer next. Its about to release its 1.0 and come out of Early Access, and it already has A LOT to do. If you like Chronicon, you will like Slormancer.

@@junk3996 Its at 0.9 and about to be at 1.0 soon I believe. Sadly the dude who made Chronicon said he isnt planning on ever making another Chronicon, or at least not for a very long time. Another Game I just discovered is 9th Dawn because the first game is getting a Remake in 2D-3D and it looks great. The guy who makes the series even said he is experimenting with 2D-3D for the 4th Game, so unlike Chronicon, if you end up liking that Series, there are more Games to come.

there are sets in this game. A set for the merc (human) changes a boring skill being a shot into a blunderbuss shot (warhammer type shotgun) wich makes the "build" somewhat fun. But there is not much to redeem here tbf

Yea the endgame isn't bad. For a game on sale for 5$ a lot you could do worse. It's pretty much a diablo 3 clone but I don't hate it as much as diablo 3 because it's not pretending to be a sequel to diablo 2.

this game really does have a strong odour of what was intended to be a mobile game. the UI screams it so loud. Look how the entire UI when ingame is packed into the left corner and is super small. The menus UI and skill select UI are very non-traditional to PC games too.

I beat this one 5 times and wether its on super hard or baby easy, the balance was fucked each time. Only on one of the playthroughs did the bosses not die instantly (literally, excluding phase shifts). I was consistently overpowered so it really got boring fast.
