Spider-Man: No Way Home is the latest MCU film and perhaps the best of from Marvel in 2021. In this video I go over how the movie uses Doc Ock and the Green Goblin well, and how it gets to the heart of Peter Parker, thanks in part to Aunt May.

To me, the most incredible part of “No Way Home” is that they broke the “too many villains” curse of “Spider-Man 3” and “Amazing Spider-Man 2” by having MORE villains AND more Spider-Men!

@hyronvalkinson1749 2 жыл бұрын
It's because they had the same exact origin, unlike most overpacked movies that try to create personal origins for each villain. Their characters and motivations were expressed in their cross-communication rather than in individual scenes. It also helps that nobody required an introduction other than capturing them.
@liv97497
@liv97497 2 жыл бұрын
True, but I think it only works because they're established characters, and we know their dynamics, their motivations, etc. But I think this movie also inadvertently (or maybe even intentionally) ties up a lot of loose ends from those last movies, or at least, give us a new understanding of them. I think we're more used to seeing multiple villains over one story arc now, because we got so many movies with the same characters back to back. I think it's undeniable that the dynamics of superhero movies are different today than they were then, so I think having that many antagonists feels more natural. But I also thing a key feature is that the villains aren't the *actual* antagonists here; it's a lot more about Peter's choices and the consequences for his actions. All in all, a great way to feature multiple villains.

I think Aunt May’s reaction to dying works. She’s literally in shock, she doesn’t realize she’s in pain, and she still has enough strength and blood in her body to function. It makes sense for her to behave in this way, especially given the way she always brushes things off so other people are put first. It was very good imo.

I think their depiction of Peter in this trilogy was deliberately set-up as a representation of childhood and school life. Peter has a lot of safety nets, resources and support. The adventures themselves are far more light and fun than most of the MCU. Now, all those things are gone, Peter has 'left home', no family around, his friends have moved away and he now has to get by entirely on his own. Even if it wasn't entirely truw, I think a lot of us look back on our school years as being far more, fun, carefree and comfortable compared with what follows.

Only the uneducated people thought this movie was good when clearly it was not if you were paying attention to it lmao🤣. Kevin Feige manipulated a lot of idiots to go see this garbage in theatre’s and robbed them taking their money lol. Glad I watched this a home for free🤣. This movie is a👎👎👎. Mess up number 1, Mess up number 1, it’s 100 percent fan service instead of a enjoyable movie which kills a lot of things. Mess up number 2, Only in Kevin Feige’s dumb little mind that Spider-Man can beat Dr.Strange in his own dimension when we all really know that dr.strange can easily hold Spider-Man in place and take the box from him without even trying. Mess up number 2, This movie is really all about Spider-Man getting into MIT which is definitely a dumb way building this movie around. Why didn’t he just go to another college? Not difficult to do lol. Mess up number 3, they focused way to much on the fan service side more than making an enjoyable movie. Mess up number 4, the pacing in this movie is atrocious. It drags on during multiple parts of the movie for way to long and the action in this movie was so bland. 🙄🤣

One moment that I love that gets overshadowed a little bit is when Sandman shows up for the first time. A huge concern of mine going in is that Otto and Flint were not villains at the end of their movies. I didn't know why they were being shown as antagonists again. But I like that they make it crystal clear EXACTLY when Otto got taken out of his universe. Sandman's FIRST action is to back up Spider Man though! It's fantastic! He shows up, blocks the lightning bolt and is just like "Peter! What's going on?" It's only when he realizes that Tom isn't the Tobey Peter that he starts to distrust him. Dr Strange immediately locking him up doesn't help either.

In regards to Aunt May and how she died. I once saw a woman get hit by a car. The car slammed on the brakes but she went almost completely under as it came to a halt. With an annoyed expression, she pulled herself out from under the front bumper dusted herself off, and took about 10 steps before collapsing to the ground. I've never forgotten this and attributed it to adrenaline spiking through her body and overriding any broken bones and internal hemorrhaging she might have sustained, for a few moments anyway.

Norman's condition in the film makes sense to me as an endpoint. He was relatively stable at first, cooperating with the "Goblin", but after all the mayhem of the Raimi film he's grown fatigued. And now suddenly he's trapped in a foreign universe where everything he was fighting to preserve is simply gone. His company, his family, all his motives for his crimes no longer exist, leaving him only with a malevolent drive urging him towards aimless chaos. Not to mention, he's just come off the tail end of a rampage. He actually tried to kill Peter Parker, a young man he was fond of. He knows this has gone way, way too far. He's very much like Dr. Jekyll losing control of Hyde, panicking and turning against this illness that's metastasized inside his mind. And as the Goblin grows stronger Norman gets weaker, more remorseful, and more traumatized, especially when he realizes that his whole life is basically non-existent. What is there for Norman Osborn in this world? Nothing. He's totally alone, almost literally a dead man walking. He's reduced to this helpless, homeless victim, desperate for help, all his battles lost. But the Goblin just wants to have fun.

I would also add that Norman and the Goblin sort of coexisted in the Raimi universe, like they were both focused on taking back what’s “theirs.” Now that those objects of vengeance are taken from them, the two are more at odds. Like you said, the Goblin sees a new universe filled with new ways to torment and destroy at his leisure with little if any real consequences to him or Oscorp, considering it doesn’t even exist in the MCU. Norman doesn’t have his excuses to let the Goblin run rampant anymore, and is justifiably scared. He just wants to go home.

I think that it’s even possible to excuse the Norman side being entirely nice in NWH as Norman realizing realizing how much he was used by the goblin and how much the things the goblin manipulated him with (Harry’s relationship, his job, power, etc) were things that he either had the power to fix correctly or never really should have given the power they had. He’s become completely split into the wholly evil and destructive goblin and the weaker, repentant Norman

5:50 ok, the "I'm something of a scientist myself" was definitely a groan-inducing decision on the writers' part, but I just cannot fault it because Dafoe delivers it with so much shit-eating self-awareness. He sells it so perfectly in a way that both fits the scene and winks at the audience and it's one of the best line reads in the movie (not quite as good as Garfield's exasperated "Peter Three!" of course)

I think Norman was kept fairly true to the character he was in the OG spidey. I believe you see Normans “split personality” if you will, more cut and concise because Norman is so confused and lost he’s now in a complete different universe, so he’s not his usual cocky, rude, condescending Norman like he usually is. I think he was depicted nicely.

First off, movie was great, a great ending to his trilogy, and compliments each prior film, even the films that aren't his. Secondly, I get your take on Norman, but I always saw that the Goblin side has effected him so badly, he's becomes submissive, while Goblin is the dominant personality. Norman wasn't a great person, but in way, the Goblin side toned him down, because the negatives went somewhere else.

Wrong. Just like Doc Ock "hearing the tentacles" these are just manifestations of a part of these characters psyches. It's still them doing what they WANT to do. It's just their way of coping with their evil. That's why it was dumb how Holland "fixed" Doc Ock. He wasn't evil because the chip on his neck broke although that played a factor. He was evil because of his guilt and shame for the death of his wife and failure of his project as well as his ego.

I always took the fact that Harry didn't go full crazy in Spider-Man 3 to be evidence that it was Norman being the person he was before the goblin formula that at least partially influenced him becoming an irredeemable force of evil. In the scene prior to the failed experiment, when he is talking to Peter, through the dialogue you can hear instances of where Octavius was a prideful man. This doesn't make him not normal. I left unconvinced that the cure would stick for some of them. For Doc Ock, Flint and Electro, yes. If Dr. Connors isn’t restrained, he’ll probably just make more lizard serum and dose himself up again. Norman - he’s another story. I doubt the cure serum does anything more than icing Goblin’s mania and maybe stopping Norman’s blackouts, because Norman and Goblin are one in the same. Perhaps his first goal when returning home is to figure out how to get back to the MCU - to continue trying to corrupt a Spider-man with no personal ties to him. Maybe it’s damaging Doc Ock’s chip to turn him evil again, en route to constructing his Sinister Six in the Raimi-verse. Or creating an Electro to cause a lot of damage just to play the hero by cleaning up - for a price, of course. Point is, Goblin isn’t really gone.

Aunt May's death is actually one of those things where movies have conditioned us so hard to expect the unrealistic that realism feels unnatural. For example, when Leon Trotsky was assassinated, he was impaled by an icepick in the back of his head. He then stood up, wrenched the ice pick out, and proceeded to interrogate the man who had swung it through his skull after his guards had finished beating them up. Then he collapsed and was rushed to the hospital and only died hours later. Humans are very resilient, much more so than is often depicted in movies with all the one-shot insta deaths and things like that, which are usually there for proper pacing and dramatic tension rather than authenticity. But I feel like the Aunt May scene worked from both perspectives.

Holland and Garfield got a lot of praise for this movie, but I’m annoyed so much of it is built around “wow I didn’t know they were so good!”. Anyone that knows anything about Holland and Garfield knows they’re both incredible actors who are more than capable of being incredible Peter/Spideys, it’s just that some of their plot held them back. Garfield’s movies came out in an era where we were still blaming actors for shitty scripts, and Holland was acting his ass off in his movies but never got credit because he was of the iron boy jr criticisms. I'm gonna say this first Spider-Man No Way Home is good, very good, but remember that Sony and Marvel Studios almost break apart and at that specific time Marvel Studios redesign their whole Spider-Man, so this movie is more like "fixing" and changing the actual direction of the character, the past strategy of Marvel was to present us the Spider-Man from the 2 movies, but with the Fox agreement, they took a different route for the character. For everyone that liked Spider-Man No Way Home here is other info: •The movie we saw is the third version of the movie •The movie is censored, when Green Goblin kills Aunt May there is a scene where you can see clearly the Goblin's Glyder knifes stabbing Aunt May's stomach and a shot where the wholes are visible, but for some reason we got a scene that looks like a hit, when Tom's Spider-Man fight with Green Goblins there is a lot of blood in the fist and Goblin's face is in very bad form after those hits; also when Green Goblin stabbed Tobey's Spider-Man there are a very graphic shot to the stabbing place. •There are missing scenes for Mary Jane Watson and Peter's daughter welcoming him after returning to his universe. • There is information that Karen from Daredevil appears on the film too, but the scene got deleted because the character is going to appear at She-Hulk

The reason for her hair being dyed could be the spell beginning to fade out, she has subconscious thoughts of Peter and his bright RED spider man suit so she subconsciously goes for a spidey themed look - it could be a nice clue for the audience that she will remember him later in the trilogy

Yeah that's something I've thought about too. Since MCU likes to keep developing their characters. She can eventually evolve into the comic accurate MJ. As she matures her dress style changes to something more stylish and feminine similar to how Zendaya dresses in real life. Maybe at some point she even adopts the name Mary Jane as a stage name or something. They've already given her the Watson.

Yehhhh! I love the stage name idea. I think the home trilogy spent time building on her character in that she slowly opened up and by no way home had a lot of heart. I think keeping that ball rolling would be great for her, and even more heartbreaking for Peter as he has to watch MJ appear happier than ever.

The way they handled the home trilogy as something of an origin story for a more familiar version of Spider-Man was really smart. We get all of the "I wonder how Spider-Man would fit into the Avengers", "What would a Stark Spider-Man suit look like?" out the way right off the bat, instead of once again giving us a Maguire / Garfield esque Spider-Man. Now we've had those questions answered and seen that dynamic, we can go back to the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man without those questions dominating the conversation around the character.

I feel like this kind of changes how Spider-Man works though. Fundamentally, Spider-Man's motivation is a sense of obligation that stems from guilt. What Peter says in Civil War, "When you can do the things that I can, but you don’t, and then the bad things happen, they happen because of you," really exemplifies this. Uncle Ben died because Peter didn't stop the bad guy. That's why his stories are always so self-flagellating and positions the things he wants against doing the right thing. That's not necessarily par for the course for a superhero story, but it's practically a requirement for a Spider-Man story. Except this Peter never had an Uncle Ben moment until right now. Tom Holland's Spider-Man has always just been a hero apparently. May's death serves a completely different purpose for him than Uncle Ben. It's not punishment for his inaction, but rather a challenge to the actions he's already doing. This is the cost of being good, and this Peter's challenge is to still remain good, no matter the consequences. While it still feels very on brand for Spider-Man, it's definitely different.

The last 30 minutes of this movie contained some of the greatest writing I have ever seen come from the MCU and it gives Spiderman fans from all iterations exactly what they wanted for Tom Holland's Spiderman: Real and devastating consequences for his own actions. He didn't have the Avengers or Tony Stark to come in to help save his ass. He lost everything he ever had, knew, and loved because he was so hell bent on trying to fix a problem that would've probably blown over if he had been more patient. He turned a small problem into and even bigger problem and in his chase to try and fix it all he was forced to go with the one option he never wanted. And even after everything is said and done, he couldn't bring himself to try and rectify it by starting over. He chose to keep going all alone. It was a bittersweet ending and I left the theater feeling melancholic. I would give this film a 10/10.

I see what you’re talking about with Defoe. And while I’m not saying that they didn’t have this in the 2002 movie, I’d say it was definitely more of a focus in NWH. Either that or they just expanded on that last moment between McGuire’s Spidey and Defoe whereas both versions of Osborn were working towards the same goal but just had different approaches. I’ll say that when I watched the movie, I did get that same vibe. The only reason I just felt bad for Norman was when Norman had that moment between him and his mask. But after that, I immediately thought “Nope. The Goblin is just playing Spider-Man. There’s no conflict. He’s just the Green Goblin”. But like Peter, I wanted it to be true that the innocent Norman was in there. Overall, I think NWH did the character justice and even made him scarier if you don’t mind me saying.

They portrayed the Goblin _perfectly._ But when I watched NWH twice last Thursday and watched the 2002 movie between showings, the change in Norman's character was really distracting. It's heavily implied that he resists the Goblin because he's a coward, not because he thinks the Goblin is wrong. By the end, he's asking the Goblin for guidance! That's very different than his portrayal in NWH

With a new trilogy of movies for Holland’s incarnation, the reset button type open ending has a lot of scope for more classic flavour Spidey stories. The way the MCU has handled some of the riskier or less fan favourite storylines like Civil War shows they can make that kind of thing work better than it did on the comicbook page. I genuinely believe the Clone Saga could work, and would give Tom Holland some interesting material to work with. The memory wipe also strips away the more Ultimate Spider-Man like influences, since MCU Peter has now passed the point his Ultimate counterpart did.

I completely understand the thematic purpose of having Ned and Mj forget peter, the sacrifice, but I love that trio too much too just retire them when we were just starting to see what Zendaya was capable of. I feel like Peter's loved ones sticking around despite their torment is kind of just as important as the fact that they do get hurt. Aunt May kinda echoed this and I feel like having loved ones is kind of an anchor Peter needs to keep going. An interesting idea i had is that maybe Ned promising not to become a supervillain was foreshadowing more than a joke. Maybe he becomes a magic based Hobgoblin and Peter becomes torn on whether he should tell him the truth or not

No you can't take away the "bells and whistles" from this film, they're a product of the movie and a part of it, it's one of the most pointless things to make note of when criticizing a movie and adds nothing to the conversation.
