Old disabled house bound dusty rusty rockhound here: Excellent explanation. Collecting out in the field requires more effort too. Lots of sorting ....to find the preferred image potentials. The suspicion and excitement build in your quest for that perfect picture. Heartbreaking...sometimes. Boring....never!

Picture jasper is awesome. Going from raw rock to a finished project is very time intensive. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! You got quite a few really nice slabs out of your rocks! And you have quite a bit of rock left over from each. And those two rocks that you are giving away on the members side are really nice and generous indeed. I love picture jasper. The pictures that you can get out of them, is just amazing to me. Jasper just doesnt get the love that agates do, and it should. Its beautiful in all its forms! Thank you for the picture jasper tutorial! Its just lovely!

Beautiful material. Thanks for explaining this process with picture jasper. It can actually be applied to other rocks as well. This is a great video for everyone, people who already make slabs and cabs and those of us who want to start doing so. Thank you for another fantastic video Jared!✌️🤠

Great video! The one thing I would say about trade names, while they have zero scientific value, is that they're often referencing a specific location or deposit. So while a name like "starry night jasper" is just marketing jargon, it does reference a specific deposit in the McDermitt caldera

Getting a good quality picture from the rough is a little in the luck of the cut, or many cuts, and even then it's hit or miss. Thanks for explaining and demonstrating what drives up the costs. Looking forward to the projects with those slabs.

Another great vid Jared! I've been getting some really nice picture jasper out of the "double-mint" green on my jasper claim. I'll try to send you a sample. And yes, it can be a lot of work, especially when you start by hammering it out of a 100' tall cliff and packing it down a treacherous canyon😝

Have gold claims in Owyhee county, and have been saving some cool looking rocks over the years, just learning what Jasper all looks like, and I've got probably 5 10 lb pieces. At least one is Bruneau it looks like to me, one bright red, and one tan with some dark lines like these. Going back out next month and will have to look for more as we dredge down through the creek bottom. Have one unidentified boulder left still from deep down in the silica hard packed layer last time that just didn't fit for the area. We're in rhyolite lava cliffs and I assume the cool stuff washes into the canyons and gets stuck. Where is a good place to post a picture of that Unid'd rock? It's probably a good 40 lbs and weathered strangely with big open pockets around it. I just dragged it out the other day and washed it down to take pictures.

Yes, you are correct in that Jaspers in general are all Jasper. However, you can get some really nice stuff with location specific names. Owyhee is one. There is also the Bruneau Jasper eggs (and yes, they are Thunderegg!), Willow Creek Thunderegss are beautiful as well. You mention McDermitt, in that area is Larsonite, aka. Gary Green, now known as Freedom Jasper. WTH? Anyway There are Biggs and Deschutes which are right next to each other geologically. There's Ochoco Rim Jasper aka Batcave Jasper near Prineville Reservoir. The White Fir Thunderegg are Jasper filled eggs. Most of the Petrified Wood from Hampton Butte is a Jasper replacement. There is a fairly uncommon Jasper found in the Ochocos called Vistaite. I think the first slab you showed was from McDermitt? There are a couple of locations there beside the Gary Green. There is Disaster Peak Picture Jasper and Chicken Track (neither of which polish very well). Then you can get into the more expensive stuff like Morrisonite and Blue Mountain and/or Rocky Butte Picture Jasper. I think there are enough Jasper location in the northwest you could write a book just on Jaspers. If you have questions about any of these, I've worked all of them over they years and collected about half of these locations too.
@CurrentlyRockhounding
@CurrentlyRockhounding 2 жыл бұрын
Oh for sure! I have heard of many of those locations and hope to someday make a personal visit to them. There is a book called Picture Jaspers of the Northwest by Hans Gamma but I don't have a copy.

Is 'picture jasper' primarily these color tones? I find a lot of mostly smaller stones with designs that form pictures to me, but I have an overactive imagination maybe. These aren't always brown/earthy tones though. Jasper categorizing is confusing to me.
