Omgosh I LOVE that scoop! I have one but not on a long handle. My bucket scoop has been a tremendous help the few times I was able to get out this year. Having had surgery and complications after I haven't been able to go out much. When I went out my grandkids would use my scoop and bring loads of rocks to me to go thru. But one with a long handle would help us so kids wouldn't have to go out into the water as much although they love getting in the lake. Lol. I will definitely be looking into getting a scoop like that.

I am really jealous. I was in the Upper Peninsula MI last weekend. I was really annoyed that I didn't get the chance to go to the beach during daylight hours. I found one little agate, similar to one in this video, next to my car at the place we were staying, so at least there's that. But I can find agates just like those where I live, so it wasn't the thrill I was hoping for. I did get a yooperlite though!

I’ve been avoiding buying the ones on Amazon because of the reviews stating the poor quality. Thanks for sharing this. I may end up getting one of these. Question for you. Do you know if the DNR frowns upon disturbing the lake/river beds like this? Seems like it could be something they might care about but don’t know. I’ve been meaning to contact someone to be sure but haven’t gotten around to it. I’ve found a method of turning over rocks in shallow streams when they are covered in silt and scum and have done really well finding big agates but am afraid that it may be illegal.
@AgateDad2 жыл бұрын
The Minnesota DNR states, in reference to looking for gold but can be applied here, small shovels can be used but must not disrupt natural plant life in rivers. I’ve never seen a living plant in Lake Superior so we are all good there, caution and care should be executed in rivers and creeks though. I think if it’s just a rocky creek, no visible plant life, it’s fair game for searching the rock bed. The quality of this scoop is unbelievable, let me know if you have any questions Matt!
@mattwodziak17502 жыл бұрын
@@AgateDad Thanks for the detailed reply and for knowing the law. I tried searching for that type of language but never found anything. Seems pretty grey but I understand it’s intent. Seems if you are just turning over rocks with a little river scum on them isn’t likely what the law had in mind. I use a small wire rake just to turn over the rocks and then go back and look at what was turned over. I’ve found my three biggest and some of my best agates doing that in the span of a month. FYI… still waiting or a Thomsonite video where you try removing them from the host rock. I was pretty successful this summer with that. I didn’t have anything bigger than a dime but it was relatively easy. I ended up tumbling the pieces when I was done and they looked awesome.
@AgateDad2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I have a few pieces that are nice but I am nervous about the removal of host form the thomsonite. I think light working of stones in algae isn’t the biggest deal, the thing is, people who like to cause trouble will make trouble if they see you doing that, so even though it isn’t that big of a deal and isn’t a mining operation style of agate hunting, people can cause issues just to be menaces.
@mattwodziak17502 жыл бұрын
@@AgateDad Good chat. Thanks for the info. I blame you for my new hobby of agate hunting. Last fall I was up on the north shore with the family and wanted to try agate hunting. Found nothing because I didn’t really know what I was looking for. Over the winter, videos started popping up on my KZbin feed and I believe yours were the ones I started watching first. You did a fantastic job of explaining and showing me what to look for. KZbin must have been listening to me talk about it because I never searched it even once. I subbed your channel first and now my wife is annoyed about all the rocks laying around the house. I have 2 tumblers and one of the treasure scoops. We named ours scoopy doo. It’s a great cheap hobby and very kid friendly. I think we may try and get our over MEA for some hunting. Need to try some farm fields and may try rivers in central MN. Or we may head to the north shore somewhere. We’ll see.
