Man you show all the nasty of owning a boat which is great...
@johnarty24993 жыл бұрын
I am a former oday 28 owner - that limber hole would routinely plug up for me also - needs a regular check I also had problems with a split in the drain hoses from cockpit to the overboard fitting - when boat heals, water will go back up that hose and leak. But does not sound like your problem since any rain will do the same and you say dry at dock??? I had the boat from 85 to 2013 - water lift muffler never leaked on mine - packing gland only redone once - just normal drips - few a minute and you can see those. I did have to replace the drain outlets - the sun will toast them and they can break off. If not those check the bathroom sink drain and shower if shower pump. When healed they go under water also - if leaking the water will get to bilge pump. Good luck!!

I can't get to the transom fittings inside. It looks like the only way would be removing the air conditioning that seems to be blocking the way back there.
@johnarty24993 жыл бұрын
Adventures In Paradise in my case my ac was all under port settee so I could just remove that board in the port hatch and crawl back there if I remember correctly. Well like you said, best is to try and watch underway - good luck in spotting it.

@@johnarty2499 Thanks - yea, the combined AC system that's all under the hatch would have been nice.

Good tip, will add that to my list of items to check as I get familiar with my (first boat) ‘86 28.

The fun time of boat ownership. I learn something each time I watch your videos.

I had the same problem on my 84 O'Day 28 last week. The exhaust hose. That may be where the water is coming in under sail. I watched my transom and under sail, with a Fallowing sea, water could get in through the exhaust outlet.
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
Going sailing tomorrow so I'll check... maybe it's the exhaust port. Since I can't get back there due to the AC being in the way, I'm thinking of just making the hold larger so I can slide the hose our the back, then making a new plate that screws to the boat that's round, but maybe a inch or so larger than the hole I make. I see no other way aside from having the AC removed and it's looking a little to complicated.

@@AdventuresInParadise I will be doing my exhaust hose tomorrow. I'll text pics to your neighbor Allen Jones. I work with him.

I would install all new thru hulls, valves and hoses and engine belts.

Those magnetic drive pumps are not designed to be self-priming (due to their centrifugal impellers) and are supposed to be mounted below the water line. I'm surprised it ever worked. Happily, it is extremely hard to burn them out due to the magnetic drive.

Awesome videos! I have an o'day 28 in Oriental NC. Going on 3 years now. I have also replaced my original tank with a moller tank and had to rebuild the tank platform. Its cool to see someone with the exact boat as me. I have standing water under the motor too. I will have to look for that hole that you pointed out. I'm guessing you have already taken care of them but I snapped off those cockpit drain thru hulls by leaning against them from the inside. I was back there chasing leaks too!
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
I can't figure out how to get back there to change the fittings. My AC system is in the way to climb back there. Removing the AC for the day or cutting a larger exhaust hole to come out and install a larger plate seem to be the only two ways.

I started watching your videos to help me purchase a 28 ‘ sailboat. After each video and trouble shooting I reduced the size by one foot. I am now barely thinking of getting a dinghy! Thx for the great content. In all seriousness I am now looking at Oday 28 since you give us so much info here. Maybe I fly you out to look at some boats here in Milwaukee!

I'll admit... sometimes I dream of having a simple easy sailboat on a trailer... just something to enjoy sailing in the shallows.. there is that thought that something might break at any moment... X100... with these boats. Constant money, work, upkeep. Look at the Catalina 25... that would be the perfect boat if you're not going on long trips.

shouldnt that raw water valve be turned 90 deg from whats shown in the video to be open so as to cool the engine? or can the engine be cooled with it off? I dont have a diesel on my 26 so I dont know that much about it.
@AdventuresInParadise2 жыл бұрын
I don't recall how it was in the video, but it's open when the engine is running and closed when it's not. If it's closed, water won't run though the heat exchanger and the engine would overheat.

First thing I would do is make sure there are two hose clamps (reversed for the tightening screws), then the packing in the stuffing box for the prop shaft. But that would be tied with just caulking the fittings on the outer hull. I haven't watched the whole video though.
@timothyruggles73963 жыл бұрын
Maybe a crack in the hose just enough psi when the eng. Is running . The hose looks like plastic not rubber never trust plastic and dubble clamp ALL hose. intermien are hell you have to see it drip just when it does

As a new owner of a 1986 O’Day 28 I appreciate your videos, learn something every time. My current issue is the starter doesn’t work, I bought the boat for $4k so this was expected. Generally troubleshooting a starter is straightforward it’s just getting access to this one is a challenge. I have already removed the alternator, going to have it tested while it’s out just for GP. Any tips? Thanks

@@AdventuresInParadise Thanks, did that and posted a question on how to remove the starter. Any ideas?
@AdventuresInParadise3 жыл бұрын
@@ChuckKelleher I haven't removed it but it's generally not complex, just take off the alternator and go for it... also I've seen the motor manual online in several places, that could help.
@ChuckKelleher3 жыл бұрын
@@AdventuresInParadise I have the manual, it's not complex just tight access, thanks. The alternator was the first thing I removed, I will probably remove the oil filter, I seem to recall it was right below the alternator and figure it out. One more question, what's the make and model for the air conditioner? Living in Georgia means the summer is HOT!!
