Finding the Right Tarot Deck

I started with the Marsielle deck instead of RWS and I'm glad I went that route as I find it makes approaching decks made by different artists much easier. I often find in deck reviews by those who started with RWS is they often times struggle with decks that have different symbolism than they're used too, or struggle with having both positive and negative interpretations with some cards due to the imagery coming off as negative (sword cards and tower being the most common.)

I won’t lie, my favorite thing to do with my tarot deck is to ask it yes and no questions. I feel like I’m having a full conversation with it. Also, it’s less likely to call me out on my bull crap, because it always calls me out. But I like it

I agree that the Modern Witch tarot is so thick. It is hard to shuffle. I do adore the artwork and reading the cards. I do have some RWT decks but to be honest , I really don’t like the artwork though they are good decks to learn with. I have a couple of pip decks and because I know the RWT , I can read the pip decks. Most of my decks are RWT style. My Dreams Of Gaia is partially RWT, but a little different.

I currently own just 2 tarot decks (although I'm lusting after several others): an original RWS style deck purchased in high school (ye gods, was I actually ever that young?) at a Spencer Gifts store in a mall, and a Mucha Tarot deck bought online within the past year. The former (still in irregular use) is what I began learning with and has stood up astonishingly well considering it dates back to the mid 1970s. The latter is one I immediately wanted the first time I saw it, and I saved up a bit (it's very reasonably priced but my wallet is empty). I connected with the new deck immediately -- not just because I like the artwork so much, but also because I like a great deal of Alphonse Mucha's artwork and visited his former home (now a museum) in Brussels back when I lived nearby... so it has some overlap with a special time in my life. That latter may be another important factor to take into consideration... not just how pretty the artwork or styling of a deck is, but how well it meshes with/recalls part of/ reflects your life. (And thanks for the bonus cat! )

I bought several r w s based decks that I didnt get the imagery to sink in, but got a copy of the wildwood tarot deck and love it.

A flat surface is something to keep in mind when it comes to the size of the cards. I wouldn't like that modern witch Tarot because I don't have a lot of flat surfaces at my current house, and until I get moved I don't plan on adding new furniture to the said apartment. LOL!

The Botanica deck is my absolute fave, the only caviat is that the cardstock is so stiff that i get mini paper cuts when i shuffle 🥲 i have really small and sensitive hands so i do the tablescramble to mitigate that. Great for people that are herbalists!

I got the Dreams of Gaia deck as my first one, I still love it and it's my main deck. Then I have the fairy blessing cards and recently the Animal dreaming oracle as a pick a random card deck and I really like them too. Lots of good ones to choose from

I actually started with an....intimate position tarot deck. It truly did call to me, and I visited the head shop where it lived multiple times before purchasing ($7.99 USD). I didn’t know how to read tarot AT ALL and the artwork was not extremely helpful (there were a couple RWS callbacks, but the artwork was extremely simple and obviously every card involved two people on a landscape). Suit names and certain major arcana were also changed to dirty puns, further complicating matters. But we worked with each other and I slowly grew more competent. Now that I have a “type 1-2” deck (sacred rose tarot), I can clearly see that my dirty deck was full of personality; but also that it was giving me readings with biases, weird messages, and underhanded delivery. I don’t want to say that makes it inherently less useful, but I do use my newer deck more often despite feeling less connected to it. Maybe it would feel different now that I’m learning the basic meanings of each card?

Love that you have a copy of the Botanica! I am so in love with this deck, and it works nicely for my herbalism practice :-) Taking a while to learn it, but a really interesting deck to work with.

I have a trade copy of the Celtic Tarot by Courtney Davis, and while I loved the images, the cards were just way too big for my hands. I have very short fingers and these cards were both long and wide and I felt like a little kid trying to handle this deck. They had a fairly large white margin around all sides of the cards, so I trimmed that margin off and now my cards are much easier to handle and I think the images pop a little bit better too.
