The beauty of French villages is almost unparalleled. In Spain we have the nature potential, but we messed up most of our beautiful views with horrendous building plans during the 50´s to the 80´s mainly, but even nowadays. I´m glad that you took care of the aesthetics of your country.

I love the sense of history your videos convey. You know you're in an old place when "The War" the locals refer to is The Hundred Year War! With such deep history, who needs street names or addresses? Anyone who needs to know those things already does. Thanks for sharing such magical places so artfully.

I spent three months driving all over southern France with my French then-girlfriend in 2010. We canoed that very section of the Dordogne river and did all the tours and stuff. It's been 11 years and those three months are still the coolest part of my life!

I've passed thru France as a small child post-war going to Switzerland to visit my grandparents around 1948 or so, but only recently have I 'seen' this beautiful, creative country via KZbin....they have imagination & culture all over & a delightful attitude in what makes a 'house' ! The stonework & all those blue shutters & quirky buildings everywhere just make me smile.....love it all....thank you for this film, I am a fervent admirer of this country forever !

@@egesajesse She is not... long story. I was 36. She was a lot younger. I'd never have been able to do this without her though as she was a native speaker (from Paris). One thing people may not know is that France doesn't have any laws against camping on the side of the road (unless that's changed). We had one of those tents that self-erects when you let it go so we simply drove where the day took us, found a meadow or a clearing in the forest or on a hilltop, and spent the night. We'd do hotels a couple times a week. We ate out of a cooler and box of food we supplied from the grocery stores to keep costs low. I have to say, it was liberating! If you can go, go! I'd be happy to suggest my list of must do places if you'd like, but I'm sure you already have one :)

When I was that age, my Grandpa who lived on a steep hill had JUST finished building a fence down his canyon. My brother and I were climbing down there and I "accidentally on purpose" dislodged a volleyball sized rock. I expected the wooden fence to stop it. Instead, the rock rolled right through it with a loud *CRACK!* that resounded through the canyon.

A little seat right beside/in the fireplace (like the seating spot he demonstrated just before 6:30) is called an "inglenook." They're really _VERY_ common in cold climates! I've always wanted to live in a cave/home like that one, so this video awakens some _VERY_ old yearnings in me. I don't think I ever _WILL_ live in a cave/home, though, as I'm getting too old & crippled up for stairs, etc. Oh, well, perhaps in my _NEXT_ life.... 😉 I'm looking forward to that!

This sort of reminds me of a family legend. Before that branch of the family moved to the Americas, the (various descriptions of the residence) was in the side of a cliff, and you couldn't see it until you were (10 feet is the common claim) from the (main entrance). This was the Dillivan family, which is Americanized from de l'Auvergne or de la Vergne or...? That branch of the family has been here since the 1720s, and it all sounded pretty fantastical to me, but I look at that and wonder. As well, I have had a fascination for dug-outs, berm houses, and cave dwellings for... well. .. since I was a young child. Always made sense. Thermal consistency, weather protection (as long as the water table doesn't raise, or the walls don't leak in a torrential rain).
