In this video, I give some tips on finding a power steering fluid leak on a Honda. As they age, many Hondas will develop a leak somewhere in the Power Steering system. These are some of the things I look for.
This video covers older conventional power steering systems with power steering fluid and an engine driven pump. Newer systems use Electrical Power Steering (EPS), which uses an electric motor to assist with steering force instead of fluid and a pump. I do not talk about EPS in this video.

Quick question I just had power steering wheel pump replaced and is still leaking the pump is brand new

Been driving my Honda without power steering fluid for over 3 years. Got tired of putting fluid every month. To this day I just man handle the steering wheel like my grandfather did back in the 1920’s. If some one tries to steal my ride, which I doubt would happen, it’s manual, with no 2nd gear and no power steering.

Hopefully some people see this and are enlightened. For years now, the dealerships have become parts re-placers and not parts repairers. The total solution is always we need to replace this, Repair, never enters the conversation.

just so you know, most leaks (in engine/ transmission/powersteering) happen due to a rubber gasket hardening. while yes, as with all parts in mostly everything, you will have to replace the part @some point. but that could be 1yr, 2yrs, 5yrs 10yrs down the road. who knows if you'll even still have the car by then? so IT IS (imo) worth it to, at the very least, pick up a $20 bottle of sealant to see if it solves your issue. ESPECIALLY if it is a minor leak. you might've been out of fluid, but the PS reservoir is not big to begin with and who knows how long it's been leaking. point is, it could be a minor leak and a $20 fix. there are crappy sealants out there, but AT-205 RE-SEALANT is a great product for any of the 3 i listed above. good luck

@@mikeTHEmanateeI drive old cars and loathe that people actually do what you have described. I wish they would ban that stuff entirely. It's definitely not illegal and its your car but it's a mechanics nightmare explaining that the previous owner filled the system with an unknown substance.

I happen to be going to see my mechanic tomorrow morning exactly for this specific problem (as well as a few others), so this is an "absolute must watch" video for me. The problem I have is exactly as you have described, the kind of winding noise that increases when the steering turns. I had already changed the high pressure hoses on top, but the power steering fluid is still going down. Your video will certainly help as I will be discussing it with my mechanic tomorrow. Thank you and keep up the good work .... for those of us who are concerned but lack the technical knowledge and skills. Cheers bro.

Excellent video with amazing detail which I learnt a lot from. I'm glad you mentioned that you only use Honda power steering fluid and also only Honda parts. My 2000 Acura TL 3.2 power steering fluid is leaking. A friend said go to a local mechanic, and some people on the internet said to use stop leak and that non Honda power steering fluid is safe. After your great video and other sites that also suggested only use Acura power steering fluid, I have decided to have my nearby Acura dealer fix it. After your video and a few other videos I know that it isn't the O-ring and not the rubber steering boot below and no strange sounds when turning the steering, and no over flowing fluid bubbling out of the reservoir, which never went dry thankfully, I figure that it's likely just the power steering hoses need replacing, which is expensive however a lot less expensive that changing the power steering pump. I'm thankful I didn't try stop leak or other makes fluid as it can wreak the whole system.

No need to guess what the oil leak was. It was the Oil Pressure Switch. I've gotten to know the Hondas quite well over the last couple years. I bought my granddaughter an '03 CR-V, and I bought an '01 Accord EX 3.0L last year as a hobby car/weekend ride. It never fails with the 2.4L. I finally got all the oil leaks fixed, and replaced the alternator (what a production to even get to the darn thing!), and just noticed yesterday that granddaughter's PS pump is now leaking. It looks like it's coming from the fittings. Going to try and replace the O rings in the return and high pressure connections to see if that fixes it. If not, I can get a reman'ed OEM pump and put it in.

Thanks man .. got a chance to identify a power steering fluid leak I have near my front driver’s side tire while I had my splash guard off (just fixed my AC on my own for the first time and had the bumper + splash guard off so figured I’d check other parts of the car too while they were exposed). Probably just saved me some headaches in the future. Interestingly, the power steering fluid level is holding and doesn’t seem to be leaking at all; the level’s been the same for months and there aren’t ever any puddles I notice underneath. Not exactly sure why I still see fluid everywhere on the parts underneath as if it’s leaking though

Using Honda accessories exclusively is in an ideal world. In my country it is very difficult to find original Honda replacements even oils and fluids, we have to look for after market. But if we go to the dealer, it is possible to find some, but with a value five times higher, or usually they don't have them, wey have yo wait three months, it's very complicated. And Honda is a common brand in my country.

There doesn't seem to be a power steering cooling sub-system for these K-Series Hondas. I don't have one in my Element whereas all the other cars I have owned over the years had something along the lines of a cooling loop in front of the main radiator or a mini-radiator or even a loop inside the bottom tank of the main radiator.

As I mentioned in my comment, I'll say the Oil Pressure Switch. VTEC Solenoid Filter Assembly (the gasket) is too obvious, and when that goes, it puts oil all over the back side of the engine. Since the oil filter looked clean, and there weren't any drips or puddling of oil on the frame and control arm assemblies, but just on the rubber boot over the OPS, I'll go with that. It leaks too, but I've found not as bad as the VTEC Solenoid Filter Assy.

I understand the best way *to avoid the well-known & expensive Honda steering rock failure* is to keep up on your fluid replacement regimen. Steering rack failure is a drag, requiring a tow and losing your car for a few days! Old, dirty fluid will accelerate the wear of your seals, so *replacing the fluid every 3 or so years is pretty cheap!* Either: - Drain and replace - this method involves opening the system. (Ask your garage to do this and ATF changes) - or else pull all the fluid from the reservoir (turkey baster) and replace it a few times, running the system each time it has fluid. This is the less-than- perfect 'dilution method' but avoids disturbing the connections & is still FAR better than ignoring fluid changes until the rack fails (costing you a thousand dollars.)

I just replaced the high pressure line myself. It was very hard to get the nut loose where the metal line connects to the power assist and steering column (I think that's what you call it??). Once I was done installing, I added Prestone power steering fluid, but left the cap off of the resivoir so that I could see if I needed to add more. Yet, the result was that there was now a mess of fluid all over the place including the passenger headlight, all of the parts within 2 feet of the resivoir and pump. As I pulled out, the steering made a lot of noise. Then, I got to the corner of my street as the noise stopped but the steering no longer had any assist whatsoever. After going to the auto parts store to get a full quart of real Honda fluid, I found a puddle underneath.

There is good aftermarket stuff out there , you just have to investigate a little bit. My boot was gushing PS fluid and had to go but I got an aftermarket product and it seems to be working good , zero leaks, a year after. This usually happens to older cars so the expense of putting in a brand new OEA on a car that has limited years on it does not make sense at all. The diff can be as much as 300+ so keep and open mind.

The boot only stops dust and debris from effecting joint, the seals inside the rack are what stop fluid from coming out. New racks are hard to find after the vehicle has aged, most racks (even from Honda) are remanufactured units.

When i turn the steering the fluid in the resovior doesn't really do anything like bubble up. It seems as if its moving through the lines tho but slowly. Also when I press on the gas pedal while the car in park and the engine is running the steering feels more softer but when I ease up it gets back hard. Why is that? Do i need a pump or does it needs bleeding?. One more thing, the fluid levels remain the same.

The first time I experienced steering issues and looked under the hood, I found that a part of the serpentine belt had been completely stripped off. I could have just removed the stripped part, but it seems like something cut the belt. The car also shut off before the belt issue occurred. Therefore, it seems to me that the problem is related to the belt. I replaced that belt now with a slightly longer belt, and the issue persists

I have a 2004 acura tax and cannot find the leak from the steering pump onto my alternator. No issues with my pump really and fluid isn’t really ever that low. So it’s a small leak. Any suggestions? Maybe change all the seals in the pump first before I buy and install a new one?

Hard to say without seeing it but the seals on Honda power steering pumps generally start to leak by that age. The fluid will usually start to deteriorate drive belts if left on them.

The whining noise can be hard to diagnose on these engines, it could be a bad o ring that isn’t even leaking but letting air in , could be alternator bearing, could be tensioner , could even be a transmission bearing issue causing whine , good video tho

My father in law had a power steering leak on his car (2004 Accord). I found it was the upper hose leaking from the pump to the rack. Thing was a BITCH to fish through to the rack, but after a little patience and a lot of cussing, I got it on. My sister in law had low fluid last week. I just happen to hear it when she was leaving and told her to leave it. I didn’t look underneath, but I saw a little oil behind the pump. I changed the Oring on the hose and topped it off. If that doesn’t fix it, I’ll take a better look at, but I’m wondering if I won’t have to rebuild that pump. Is it difficult to do? She has a 2007 Accord.

On the car in this video, do you remember if the pressure line connects to the upper fitting on the ps rack or lower? One brand Maval says it goes on the lower fitting in their description on Rockauto but I don't see how. I just did this job on my 2007 Accord and immediately began having a pop sound at idle speed steering and leaking from the Driver's side inner boot. Making sure I didn't cross-up the lines.

When we mentioned rebuilding pumps, what did you do? I have no power steering at low RPMs, which is supposed to be common in the Odyssey ('06). I replaced all the O-rings and the bearing seal. Is there something else? A whole new pump is pricey, so if a rebuild is possible I'd rather do that.
@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 4 жыл бұрын
I will take them apart and replace all o-rings, seals and bearings, *to correct a leak*. When there are other problems like no power steering assist at low end (which is very common on 2005-2010 Odyddeys) and the issue is the pump, I replace the power steering pump. This is also what Honda does if there is an issue like that. Some of the internal parts (like the flow control valve) are not available separately which I why I do not try to rebuild them for issues like that.

@BigDog50001
@BigDog50001 4 жыл бұрын
I would clean it up and try to pinpoint leak. If the o-rings on hoses were not replaced when it was installed I would replace them with new ones. If it is a used or rebuilt pump, it may have been leaking or not rebuilt correctly before you installed it.
