I was terrified on working on my honda CR-V giving Honda money everything i had a issue but one day when i had my family with me i broke down and remember i did brought a tool kit just incase my family was going crazy had a cut transmission cooler hose busted. I remember my farther put one on and stayed calm and went work i had to walk a mile to get the part but successful i install new correctly. I know your not ready to try working on Hondas but i wasn't neither till i apply my self. Just start watching videos and try changing the oil sometimes. Ever since i did this back in 06 i never had to go back to honda anymore. You just need the right tools good videos to guild you and the will power.

The main leaks I have found are the camshaft cover plates. Their are two of them, one on the end of the front head and the other is on the rear head, the rear head is the one that started first. When I noticed the oil on the ground my first thought was rear main seal, oil pan, or the oil drain plug. After cleaning the engine really well I found the leak. It was the rear camshaft cover plate o-ring type seal. Really a pain to get to so I put it off for a month or so just constantly wiped the oil off the engine. My alternator just recently went out and found out it was due to the front valve cover gasket leaking onto it. I am in the process of replacing the front valve cover gasket, while I have the intake and other components off the engine I am going to attempt to replace that rear camshaft o-ring and hope it all works out. Eight years ago I did replace both valve cover gaskets along with timing belt and all of the things that pertain to it, water pump etc. While I had the valve covers off the engine I found a video on youtube showing how to adjust the valves. I studied and got some courage and actually did it and did it correctly. The valve adjustment actually cleared up my check engine light and the Pilot ran smoothly for the past eight years until the past month. My Pilot is a 2006 front wheel drive only and has roughly 280,000 miles on it. I am extremely pleased with this vehicle and as long as their isn't any extreme major problems with it I will keep working on it. It has been an awesome vehicle, honestly I think it has been my best vehicle. Those older Hondas are mechanically friendly, to a degree, and you don't have to own a mechanics grade scan tool to work on it or have it reset by one when you complete a repair. Hope this comment encourages others that own a Pilot to consider doing their own repairs and save some dollars and best of all learn some good to know stuff about their vehicle. I know you weren’t under much but just having that OEM jack holding that heavy suv up freaked me out! My guess is that the VVT solenoid gasket is also leaking. PLEASE buy some jack stands!

I love my pilot. 180,000 miles and plan to try for 300,000. Like you, I came into maintenance out of necessity. Couldn't afford to pay for things to be done...but i've enjoyed the process. My wife drives ours most of the time, and the power steering went out. I'm glad it did, because it required me to look around under the hood. Noticed a very similar looking leak. I'll likely start where you did...a deep cleaning of the engine bay, then try to find it's origin. The challenge is that it's already down to 25 degrees here in Iowa. Keep posting.

I got about 245k on mine and am now starting to see leaks and parts failing. I have no problem diving it and having it take awhile as it’s a second car to me. Would be nice to have all it fixed “now” to keep mileage off my truck.. Meh.. it’s only vehicles and I always have a ride handy 😜. Done rambling now…. Fix everything, maintain everything all at the appropriate times and even Gen 1 pilots can easily be a 350k or more vehicles.

Great video man, most of Honda’s J-series V6 engines have leaking points. But for some reason the oil-dipstick always have a perfect reading lol. @11:11 I see that you’re replacing the grommets for the valve cover. The vice (careful of that hairline crack) you’re using isn’t necessary Just use a dab of grease & they slide perfectly on.

@@FilmFactry yes it fixed the problem at that time. Had to go back in about 6 months later, to apply some RTV gasket sealer one the head gasket and it hasn’t leaked sense.

@@Gofucurself123 yes it was, I also put some RTV gaskets sealant around the outside edge. It stopped the leak and didn’t have a problem up to the day I traded it in.

Dude I'm totally scared about this project my Honda is leaking as well not as bad as yours but I think it's destroying all of my alternators I just replaced an alternator well I didn't I paid a mechanic a lot of money to do just the alternator and the belt. I have a family of four now three girls and finally got a little boy on the way just coming off an injury to my back. No complaints here just stating obvious. I just need to know the tools needed and what the hell to do because I went to the dealer they charged me over $5,000 if you add sales tax to that we're right at 6000 hell I paid right at 8500 for the vehicle why the hell is the work to get things fixed on it is as close to the vehicle purchase price that don't make sense. They charged me $500 for the three or four screws you took out on the oil filter gasket replacement when I looked it up on KZbin I was like what the hell. To be honest they gave me a laundry list of things that they said was leaking O2 sensors Etc. I replaced the alternator and the battery I think a month ago that was like $400 for everything. Now I think I got to replace another alternator because my battery light popped on I went to AutoZone they said something inside of the alternator I might got a warranty on it because I bought it from RockAuto. Just frustrating man going through a lot of life and my car is the single most important thing to me other than my family but that's the way I can at least try to get money take my family around emergencies all the Above. I love Honda but is this a blessing or curse?

I had to do the Alternator , new belt, Starter, the spark plugs and coils. Went through 3 batteries in a year so I decided I had to do something instead of being stranded somewhere. This project was mostly time consuming, tool wise most everything was done with a metric socket set, Needle nose pliers, and a weekend so I didn’t need to rush it. The oring sets in total cost about $100 and then time watching lots of videos before I tackled the project.

Just get some tools & dedicate some time to perform the work. It isn’t hard just time consuming. “Stealerships” will charge an arm & leg to do simple things you can do yourself.

I have a leak on our 13 pilot touring. 159k miles. I cant tell where its coming from. Did you have oil on the bottom side of compressor and oil on the passenger side of oil pan? Thats where i have oil. Thanks. How long did this job take? Did you buy intake gasket too?

Took about 6hr if you condense just working on the car. There was breaks that made this a 2 day project. Yes I bought new gaskets.
