Over Thanksgiving I was visiting my parents in Virginia and attempted to play Pictionary, teamed with my mother. On one card the item was "New Hampshire" and I tried drawing a quick map of the New England region and filling it in. Mom didn't get it, and I figured out it was because she thought of NH as a tiny state, and on my scribbled map depicting only New England, where I live, it looked rather large. I should have drawn an outline of the whole US (or the contiguous part). In desperation I started drawing the Old Man of the Mountain (RIP), but she just thought it was Mount Rushmore and guessed South Dakota.

States and capitals was fifth grade for me, although there were only forty-eight back then! One of my hobbies is making jig-saw puzzles out of thin plywood, using an electric-powered scroll saw. I like making puzzle maps of the co-terminous states (sorry, Alaska and Hawaii) and, giving the blank pieces to someone, watch as an attempt is made to put them together. Because of their size, I gang the smaller states together: New Hampshire and Vermont; Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut; New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Delaware, Maryland, and West Virginia. On these I draw a line in ink to show the borders within the piece. The other 38 are individual pieces. I cut them so Lake Michigan is negative space. I don't include a border: When assembled, the shape is the 48 states, about two feet wide. Most people cannot identify the state from its shape alone, except for a few like Florida, Texas (a big piece), and California. It is fun, though, to watch several people work on the puzzle, arguing over what goes where, or trying to match up two of the irregular shapes.

I was once boarding a flight from LAX and was standing behind some expats from the UK. They were talking about how much they liked California but the first couple said that they had relocated to Washington DC. They said they liked living on the east coast better because it was easier, quicker and cheaper to go back to the UK for visits. 2) Chicago, where you currently live, has a rich musical history but I rarely hear you mention it. Delaware, Ohio"... how come people know a city that's named after the First State but not know the state itself. Even the news sometimes forgets about Delaware when reporting things... Fun Fact: Not only is Delaware the first state and the first state with no sales tax, but also the city of "Old New Castle" (it makes sense for historical purposes) was actually supposed to be or at least going to be the Capital of the United States. Based on what I was told in Elementary School on a trip to "ONC", they said that political people and such were in Delaware before they finalized where the Capital of US was going to be and if they stayed in Delaware for another week or so, they were actually going to choose Delaware!

I was born and grew up here and I genuinely love it. Iowa has a variety of topography so sometimes it’s rolling hills and forests and sometimes it’s flat. Lots of small towns scattered around the state and our largest city is dwarfed by more well known cities like Chicago or Atlanta and the whole state only boasts 1% of the US population. But we have a love for food and the arts and literacy. I can’t speak for rural areas because I’ve always lived in the urban areas but we have a lot of pride for our little overlooked state. Everyone is nice (for the most part) and I’ve met people and carried on conversations like I’ve known them for years. I grew up in the backward south in the 1950s and 1960s and nowhere were students required to know all the states and their capitals. In fifth grade we were asked to know the 7 counties around us; I thought the teacher said all but 7 of the 159 counties in Georgia which are small. I actually accomplished that over a weekend for a Monday test; I finished labeling all but 7 of the counties on a blank map before many of the rest of the class managed to label the 7. How I did that as a 10-year-old I don't know, but I was devastated when the teacher thought I cheated because it just wasn't possible. No one gave me credit for that feat, not even my family. To this day, though, I can label every state and many of the capitals, but not many of the Georgia counties.

That's just showing off. I'd love to see a video on how the States got their shapes and borders, such as why the States on the East which came out of the original colonies are far more irregular in shape to most of the other States which seem to have more order to their boundaries. You could also try doing a similar quiz as this States video with UK counties.

Stephen Nulty there are plenty of videos on YT that do a very good job of answering your questions. You’ll learn that the west was settled later than the east. There were large territories instead of small states. I’d love to go through each individual occurrence that literally “shaped” our nation, but others do it much better than I.

You should do a quiz on what year did each state enter the Union.

If you've been to Spokane, you're missing a lot of Washington. Spokane is great, but you really need to visit the west side as well. ;)
