Outside of Philly, Philly Cheese steaks usually have onions, peppers, and sometime mushrooms. In Philly, if you watch any of the traditional cheesesteak places, Ginos or Pat’s, for example, they are usually ordered with or without onions and with or without cheese wiz

I am from Philly and this is 100% true. Also the cheese is so yellow because it is mock "cheese wiz", which is also very bright yellow. Like nacho cheese.

Yeah you can always order some sweet peppers, which are pretty tasty, but they're generally not included in a philly cheesesteak.

Oh cheesesteaks traditionally come with cheese whiz which is that bright yellow cheese. And onions and peppers are not traditional.

So happy you're checking out places in Philly! Sadly the BEST vegan cheesesteak place, Wiz Kid, closed during the pandemic :( It was from the chefs at Vedge and they used the rutabaga fondue as "whiz"- wish I could eat that now!!

Tattooed Mom's always give you little toys and candy whether you order in or get takeout! Also, most Philly cheesesteaks are traditionally ordered either with or without onions, no peppers or mushrooms, and you can either get cheese whiz which is more like a cheese sauce, or provolone so some of the vegan cheesesteaks try to replicate the classic whiz which is why it doesn't have a cheese pull. And what Berto was referring to I think is the classic NYC chopped cheese which is a little different than the philly cheesesteak, that usually has lettuce, tomato, and mayo. Triangle Tavern is one of my favorite spots in Philly and vegan and non-vegans love it, would definitely recommend their country sweet seitan wings and their meatballs are great!

Blackbird is the only place I get my cheesesteaks from. I order from them frequently and it's a shame lol. Other places are just not as good to me. I am very curious about Tattooed Mom and Triangle Tavern though.

The yellow-orange cheese sauce is whiz as in "wit whiz" which is one of two options when you order a cheese steak anywhere in Philly. The other option is provolone. But whiz is kind of the default in my experience. You have to ask for peppers in general.

I grew up in Philly down the street from two cheesesteak mainstays - Dalessandro's and Chubby's. The steak was always fried with onions, not pepper. But you could have it added. Two cheeses were provolone (authentic) or cheez wiz (tourist). :) The big deal in town was when Chubby's added a chicken cheesesteak. A third place nearby called Fiesta put tomato sauce on all of their cheesesteaks by default for some reason. It was inferior but different enough. If you had it delivered it would be a soggy mess which was part of the charm of ordering from there. It was much better in the shop. I would agree tattooed mom's has the best vegan cheesesteaks. Blackbird used to be the best but then they changed the recipe. Haven't tried the tavern version yet.

Love you guys but a real Phily cheesesteak has ***No peppers *** it’s only outside of Philadelphia that people seem to want to improve upon a classic. “On the real” peppers add kind of a mushy bitter taste whenever I’ve been forced to consume one. Also it’s also a Phily thing to use cheez whiz. So I think the places with the yellowish cheese are trying to replicate that taste.

blackbird's used to put green peppers!!! i haven't had theirs in a looooong while, but i had triangle tavern's recently and WOW i loved it so much. if you ever go there again i really recommend their buffalo seitan wings if you like buffalo. i also highly recommend the buffalo chicken cheesesteak from The Tasty, a fully vegan south philly diner!!! it's SO good - i still need to try their other cheesesteaks too!

A regular meat Philly cheesesteak has the chopped steak or chicken, fired onions, salt pepper ketchup, and...some also request mayo, green peppers. A really good vegan cheesesteak go to Hibiscus and Nourish.

It might sound stupid, but I'd actually recommend bringing a big pair of scissors with you to cut things when they aren't. Less suspicious and strange than a knife and way easier to cut food eith scissors than a knife🙂

as a philly native-- steaks can come wit whiz and onions or witout, peppers are v optional/not usually on there. also, the toys at t mom's are an all the time thing, if you go in they have the lollipops & witch fingers & tops and stuff on all the tables! also, as far as vegan cheesesteaks go, I really like the one we have at monster vegan (more of a cheesesteak hoagie!) but it fills the pizza-place-sandwich-void for sure **also, algorithm's cheesesteak is lit, cosmi's mto's is too
