I've very recently gotten a Wacaco Picopresso, which is the upgrade to the Minipresso that Morgan is using here. It's a MUCH nicer device, and produces quite nice espresso. However, it is $125, so a little outside the range she's using here, but seriously, I highly recommend it.

@@morgandrinkscoffee I've had the minipresso for years, and I really do love it. However I really liked only liked it when I only need to pull 2 shots or so. I got the upgraded canister and used it for my girlfriend and I, and doing it four times is just a pain. Also, as a side note. You are not supposed to tamp the minipresso's grounds as you could cause damage to the device when pulling due to pressure.

HA! Yes... I kind of found mine on Facebook Marketplace. Some woman sold it for $40 so I jumped into my car immediately and got it. Rich neighborhood and she bought a new one. It made a loud screeching sound when it dumped the puck. A 5 minute google - removed 3 screws - put salad oil on a large screw (I did not have any other lubricant in the house) - closed it back up and it was fixed. That was 2 years ago. I still use it at least 4 times a day. still no sound. Never had to put real oil on the screw.

I just bought the Staresso, and there are a few things that need to be said in the manual. 1) You better use the top of the plunging stick to press the coffee. 2) the grinder needs to be a little thicker than the one you use in a conventional espresso machine. 3) You CAN put 50ml of water, but it's better if you use 80ml with these metrics I'm mentioning. 4) (And this goes for all of these machines) You SHOULD pre heat the places where the water goes through, like you pre heat a cup for a regular espresso or americano. I hope this helps get your rates right. 👍🏼👍🏼

I've had a minipresso since they first came out (complete with all of the early-adopter issues). It makes decent espresso but has a huge amount of cleanup work (flushing it with water after, etc) ... far too much effort for a solo shot (never could get a decent doppio out of it). I went back to my trusty aeropress and the minipresso has been collecting dust in a drawer for many years. So on that note ... the one other factor that needs to be considered in this review is cleanup -- that was really the deal-killer for me with the minipresso and made me wish I'd gotten the "pod" version (as much as I hate the environmental impact of pods).

If you get the Wacaco Nanopresso, I suggest also getting the barista kit with it. The larger filter basket and water chamber allows you to make a double espresso, and the included tamper is easier to use that the back of the scoop. The Nanopresso takes a few uses to get the hang of so give it some practice. Don’t pump too fast or the pressure can blow the seal out and you’ll end up with grounds in your water. Slow but steady is the key. As for temperature, you control that with the water you put in. If you want it hotter, put in hotter water. I use this extensively when traveling, and while it takes some time, I’ll opt for this using my home roasted beans any day over most US restaurants and chain coffee shops.

About the minipresso; I've had one for a couple of years. Bought it for a hike. First week out some moisture got into the pump-mechanism and I could not really get it to dry. Contact with support adviced me to leave it to dry on its own fully deassembled. So I did. Moisture stayed trapped for so long that any brews since have the very... interesting tang of mildew. Keep that in mind. Hikes now involved a GSI ultralite pour-over filter instead.

Heyy I have a bit of suggestions if you’re looking for 2nd episode of this. The staresso in the video is their 2nd generation staresso, which is an older one. Staresso 3rd generation can fit more coffee in there, I think water tank is also bigger. Maybe you can try comparing staresso 3rd gen to 1zpresso y3 (if you can find one there’s also non-pressurised kit) and to wacaco picopresso. I think it will put up a good comparison among these 3!

Gotta respect James for that video. He shows some results that might go against his overall point but he doesn't hide the experiment - he was willing to admit that if you're familiar with your scoop and technique you can get consistent scoops, but the problem then is that there is no standard "scoop" so unless you're following manufacturer instructions on something that came with a scoop your amounts might be all off.

Thanks for this video! I've been wanting to start making coffee at home but it's just so costly; the machines ofc are very very pricey but then you add the grinder, and then a milk frother (bc I looooove fancy milk drinks) and then it starts to feel like I'll never get to start making it at home anytime soon. I have been able to find some deals for used machines but even then they're still in the 100s and there's the thought of "is this worth investing in?" when I'm just starting and who knows if I'll be able to stick with it and actually enjoy the process if I've never done it before. Starting out with one of these feels a lot more reasonable, plus there's the advantage of being portable seeing as I might be moving around soon.

I use the Wacaco Nanopresso with the Barista Kit and am very satisfied. I do question the term "portable" with any of these. In fact I never grade the first coffee; only the second coffee in a row. A certain amount of "clean up" is required between coffees and this is frequently (almost always) overlooked in any evaluation. The ads show a coffee maker used on a boat, in the woods, etc. BUT they never show any cleanup. Only the first cup and then they sign off. That said, I'm pleased with the Nanopresso setup although it also has that clean up problem.

Thanks for that recommendation. I have been eyeing the Flair, wasn't sure about which model, but leaning toward either the Signature or the Pro. Good to know that you're a happy customer with the Signature.

@@pimacanyon6208 You’re welcome! If you have any questions about the setup, let me know. I’d really only suggest the Pro if you’re seeking to make a legit double shot. If not, the Signature is a gem. I do believe the pressure gauge is crucial for consistency, I’ve honed in a specific pressure profile that is masterful. As for the Sette, I bought mine refurbed and saved $100.

@@friendslovecars one more question: what's the minimum amount of coffee you can put into the Flair portafilter (is that the right term?) and get a decent single shot, even if it's on the small side? Reason I ask is that I'm a caffeine lightweight, so I know doing a shot with 15g of coffee would be a bit much. Something like 7g or 9g would be more workable for me. (OTOH, my wife could handle--and enjoy--a 15g shot. She uses a moka pot now, but would definitely appreciate real espresso!)
@friendslovecars
@friendslovecars 2 жыл бұрын
@@pimacanyon6208 technically the Signature can handle 18 grams of espresso, but I’ve only really experimented with 15g as that’s my comfort zone. One shot and I’m set for the day. I think you’d be fine with less (like 12g let’s say) as long as you measure your output to be double that (24g/mL)

I use the white battery generated with kcup pods. It doesn't make espresso and need a lot of coffee grounds in order to make coffee. I have it for an year now. Good as a desktop coffee maker

I have an idea that might work. In order to keep the coffee hot while brewing, I think that the water reservoirs would hold heat if they were preheated by filling it with boiling water, drain that water out after about a minute, and refill the reservoir and then continue.

@MrHarlequin2316 2 жыл бұрын
Nice comparison but would make two observations: 1) all of these manual devices need fairly aggressive pre-heating in order to get the best out of them. 2) I couldn’t concentrate on much of the Staresso review as I was fixated on your cat in the microwave. 🐈

I have a portable machine very similar to the minipresso and in the few times that I've used it I've been happy with its approximation of espresso. That being said I don't have a method of producing actual espresso so a passible substitute is the best I can hope for. Also, I got very distracted around 12:00 when I noticed that the background music went to a kind of smooth jazz variation on the happy birthday song.

@@heyjude4485 If you look up "Do THIS to Make ESPRESSO with an AeroPress" You should find the video that I use for my recipe. I tweaked the ratios slightly. I use 18g of coffee and 55g of water but I'm still deciding which ratio I like better. It's not a perfect recipe but it's a good starting point. Hope that helps!

a couple of years ago I bought a cheap clone of the minipresso for camping. I wasn't expecting much but was honestly really pleased. I think the one I got was only about $25 and I didn't expect it to last but it's been going strong ever since. probably made about 200 cups so far.
