Young priest turns forsaken farm into paradise homestead

Five years ago Catholic priest Johannes Schwarz left his parish to "withdraw for a few years" in the Italian Alps (in the shadow of his beloved Monte Viso). He bought an old "rustico" - stone farm building - for 20,000 euros and transformed it into his mountaintop hermitage.
Inspired by the early Christian desert hermits from the "200s and 300s when some people went into the deserts of Egypt and Palestine searching for a more rigorous life", Schwarz found something remote: he has only one full-time neighbor on the entire mountainside and in winter, he often has to snowshoe for a couple hours just to buy food and supplies.
To be as self-sufficient as possible, he makes his own bread and stores plenty of potatoes which he grows using Ruth Stout's "No-Work" gardening method. To grow much of his own fruit and produce, he terraced the steep hillside (using stones from the area) to create micro-climates. "You try to build walls that have southern exposure because they heat up during the day and they give off the warmth and can make a difference of several degrees." (Studies show differences of 27°F/15°C in the ultra-deep Incan terraces). He grows plenty of tomatoes inside his self-built recycled greenhouse.
For heating and cooking, he built a combination rocket stove and masonry heater by creating his own casts and loam coating. His refrigerator, which he transported up the hill on top of his bicycle, is kept in the unheated room, along with his food stores. He uses a tiny 30-year-old 3-kilogram washing machine and built his bathroom out of salvaged materials. To transport the lumber up the hill for his remodel, he got some help from a local farmer.
He divided the old barn into four small rooms on two floors; the living room/kitchen and pantry on the ground floor and a chapel and bedroom upstairs. His bedroom also serves as an editing studio where he creates videos on philosophy and religion.
He created a wooden-arched indoor chapel where he “celebrates the traditional Latin mass” alongside a wall he painted with Byzantine, romanesque and gothic styles in appreciation of "the symbolism of the ancient art."

Hi. Fr. Johannes here. Wow! You all have found such kind words about my hermitage and my life in the mountains. I assure you, it all looks better when Kirsten and Nicolas are holding the camera to it - but thankfully not too close :-) They make me look good - much like when they call me a "young priest" in the video title. For a 43 year old bolding guy with the first streaks of grey in his beard to be called „young“ might just be polite flattery, but I take it :-D Allow me to answer some of the questions that came up in the comments (some of them more than once). „Like“ to make this one-stop-reply more visible - or if you, Kirsten/Nicholas are reading this, maybe you want to make it a pinned comment) - electricity?: the previous owners connected the house to the grid when the opportunity presented itself some 30 or so years ago. The pole is visible in some shots on the right above the house. I don't know how much it costs to get connected, but if lines are nearby - in this case on the other side of the mountain - I think it is managable. - internet?: I use an antenna to augment the cell signal coming from the valley. It can be seen in the right hand corner of the balcony and works fine (most of the time). But it of course means that I watch youtube, and also Kirstin's inspiring videos, in 360p - water?: I'm connected to a spring that is further up the mountain. It used to be a communal spring that serviced also the houses on the other, northern side of the mountain. It was later (90s?) incorporated into the regional water works. It now is no longer free, but on the other hand if a leak occurs (about once a year) professionals set out to find and patch it. - diocesan hermit, how? possible?: I'm fortunate that my diocese (the Archdiocese of Vaduz, Liechtenstein) has many more priests than parishes, which makes it easier for the bishop to allow me to pursue life in a hermitage and going for „extra long walks“. Other than that, there is an actual provision in Canon law (§603) that properly regulates and recognizes diocesan hermits - garden skills: Not that many skills yet. I'm only beginning to dabble in permaculture. If my thumbs are a little green it is probably because of my Mom, who was patient even when I excarvated and removed 100 bulbs of Peonys to errect a crooked wooden shed as an 8 year old. It was then that I realized that plants need care and don't just pop up. But youtube and the permies forum have been great resources since. - my career? I don't get paid by the church as I currently don't work in a parish or in another official capacity. I also don't take donations (as others need them more than I do). I'm lucky that I get booked and paid for speaking tours for a few weeks in winter that revolve around my pilgrimages. Germany - and less so also Switzerland and Austria - outside Covid have a lively scene of travel festivals and events, where my usually somewhat humerous storys about Romanian sheep dogs, weird encounters in Armenia or despair in thunder storms on mountain passes find a few laughs and buyers of my books (available only in German so far). I hold retreats externally, occasionally help out in parishes and am guest professor for fundamental theolgy at a religious house of studies. All of this supplements my income and is certainly more than sufficient for a simple life. - cost?: So the price for the hut and 1.5 acres of land was 22.000 € (compared to renting a hut in Austria for 3 years which would have been basically the sam 18-21.000 €). When you buy in Italy you have to pay a fee to the agency (if it is not a private sale) that may be a % of the price or in the case of cheap buildings such as mine it would be a standard fee anywhere from 3-5000 €. Some costs for a notary (1000 €) will also likely be applicable. If you want to change the exterior or even some parts of the exterior, you'll need to hire a geometra/architect. These fees combined with the fees for building permissions will depend on what the changes are. - where to find such properties in Italy? I used „immobiliare dot it“ - instagram account? Yep. "4kmhpunktcom". I'm not very good at posting pics of my meals, but when I'm on the road I sometimes use it as a "short blog" - rocket mass heater video? Yes there is one on vimeo (search for Hermit’s Hot Hog) - but just a timelapse. In the description there you will however find a link to the bulletin board concerning the Vortex stove that is the design that I followed. - solar air collector? I use the solarventi sv14. Works fine for me. But it could be built much cheaper if you do it yourself - something I may do in the future. - can one just build whatever one wants? No, not in Italy. In Austria I would not even have been allowed to build the stove myself (or I would have needed a professional to inspect it and clear it for use). So you have to work with local regulations that may vary depending on where you are (I enlisted the help of a local geometra to sift through what I would be allowed to do. A great guy with expert knowledge of applicable laws who saved me from delving into burocracy myself and asked virtually nothing for his services. I certainly was lucky) - does the hermit have youtube channels? Yes. I have three: one with Theology and Philosophy in German ( kzbin.info ), one for hiking videos ( kzbin.info/door/Am0XitO95k9UsmlXMtHloA ) and an old one that has many languages ( kzbin.infofeatured ) I do not have one vlogging about daily life and don't plan one. I plan a few silent (no words) episodes about life here in the mountains (12 episodes, one for each month of the year) but that will not happen for a while, as I hope to be on a pilgrimage again next year (Via Columbani from Ireland to Italy). - earthquakes? In this particular part of the alps getting anything above a 4 is exceptionally rare. I have witnessed 4.1 a few years ago. No worries. - english language content? What a very thoughtful thing for you to do. Taking time to spell out answers to various questions is a really considerate. I spend most of my time in a small home on a lake in the states. I'm always working on various projects to stay busy so much of this relates. For example, harvesting stones for weeks in the forest building an outdoor fireplace. ​@@susanyates4233 Hi Susan. Good Question. In fact, maybe you noticed that in the video I use „we...“ a few times when speaking of the renovation. Kirsten just had to edit my long ramblings and that part where I mentioned different people who helped ended up on the cutting room floor for brevity. A few young men (former altar servers from my old parish), three of whom work in construction now, wanted to help and they visited for a day with one of the dads (owner of a construction company). That was a big help - also because they brought professional tools I don't own (like a diamond core drill for one of the walls that received the solar air heater). They dug out the earth floor in the pantry/bath/shower room; put up insolating plaster behind where the shower now is; opened up the ceiling from the ground to the top floor for the stairs; cast the bottom section of the stairs. A neighbor with a tractor helped me bring up the wood for the interior. Local builders opened the hole for the door to the bathroom area, because it had to be done to code (steel beams all around), and a local building material company brought the stuff I ordered (like the wood fibre insolation and fire bricks for the stove...) with their special narrow and short 4x4 "truck" that was made for gnarly roads as the one leading to my place (and which my car cannot manage. A Suziki Jimny or an old Fiat Panda from the 80s would be ideal. But I don't have one of those). Lastly my dad came out for a few days from Austria and helped me with plumbing. I think that is it. I started renovation in April 2016 but until July I still had to work in Austria so I could only come for a week or two at a time. From the middle of July until the middle of September I think I was pretty much done with everything. So after 3 months it was livable (though I had been living there from day 1). Mind you, the roof was ok as were the walls, I had water and electricity (though both needed to be modified for the new layout), so I was not renovating a ruin. Now the oratory initially had a temporary altar piece for quite some time and I only started on the garden and the exterior later. I'm still building and working on things. Since Kirsten was here, I've been working on two ponds for water storage (garden) and microclimates (one of them above the house). I'm also trying to create a winter greenhouse/sunroom for passive solar by modular and removable structures (to comply with bulding regulations) with acryllic glass under the balcony (and for the top section of the balcony on the right). So I'm replacing the metal fencing of the balcony with a more traditional one in chestnut wood but a way to fasten the glass panels. Also the floor of the balcony needs to be replaced. So there is always something. It is a good counter balance to much of the work I have to do at the computer. And there is no rush.

The Vatican City issues its own coins and stamps. The Vatican's most important source of ready cash is made up of donations from parishes across the globe. The money is spent on humanitarian projects, including disaster relief, medical aid, and help to the poor in developing nations, children, and refugees. If I remember it correctly there was a huge uproar in Italy for the Vatican paying no tax, I think they repaid 5 of the 7 million tax back already. Although priests earn a modest salary, much of their income is earned through housing allowances, stipends, bonuses, and other benefits. These benefits are often provided by the church or parish to support the spiritual development of their community. To make a long story short, no taxpayer is involved.

Ditzy.52 Forgive me, but do we, one bad apple can spoil the bunch, the Catholic Church has a whole bunch of bad apples, in n.y.c, the repercussions of all these child abuse cases has caused many closings of schools as well as churches. I love being a catholic, and am very proud to be one, but by casting a blind eye to heinous abuse no matter who committed them is just as bad. I've renovated a few properties in Italy myself, with the benefit of modern tools and with easy access to builders merchants, masons, electricians and all the rest of it and even then it's hard work all the way. Also old Italian buildings throw out random problems that you have to improvise solutions to and overcome so it's no easy task, but what I'd like to say is that this guy deserves a medal for doing all that work up there on his own and doing all the heavy lifting himself, well done indeed.

When I became a contemplative hermit many years ago, This would have been my dream location . Silence and solitude in the lap of God. But I had family responsibilities which kept me in the US. I occupied a one room shack without toilet or running water in Vermont. Later I had to move to New York to be close to a reverently celebrated Mass (unfortunately Novus Ordo, but still reverently celebrated, and the people were still kneeling to receive Our Lord and on the tongue). Later all that changed.... I am really surprised that your Bishop allows you this, especially to celebrate the Mass of Immemorial Tradition. What a great BLESSING!. Please pray for me, Father. He truly has a romantic side to him, but not in the way most people would think reading this comment. His romantic side is one of true love of life, which can be seen in how much life he has given the Hermitage and his home. Truly an inspirational man! If I am to ever get to the Italian Alps again, I'll look him up...it would be great to bring him some supplies he was needing, just to sit with him for a short time and become friends. I'm Traditional Catholic so this Priest is right up my alley. I only attend the Tridentine Rite. His amazing painting of the Icons is incredible. He needs to build a little larger chapel because people are going to search him out for the Mass. The Tridentine Rite is the closest thing to Heaven on earth, and this hermit is getting the best of both worlds. Notice his easy going manner and his peaceful countenance. He's obviously very close to God and so attuned to nature that nature seems to bow to him. Beautiful!

I have tried the trindentine mass and I just cannot connect. I speak Italian so it's not for lack of comprehending. I have found some of the priests doing the mass severe and haughty! I'll keep trying because I love to sing traditional latin hymns. My overall impression is still negative! I love Latin hymns and I also love contemporary praise and worship and I feel I can worship better with a language I use everyday for evertything! God does not care as long as we praise and worship and enter his loving presence! I don't think!

@@ivancassar1239 Keep searching for the right Church which offers the Mass. If the Priest isn't valid or Holy it makes a huge difference. Priest are human and personality isn't essential for doing God's work. His Heart is what God seeks and desires. Read the Cure d'Ars by Abbe Trochu. Beautiful life of a beautiful Priest. Look for an Italian Latin Missal. It's really a no brainer.

Major kudos for this man's way of life. His talent, his sincerity, his work ethic and his erudition are all impressive. The ultimate rationale for monasticism is that it benefits the world. His life has benefitted me in the vicarious experience it provides me! The art, building craft, and horticulture demonstrated here are impressive. As to the oratory (chapel) I would say that he has achieved transcendent architecture in an intimate space. Clearly, the spirit does not need soaring Gothic scale to achieve an environment that promotes prayerful aspiration.
