Күн бұрын

"Rebuilding Collapsed Walls: Working With Lime Mortar and Stones: Renovation Ireland" continues the tradition of using only lime, sand and the stones salvaged from this 200 year old farm building as Dawn continues to repair the collapsed wall in a similar manner to that of 200 years ago. Dawn is keen to get this section of the collapsed wall finished, but will she do it?
Ben tries his hand at carpentry, never his strong point, but wanting to get the living room door re-hung on a new DIY door frame, he bites the bullet. He even gets the bug for woodwork and starts a new project. The farmyard gates are hung too.
Here are a couple of KZbin channels Dawn has been watching ever since we went Sale agreed on The Corner House Back in 2022

J Harvey: • Stone Barn Restoration
Being complete beginners at farmhouse renovation, really needing a "homesteading for beginners" guide and now starting amateur archaeology, we are taking it slowly, enjoying everything we do no matter how hard it is, to one day realise our dream of running a fully functioning homestead from our once derelict Irish Farmhouse.

Thank you Nigel, it never occurred to me that the doors are in the true style of traditional, getting what you have and making something from it. I knew Dawn would do a great job when she said she wanted to do the stone work. She wants to do a bit of everything and says if she could just split herself into little bits so she could do. While she is doing the stone work, I will stay out of trouble and get the easy jobs done hahahaha. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, lovely comments :-)

Dawn, you're too hard on yourself. The wall looks absolutely fine. Practice is all you need and you will get quicker at it. The doors look good. A diagonal brace may be good as may sag/drop eventually if the wood shrinks, but as well seasoned old floorboards may not. The stable door looks great. Next a basic window frame and some glass.

Thank you ☺️ on a whole I’m pleased with it but there’s a few things that stand out that don’t look quite ‘right’ 😂 Funnily enough Ben did say to me about putting the diagonal bracing on but I don’t think he mentioned it on the video, but yeah you could be right with them being old seasoned floorboards but I think he will still put some bracing on because we do get quite a bit of wet/damp weather! 😂 window framing is on the cards too.

Wow, Dawn what are great jobs you're doing on that wall. You're good enough you should do that on the garden Wall also? And Ben with the door was really good, I would make the door frames like they were originally that's a beautiful frame around that door. I cannot get over how well Dawn is doing that work on the building. I bet it's very therapeutic? Much love from Oklahoma USA Jackie 🇺🇸💖 Very nice job on the doors you made Ben! Great job both of you!

Thanks Jackie! Yes it is very therapeutic…the time whizzes on by without any thoughts of anything but stones! Cannot deny it is stressful here and there though, trying to get it all to fit and sit right. I’m guessing that will get easier the more that I do it. 🤞 Yeah I think that’s what we will do with the door framing in the house…it was one of things about the house that really stood out for me when we looked at it so it would be a shame to not replace them. Shed doors looked bloody great don’t they? Ben’s really pleased with how they turned out ❤️

We renovated a totally run down, over 100yo house that hadn’t been lived in for a number of years. My thoughts whilst doing this labour intensive Reno - not only are we breathing new life into it but we’re extending its life for future generations, that was over fifty yrs ago & its looking great with further cosmetic improvements done by many new owners. You should be extremely proud of what you’re doing because it’s awesome, can’t wait to see the House when it’s had a coat of paint 🏠
@thecornerhouseproject
@thecornerhouseproject 2 ай бұрын
It’s a very nice feeling isn’t it? Amongst all the hard work and aching joints, it’s lovely to know that the house will stand proud on the corner for years and years to come. We’re now undecided on painting the house as we may even take the concrete render of the front this year instead of next but if we don’t get the time for that we will give a nice coat of something just to make it look less grey and unhappy! 😂

@@thecornerhouseproject hello you two lovely people I’ve finally caught up and throughly enjoyed every minute of your journey. I’m in awe of not only the hard physical work you do but filming and chatting to us as you work then commenting to your many followers - do you ever have a day off? Your journey brings back so many memories; if I can give one piece of advice, its do not neglect your health, don’t ignore those joints that are screaming to have a rest, it all catches up in old age! Knowing how busy you are, I don’t expect a reply. You take care 🫶🏻

I am impressed with the dedication you have to doing the stone repairs correctly. I also like the finish you are giving the mortar with the stipple brush. It’s beautiful and done right. So many KZbinrs do their stone and mortar work wrong. They use the wrong color sand for their rock, don’t understand the importance of stone placement to insure strength and integrity of the building, use concrete instead of lime, etc. I’m not an expert but I can tell if a DIYer has done their homework. Most have not.

Hi Rebecca / Zoe, thank you so much for watching and commenting. Dawn does like a good book. If you watched our "A very different Christmas" video, the bookcase is full and there are still books in boxes, I can't even say 50% are mine... maybe 2% are mine. If Dawn can learn from a book, that is always the option she goes for, especially if one is recommended to her. We are slowly running out of book space for the house, land and renovation books but I am sure Dawn will find space somewhere for more haha. The walls will all be whitewashed inside and out as soon as we can to give them as much protection as possible against the Irish weather. They look like they were well looked after for a long time with years of whitewash still being visible in a few places. But with all that said, as long as we have a supply of the sand Dawn chose originally, she will carry on as per the books and the couple of KZbin videos she has benefitted from. Thank you so much again for watching and commenting :-)

You could be right Cynthia. I have the vision, just lack the know how. I think I can bodge things enough so they look right in the end though. The wall is brilliant. The hole is nearly finished before Dawn moves on to the next bit. Oh we can't wait for the space, it is huge. The little building is nice to work in now that we have been able to sort it out, but this big one is nearly 3 times the size. Just tonight we were looking out the window on the landing talking about when we get a roof on it. Thank you so much indeed Cynthia for always watching and commenting :-)

Bloody brilliant . Hey Dawn, did you ever think while you was in suburbia you'd ever get so excited over 4 new buckets ? 🤭.. You're doing a wonderful job on that wall . Really impressed how far youve got since i saw it. I did think you might have shut up the negative commentators ....time will tell , loving Ben's doors too. The half door is a brilliant idea . Been roof fixing since Friday. In-between rain showers. Not done as much as you have though. Have a great week .

Good evening young man, how are you? Believe it or not, I bought Dawn professional car cleaning stuff one Christmas, complete with a bucket, she was over the moon, so yes, she was totally expecting her excitement this time with 4 buckets haha. She is easily pleased and low maintenance. With that said, what a great job she is doing isn't she. Hopefully this hole will be finished by the time you call by for a cuppa again. Dawn's idea for the stable door, my idea to make a door and just cut it in half. Maybe this is how you make them, I don't know? But it worked hahaha. "Not done as much as you have though"...... It is all relative mate and things take as long as they take. You did your drainage the other week, we are still needing to do ours.... see what I am saying :-) Always nice to read your comments Mitch, see you soon. Don't work too hard.

Thank you so much Nancy, I am pleased with them if I am honest. The big door just works doesn't it and replaces a dark hole. The stable door works well just so we can see the view down to the trees as we tend to have the large door open when we are outside. I think Dawn will be right on it by the end of all the repairs. Some comments have suggested she builds a wall to shut of the gap between the building and gate post. We were just going to make a bit of fence, but stones will looks nicer. But she is chomping at the bit to get out there again in the morning to get the last few rows finished before the top falls in. Yeah, I may have picked a thing or two up from my Dad, but computers are my thing really. We are getting there. Something simple like the doors outside and in the near future a new roof on the building, it will completely change how it looks. Just like it used to..... we hope. The latest video was interesting as the floor was old cobblestones with a gully running down the middle , I think it maybe similar to what you have.I thought of you two as if you haven’t already seen it , it maybe worth a look. I love watching your renovations and thanks for sharing it with us . Jane

Hi Jane, thank you so much for watching and commenting. Sounds like it is definitely worth a watch as the gully we have is lovely, covered in lime dust at the moment but when they are cleaned they look amazing. It will be nice to see another like it. Our renovations are a bit back and forth, house, land, buildings, but it does mean you never know what the next video will bring hahaha Thank you for the new channel for us to watch.

Just shows the learning and journey you have travelled together. If you just think back to when you started and remember how your confidence was low and at time overwhelmed in the work the house required. Now you have morphed / transformed into this power couple that nothing will stop you and that there is nothing that you cannot achieve together. Be proud. 😇

Good evening Joe, how the devil are you? You have been missed although we know you are busy. Oddly enough, we were only talking about you a couple of days ago, your ears must have been burning. Anyway haha..... Oh yes, we remember it well. We knew we could do it, we just needed the confidence to grab the bull by the horns and make a start. Other than the roof, I don't think there is much we won't have a go at. We ask the fairies in the garden but they said they were busy, so it is just us left to do it. We are extremely proud of ourselves and much stronger and fitter than we used to be. Maybe that helps with the confidence too. It has been nearly 12 months, a lot has been done, a lot still to do and you have been watching and willing us on from a far. Thanks for commenting tonight, you have been missed. Look after yourself.

@@thecornerhouseproject yes been checking on you both, all quiet this end. Sam and becs full steam ahead with a little guidance and support ongoing. Just one couple at present new build design and planning. 4 others this year section 5 and grants approved and all appears making good progress. When the time comes removing the render of the house you will be confident to get back to bare stone and do repairs.

For simplicity on your door frames if wanting avoid detailed scribe utilise the wool expansion roll and then lime pointing. This is typical of an external door fitment historically.

We heard you have been busy, your angel wings are still growing Joe the more people you continue to help. We would have frustrated the living 5h1t out of you in the end. As you can tell, we are very much "lets do that today" now that the house is habitable but we are enjoying every moment of it. We were going to start and remove the concrete on the front of the house this year but decided it can wait until next as this will be a project in it's own right. We have things we want done in the house before the end of Autumn, ready for the winter, so watch this space. I may leave the door frames until the buildings get repointed so they can at least be removed, repointed / repaired and then will look at something permanent, we have insulation left so may just accept your advice :-) Look after yourself :-)

@@thecornerhouseproject You would have never got me frustrated at the end of the day, that happened in week 1 LOL. Just on passing what knowledge and learnings to those that can make use of that, hopefully no angel wings I am more hopefully that will soon have a chance to get a long term sleep in a nice black void. I have always said its your house and you must do what you are motivated to do. You do not have a grant dictating timeline. You got the house watertight and secure, allowing the house to breath and come alive once again. Totally agree on the render for 2025, it was a concern at the early days as to what it was doing to the walls but with all the internal activities you have shown that the house is structurally strong and watertight. Think rebuilding the outhouses is a good plan as it allows for Dawn to really build her expertise in lime and stonework, then it can be used on the main house with confidence and capability. Think the rebuilding of the outhouses, with your cracking door builds gives you a long term secure storage of all the materials and tools, with easy access to the rear garden fields. No more need for storing inside and then moving room by room or storing under tarps or marquees. A home for everything and thus easy to see what you are doing. Even something as simple as the gates gives you security and just makes the place feel that progress is at full speed. You both should be very proud.

You are both doing amazingly. Stop worrying what the professionals are going to think - I am sure if you were there when they first done stone walling/making doors they would be no better and you have to learn the art, it is how they become crafstmen/women. You are doing great. Also, I am sure I heard, that one persons stone wall will be different to another, so patching it in will not be the same, it is like handwriting - so put your signature to those walls x

Good evening Tracy, we hope you are well. We aren't worrying, just trying to put across that we aren't professionals as it tends to cut down on some of the less desirable comments, although pointers are always welcome, but we are slow getting thicker skins. You are absolutely right, everyone starts somewhere and practice makes perfect. Dawn is doing a great job but that is a nice thing to hear that walls are always different like handwriting and I suppose it makes perfect sense really doesn't it. Dawn's signature will be all of these building by the time she has finished haha. If it has a hole or needs some lime somewhere, it will have Dawn's handwriting on it lol. Thank you so very much Tracy for watching, commenting and your support. Have a nice week.

The joins / mortar / pointing, should be no thicker than the masons thumb. Those thick joins will be fine, next time it needs pointing dig some lime out and push some small stones in and repoint it. (I think you could get away with 2 thumbs thick since you are tiny with tiny thumbs). Your stonework is wonderful! It looks beautiful! You will be able to fill in the gaps around Ben's door frames with some smaller rocks and mortar. (if you add some rockwool fibre to the mortar by mixing them together and then pack around the door frames with it with some small stone, it will last very strong for a 100 years.) I am so proud of you Both!!

"I think you could get away with 2 thumbs thick since you are tiny with tiny thumbs" Hahahahaha. We love this Janie. It is funny, Dawn was only saying today about adding some smaller stones in the biggest of joints to help stop any potential movement in the future, so that will probably be done soon knowing Dawn. The rock wool fibre seems to be a popular method as Joe (further down) said about using some of our sheep's wool insulation. We are liking the idea for the living room frame when we do a final door frame and probably dress it back up. The outbuildings could be Dawn'd behind the frames and as I am still trying to fit the diesel heater somewhere, the outbuildings may benefit from being draft free so I can get them nice and toasty in the winter. Hope everything is well and good with you two over their in Canada Janie, and thank you as always :) Have a nice week :-)

@@thecornerhouseproject Oh a nice warm workshop would be fantastic as you never know what kind of repairs might be needed over the winters as you get familiar with the weather and house for the first few years. Dr. had lowered my cholesterol meds and my cholesterol went up again and I got in trouble lol.. I had to remind him he lowered my dose and it's his fault. (It's an ongoing argument between us - it's a hereditary thing). Both grands on Mom's side had pace makers, Mom's younger brother has a pace maker, Mom has AFIB no pacemaker required. Just had a quick play of Noddy for a listen and tend to agree, it does a little bit doesn't it lol. The joists were quite something. The first lot of joists were a bonus as we didn't think they would need replacing...... until we took a closer look. Learning curve.... begin! I will never forget seeing the realisation that we had replaced them all on Dawn's face, it was a picture. We have always got on with doing things, we are like a really small team. Other than strength and a bit more height, this isn't much I can do that Dawn can't. The shoe rack (Ladder shelf) originally had plant pots on it in the hall of our old house, then it just so happened the shoes fit it well. It normally lives in the hall here but got moved when I did some plumbing (AKA having water go everywhere) I am pleased you agree too with the door in the hole being a door hahaha. I'm not sure I agree with the excellent joiner though, but thank you :-) It has been a sunny day here today too, rained last night sometime (good for the water tanks) but today has been lovely. Hi Josefina, how are you? Isn't Dawn doing a cracking job, this is why I say she chooses to be with me as she clearly doesn't need me hahaha. If we can do it, pretty much anyone can, just go for it. The exposed door stones / covered with wooden surround debate will continue I think as some viewers say leave it exposed, some say cover it up again hahaha. We are leaning towards recreating what was there as we would rather restore than renovate in the area that we can, in this case it would be re-create as the timber was too badly damaged to reuse. We will see what happens though, so stay tuned hahaha. We are getting there bit by bit :) Thank you for always being with us and of course being a channel member :-)

Hi, both of you are working very well. I will advise you Dawn to make your mortar more wet. The stones adhere better to the mortar. Wear safety glasses when chipping the stone. A stone chip can hurt your eye. I recommend watching Les Jérômes channel. Those guys are really good at it. I hope that you enjoy your work and that your health was very strong in the rain.

Hi, thank you! I will take a watch of LesJeromes, thank you. We definitely enjoy our work and the rain does not stop us lol. I did have safety glasses on but they are clear so maybe not very visible. Thank you for the recommendation for the mortar, it seems to work well for me and each stone that I lay I always spray down the stones and surrounding area with water so that helps the mortar adhere too. I also spray the mortar here and there if I’m taking a long time to work just so it doesn’t dry too much.

Fantastic work guys! You are both doing a fantastic job 👍. Please wear safety glasses Dawn when working with lime mortar. It can be very dangerous if you get it in your eyes, you can even be blinded as the lime will damage the eyes. Not to mention very painful. I have lived in Poland for the last 8 years and have been working with stone and lime in this time. Believe me you are doing a very very good job 👍.

Aww thank you very much! That means a lot. I’ve been enjoying doing it very much, it’s a very time consuming as a job but in a good way. The hours just whizz by and I wish there were more hours to carry on doing it. 😂

Dawn your research is paying off. research gives you education and doing the work gives you experience. No one is born knowing any of this stuff. The wall looks very good. And the same with Ben. I am sure your dad will give his approval. The rustic door looks good with the stone. Noticeable improvements made this week for sure. Looking forward to the next video. From Florida, just nana 🌳🌳🌳🪨🪨🪨❤️

Good morning Just Nana, how are you? Dawn's research, no matter what it is about, blows my mind. Me, I will have a quick read and either buy something I have been looking for, or have a general gist of how something is done and will do it.... wrong normally. Dawn reads and reads and reads, and then starts on KZbin too, I really did pick a winner - or she picked a winner hahaha. Dad is impressed love him, he might have shook his head once or twice in true My Dad style but I couldn't see him doing it. The outbuilding doors do look like they have always been there and I am really pleased with the end result. Have a lovely week and thank you so much for being a channel member :-)

Thank you for responding. I meant to tell you. I like your doors to the storage building the way they are. Please don’t paint them. I can see you and Dawn Tsing pictures of that stone building with that door and framing them. You could sell prints. I’m serious. You need to hang one in your home too. I am really looking forward to Dawn’s stone work progress. Hope y’all have a good and productive week 🌳🌳🌳🪨🪨🪨❤️

A photo will be nice of it, A3 framed. Dawn's sister gave us a framed picture of The Corner House and gave it to us the day we left, it was such a lovely thing to do. Not sure what I will be doing this week, cutting more root, mowing the grass and weeds but we both know what Dedicated Dawn will be doing hahaha. You have a lovely week too and thank you.

I’ll say it again, you two are amazing. Dawn, I am a book person. I don’t like reading on a tablet, nor do I care for audiobooks. I have a stack of books beside my bed all the time; murder mysteries, Cook books, DIY, History, and non-fiction. I just find them so much easier, but I’m old school as they say. And that wall is looking unbelievable for someone who hasn’t ever even used a cement mixer. Ben, I hope your dad is proud, for those doors look pretty darn good to me. The split door is called a Dutch door in my part of the US, because they were prominent on Dutch colonial houses to allow the breeze in, but also have part of the door closed. I also enjoyed the way you filmed the beginning, and cleverly put the sponsor list in the middle of the video. And I spotted the rare Ben appearance through the window while Dawn was talking. Well that’s enough of me blathering on…see ya next weekend.

Thank you DoryJean. I am completely with you with reading from a proper book, I take in so much more info from paper and print, not sure why….my age maybe! You can’t beat a book for easy reading over and over. Ooh I absolutely love murder mystery stuff…who do you read? I’m like you and just love to read whatever the topic! Really pleased with how the wall has turned out, still a tiny bit to finish off tomorrow but chuffed to bits with it especially as I was so hesitant to start it! Aww yes Bens dad is very proud of him for the doors. I had never heard of them called Dutch doors before until I googled it the other day. I didn’t want to lose the lovely view from the outbuilding so it seemed the best way to go and if we ever get a donkey then we have a stable door for it lol Thank you, Ben likes to try different things here and there for the editing, worked really well this week. 😊

Oh it’s definitely worth giving things ago isn’t it? Otherwise you’d never know if you could do it or not. Takes me a while to muster the courage to start sometimes but I eventually get there! lol Ben is good at just getting stuck in with it all and it pays off because the doors look beautiful and fit so well with the stonework.
