The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been running for almost 15 years! Which means nearly 15 years of post-credits scenes, many of them promising new characters and exciting developments. But which of these scenes added up to the least? That's what I go over here.

Not sure about favorite (though the Captain America one is pretty great), but my least favorite *type* of scene are the ones that are just a scene from an upcoming movie. Not a setup, like an actual scene. (The one with Thor visiting Dr. Strange comes to mind, but I feel like that isn't the only one.) The shawarma scene is definitely up there as a favorite for me, I really do love the little joke-y/goofy ones. I also think keeping post-credits scenes are fine, but they should stop using them to tease upcoming movies so heavily, and stick to a post-credits scene and not, like, multiple mid-credits scenes and a post-credits scene.

He was suppose to appear at the beginning of Doctor Strange 2 where he confronts Wanda only to loose his head which she later shows to Strange when he turns up. Gotta be honest, the post credits scene for Doctor Strange should’ve taken the top spot. Not only because it wastes a character (Baron Mordo) but because, unlike Vulture, they completely skip over the entire plot that the scene set up within the MCU itself! Years waiting for Doctor Strange 2 to feature Mordo coming back to hunt down Strange, Wong, and the other sorcerers. Yet Multiverse of Madness completely blows right by it while still referring to it! When Strange meets Illuminati Mordo he literally says that Mordo, from his universe, has tried to kill him various times! That means that the plot set up by the post credits scene did happen. The big shots at Marvel just decided not to give it to us on screen. 😂 Like that’s a colossal failure no matter how you look at it. And Chiwetel Ejiofor is also a great actor who basically got bypassed so Multiverse of Madness could focus on Wanda instead and give us a pretty meaningless version of the Illuminati.

I think you're underestimating how much this post-credit scene is important for homecoming. The reason we have that scene is to make us realise that even Toombs, with all his flaws, recognises after seeing Spider-Man's strength and integrity that he is worth protecting. He's the kind of hero who will risk his life to save the Vulture and Toombs is an honest man. In saving him, Spider-Man proved to Toombs that he was worth protecting, and I think the scene is really effective in showing that.
@quintusaquila34
@quintusaquila34 Жыл бұрын
Exactly! The scene isn't entirely a pointless set up. While it slightly teases Mac Gargan's possible return as the Scorpion it really serves as a cap to the Vulture's arc at the end of Homecoming. Given the choice for revenge on Peter, he decides to instead protect him from Gargan. Also I feel that No Way Home's ending really kind of makes that scene (outside of the character stuff with Toomes) pointless as Toomes will (at least in the MCU) have forgotten that Peter is Spiderman.

I was just thinking about this earlier. The post-credit stuff really reached its peak in Phase 1. There, they served to help build momentum to The Avengers, which was a kind of superhero movie we hadn't sen yet but comics fans had been wishing for for decades. After that, post-credit scenes feel progressively less important, to where now if they DO have a scene that tries to set-up a new character, it feels hollow and unmotivated. I think Marvel's reached the point where, if they want to use some new character, they just can, and they don't have to rely on trying too hook people with a stinger at the end of a film. I think of how they introduced Kang in Loki. It was a natural part of the show, and compromised an entire episode. They didn't need to end WandaVision with a teaser of Kang to get people to watch Loki for Kang.

Since we got the setup of Peter now being back to a street level hero again, the Scorpion would be a perfect villain for the next film as he works great as a big threat at that level. The original comic and plenty of the animated adaptations do a great job of presenting the Scorpion as initially being this unstoppable, at times almost Terminator-like menace who just keeps chasing Spider-Man without tiring, with it only being because of his gradual mental instability that ultimately allows Spider-Man to defeat him. Even the 1967 cartoon I think captured that idea pretty well with how exhausted Spider-Man gets after their first initial encounter, and I think that would make for an amazing extended sequence where Spider-Man fails in the fight, tries to run, but the Scorpion just keeps coming after him leading to a chase that lasts longer than the initial fight. On top of all that, as you said Michael Mando is overqualified to play the Scorpion, who traditionally is more of a brute type character than anything else. That said, seeing how well the MCU has handled the Spider-Man villains so far, meaning they could probably make the Scorpion a far more compelling villain than he usually is, there's the further potential to see him go on to become the MCU's version of Venom in a follow up film, which to me would really highlight Michael Mando's acting range, whilst also making up for the over five-year wait for his MCU reappearance.

@@loganbigmo i personally feel that mordo's offscreen attacks on strange leave us in an even worse spot. it means that if mordo vs strange actually happens in a future MCU movie, we will have missed a huge (and arguably the most impactful) character moment between them - their first reunion. we just got confirmation that strange was forced to fight against his murderous ex-classmate, and we didnt get to see it. i feel like without us seeing that scene we lose so much context for their attitudes towards each other. the only thing i can think of to fix this would be making a prequel movie about them, but in that case it would have to come out in 2025 or some shit , or at least far enough into the future for the dust around multiverse of madness to settle. even then the prequel would need to have a pretty strange (hehe) ending, considering mordo is still a problem in the present, meaning he couldnt die or change his mind about sorcerers by the end of the movie

@@_holy__ghost I think them deleting the scene of Mordo's death also makes it worse in the bigger picture, because Mordo's goal was to get rid of magic users since they're dangerous. So since they deleted the scene of him confronting Wanda, canonically how come he didn't fight her for the Westview stuff? Or deal with Donny Blaze, who was abusing magic for clout? Or anyone else messing with magic? Because now even if a new threat emerges in a third movie it won't change the fact that we had all these magical abusers in Phase 4 & Mordo, who swore to fix it, did nothing.

I'm sure Scorpion was originally going to be the villain in No Way Home, maybe having JJJ hire him to chase down Peter after the reveal. But after the success of Into the Spiderverse; critically, financially and with general audiences, Marvel/Disney wanted to cash in on their own Spiderverse. And it worked, look how successful it is because of bringing in past characters instead of making new ones.

I think it could have easily fallen into the trap of nothing but shallow quips and nostalgia bait, but it does something actually meaningful with the idea of redeeming past villains and using the alternate peters as role models for MCU peter. My favourite part is probably the ending because it sets up MCU peter to be his own independent spiderman, but they probably could have managed that with a Scorpion plot too. One of the biggest issues with Phase 4 post credits scenes is that the set ups and mid/post credits are now supposed to be mysterious instead of a preview of what’s to come. Look at the infinity saga post credits: Nick Fury’s Avengers initiative reveal to Tony, Tony talking to Thaddeus Ross at the bar, Thor’s hammer, Thanos reveal, the Maximoffs reveal, Fine I’ll do it myself, Wasp suit reveal, Civil War cutscene in Antman, Captain Marvel distress signal, etc, all were teases for the future and not mysteries we the audience have to piece together like Shang Chi’s “the beacon”. Also they’ve gotten much weaker when it comes to building hype because they now use emotionally neutral cliffhangers instead of building hype that is positive or negative. Positive hype can lead to feelings of hope and anticipation (eg. The Avengers Initiative) whereas negative hype can lead to feelings of dread and impending doom (eg. Fine I’ll do it myself). But phase 4 post credit scenes are neutral, like you can’t tell whether the beacon in Shang Chi’s post credit scene will be a good or bad thing, and same with Doctor Strange’s new third eye since he seemed troubled by it but then was immediately fine with it. Same with the Eternals post credit.

He is main member of the Midnight Suns and we've only gotten two things past the scene with setting up the idea in the first place, Moon Knight and Werewolf by Night. If Dane doesn't show up in Blade or whatever follows that up, we can safely say that Black Knight was put on the cutting room floor. But as Marvel showed us with Shang-Chi characters that go missing for years can just showup all of a sudden.

Not sure if entirely pointless, but still a few that should be given special mention: -Avengers 2: Thanos takes the infinity gauntlet from his... vault (?) and says "fine, I'll do it myself" as in he was tired of waiting for the infinity stones so he goes for them, but then it takes 3 more years until he attacks Xandar and begins to collect the stones. That's almost the time from his first appearance until Avengers 2. So then when did Thanos attack Nidavellir to force Eitri to make him the gauntlet? No way he attacked it while Odin was still alive, does that mean that the post-credits scene from Age of Ultron was actually a flash forward and it actually took place right after Odin died and during Hela's takeover of Asgard? How did that even go? Did Thanos just sense that Odin died and quickly rushed to Eitri's forge, forced him to make the gauntlet, took the gauntlet, put it in his safe, waited on his chair for some reason for a few days or weeks, then went to retrieve the gauntlet and immediately attacked Xandar, before heading towards Asgard? -The Winter Soldier: Baron Strucker gets set up to be this important player in the HYDRA story arc, like some Machiavellian mastermind about to start a new age, by creating Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch, only to be turned into an imbecile coward in the Avengers 2 intro, who refuses to use the twins to fight the Avengers because "they're not ready", even though they're far more ready that all the nameless HYDRA mooks the Avengers swat like flies in Sokovia and then finally Strucker gets killed off screen like a chump,.

I really expect Gargan to turn into MCU Venom, given that he's the second most famous owner of the name and that Hardy's Eddie Brock has no reason to truly hate Spider-Man. I haven’t looked into it so maybe it’s already a scrapped idea but it would of been perfect for Scorpion to go after Peter and his friends and family in the beginning of No Way Home. In Doctor Strange (2017), the post credit scene was Baron Mordo taking away Johnathan Pangborn’s ability to walk and says “Because I see at long last what’s wrong with the world. Too many sorcerers.” The impression was that he would be the main antagonist for the sequel. But because the plot for the sequel involved the multi-verse, and Doctor Strange encountering alternate universe versions of previously established characters. There wasn’t really any room in the overall plot of Multiverse of Madness to follow up on Mordo’s intentions on murdering all sorcerers. I’m hoping there’s still a sequel in the works that will follow up on that setup. Because I would hate it if it’s just completely abandoned.

I think by the end of Phase 3, MCU has lost the art of mid and post credit scenes. They've mostly become a parody at this point. The 'Eternals' one with Harry Styles is the worst one, but what peeved me most was the 'Infinity War' post credit scene. I think Fury dusted along with the population, nearly uttering Samuel L. Jackson's favorite word, is welcomed bit of humor. But rather than emphasize Thanos's damage, it's used to promote 'Captain Marvel', who at best *is* pointless. It detracts from the tone that was set for the ending of the movie.

With the symbiote tease at the end of No Way Home I’d love to see Scorpion being the main villain created by Val instead of Jameson and a reject Thunderbolts member. Spidey would fight him before getting the symbiote and gets beaten. After dawning the suit he defeats Scorpion but almost kills him in the process and he’s brought back to the moment he almost killed Norman and spares Gargen

You guys remember how TWO post-credits scene teased the importance of Captain's Marvel entry into the MCU at the end of the infinity saga but then had her have so little relevance in Endgame?

You mean like the "Patience" scene involving Captain America? It was a funny joke but still pretty pointless.

one of the post credits that promised a setup & just never happened was Dr Strange post credit where Mordo was stealing magic from other wizards & then they just wrote him off in the next strange film, like I wanted to see that mordo vs strange fight bc in the comics Mordo was like Dr Stranges red skull, his lex luthor if you will, I really hope they deliver with mordo in the future & the actor who played him really brings mordo to life

It HAS to be the second end credits at the end of Multiverse of Madness. Waited 10 minutes just to see the guy stop punching himself...

I would argue the Far From Home post-credits scene was also pretty pointless, considering that the next movie decided to rush over any potential consequences of Peter having his identity revealed by resolving it in like, 10 minutes at the beginning of the film.

Homecoming Cap by a mile. The drumming ant had more purpose than that bad joke that mocked the fans and the very habit of waiting to watch those scenes.

Completely agree. And I remember this post credit scene the first time I saw it in theaters. He gave me chills. That’s never happened. Aside from thanos and killmonger. Maybe vulture when they came to that scene in the car when he was threatening Peter. But the way he explains how he wanted to kill. Spider-Man was a real psychopath. Talking about slitting his throat and putting his head in the washing machine or something? I gotta go back to it. It felt extreme. In the best way possible. Even vulture, who had me for a moment in the car scene was shook. 😂. I really hope this is not an abomination situation again where they wait way too long. If they do this correctly, they can make him the only villain of Spider-Man 4 and make it street level and I think it would work. But! It’s only takes him like the vulture we’re screwed.

The answer is Morbius. Yes. But within MCU? - Fury and Hill being Skrulls actively hurts story - Strange/Cleo is the most cliche cliche to ever cliche. A parody of Marvel post credits. Similar vibes for Hercules. - Too many sorcerers. Rip Mordo, lost to MCU narrative saturation.

The one at the end-end of Homecoming was a cute joke but then they kept doing basically that unironically and I gave up staying. Luckily it seems they've moved the "important" ones to after the main credits.

@Herb Coswell Fully agree. We literally had 2 credit scenes in MOM. One to setup a future Strange story and another as a nod to Raimi fans. People just be complaining about anything nowadays since MOM wasn't a cameo-fest with 100 characters

Are you talking about the first or second one? Because the first one is too early to decide on wether its going to factor into future movies or not, and the second one is just a funny Bruce Campbell cameo that’s not meant to set anything up
@ThePrinceofHisOwnKingdom

I consider the Bruce Campbell one the best post credit scene of Phase 4. Everything else is such a cheap set up for future movies that no longer interesting, so a little joke is refreshing.

The first one absolutely will be followed up on, it would be funny if we just see Strange again and he's back on earth and makes no mention of Clea but that's not going to happen. And the second was a nice Raimi joke
