For everyone: the Knoll Europe version is chromed steel and in the US you can also get stainless steel as an option. The two originals from the Barcelona Pavilion had bolted, chrome-plated frames with ivory pigskin cushions. Fast forward to 1960, and we get the first Barcelona chairs made from stainless steel (Jerry Griffith, Chicago). In 1964 Knoll adopted this material. Mies van der Rohe said he would have used stainless from the beginning if it had been available at the time.

The Knoll version was originally made in aluminium and later in stainless steel by Jerry Griffith, so thanks to third parties the chair is what it is now. + it isn't chrome plated anymore, this was before 1960 when they used aluminium.

If I send you photos of my chairs (I have two), can you tell me what year they were made?

In Europe it is only available chrome plated and in the States chrome plated and stainless steel as a more expensive option

can someone tell me how much days it take to prepare barcelona chair.....need this for college project
@twistoffat15 жыл бұрын
The Irony is Mies Van Der Rohe´s original chairs were not chromed. I know you say it was a knew way to treat the chair but the treatment is not true to the original. It allows a cheaper quality steel to be used and chroming it stops it rusting

Not only was the original stainless steel rather than metal plate just as you wrote, the joints were screwed flush rebated joints too.... there was not a single rivet or weld mark . Knoll makes a nice version but its not identical to the original... there is a gap in the market imo

@uzapuca Oh, I'm sorry, I realize that I wasn't clear. I meant that the process required for producing this chair makes it expensive. I think that there exist a bit easier ways of producing this quality of design and which would even lower the costs. Otherwise, the chair is well proportioned in many ways and is comfortable, which is quite important as well.

@eschersky Good point but nevertheless Mies never intended the Barcelona Chair to be mass produced. He always carried an artisian mastercraft spirit one piece at the time and sincerely looked down on mass produced objects.

Everybody discussing the different versions and stuff like that while I'm here thinking about Lilly Reich and all of the important work she did with Mies. The Barcelona chair was truly unique. I got mine from an aptly named site called Barcelona Designs.
