I wonder if American success at this would depend on generation. I'm about your age and we had it positively drilled in our head from maybe age 7 or so that we needed to be able to identify all 50 states & their capitals on a map at any given moment or else we would practically be too stupid to be allowed to exist in this Fine Fine Country of Freedom and Eagles™️. But I dunno if younger generations still get the same urgency thrown at them at a young age. I hope they don't, honestly.

I don't know if I can speak for all Americans, but I internalize "City, State" as a single knowledge unit, so I don't really have "New Orleans" as a separate slot in my brain without ", Louisiana" accompanying it. I went until I was stumped. I listed 42 of the 50 states. I was amused to find that you quickly guessed 6 of the 8 states I forgot. And I didn't play that placing on the map thing but I bet I would score about the same. I really don't know how I would do with that quiz of naming all the states with that website. Yes, it took me a while in my text editor but the alphabetical placements of the names and the gaps between would probably be major clues about the states I forgot and might help me remember faster

One tip for remembering some of the more difficult states is the "Chef carrying a chicken drumstick" trick. Not it's official name probably but, it's exactly what it sounds like. How it works is, if you look straight South starting with Minnesota, you get: Chef's Hat: Minnesota Chef's Head: Iowa Chef's Top: Missouri Chef's Pants/Shorts: Arkansas Chef's Boots: Louisiana (also conveniently the "L" shaped state too) Also, to the right of the waist (a.k.a the border between the Missouri and Arkansas): Tennessee is the frying pan holding a chicken drumstick (Kentucky.). 7 states mastered. If it helps, New York is massive so memorizing its shape can help you out, New Jersey looks like an old fashioned telephone handset with its back to the Atlantic, New Hampshire is tricky but if you remember it's a twin side by side with Vermont and Vermont is the v-shaped one, New Hampshire's the other one.

As a US citizen that payed attention in school I can name about 48/50 in the 5 minutes. That’s really only because I struggled to spell the ones I missed correctly. I placed them all pretty fast without missing. Probably helps that I live in the Midwest so most of the “flyover” states are easy for me.

I'm from the US and have been to over half the states so I got them all right (it's capitals I always forget) If they have one for UK counties I should try that, I think I can get all of England and Wales, but not all of Scotland or N Ireland.

I feel like your results on the map-click test suffered a bit from impatience/urgency of a timed (and recorded) testing situation and that you could have done even better, since it was giving you the state names when you clicked on wrong ones. But I think you did quite well on both for someone who doesn't live here. I'm from the US, and got 48/50 on the 'list' one, and two rushed mistakes on the map one. But if you give me a blank map with no prompting I can fill in all of the states (and Canadian provinces and territories) from memory. Then again, I live here, really like maps, and have actually visited all but one of the states (and two Canadian provinces/territories) via road trips. You did far better than my 27 countries on the Europe map, though I'm proud to say that I remembered the Baltic States, and after it was over most of the ones I'd missed at least sounded familiar, heheh.

Honestly you did very well. With the map pinning, I was 100% in 1 minute, 42 seconds, but I'm from the USA and we learned this stuff in elementary school. Also "The Fifty Nifty United States" song is probably the easiest way to memorize the names of the states. I'd argue that a tough challenge for Americans is naming the capital of each state.

You did excellent! I would like to see how well an American can name the 92 counties (shires) of the United Kingdom. I'm an American that has been to the U.K. many times (before I retired)...I probably wouldn't be able to get more than 4 or 5 shires (names & locations) within the U.K.

As an american(t), I cringed at you nearly missing Virginia after nailing west Virginia, wrongly hitting north Dakota and Kentucky like 5 times, and had a laugh at Pennsylvania vs pillidelphia. Also, no, we dont have to memorize all of them, though you will be expected to know vaguely where on a map they are. Not bad for someone in the UK, though a good hint for the future is any state with confederate symbols in their flag is in the south-east (bottom right) part of the US, because even though the traitors lost the war 150 years ago they won't let it go.

Got 34/50 in the states naming and 61% in 3m24s for the locations. Probably was because of really rushing it on the 2nd one (didn't realize the timer was counting up, not down). Honestly thought I'd do better but I guess not going places for a long time affects your memory of where everything is (even if you don't go there at all, I'm on the opposite side of the world from the US).

I think you did well... especially for not being from here. I teach high school and might have my students do this after their final exam tomorrow for fun. I'll post results tomorrow. :) I got 100 for the naming and did it in 2:33... I'm a fast typer and there's a song that has the states in alphabetical order that I learned when I was 9. I got 100 for the placing the states too... but I'm a geography geek... I probably wouldn't do so hot with state capitals though.
