The best thing about Xtreme is how... how consistently trippy it is. There are so many different versions of the same game that look nothing alike, and each of these versions looks like a fever dream. Fish-eye lens, slowdowns, uncanny Sonic model, alien level design, so... so weird. It almost makes sense that it got cancelled. Fever dreams ain't real, you know.

I'm not surprised over the discourse between Sega of Japan and America. The way Sega of Japan always had the final say in anything makes you wonder what was the point of the American division. And of course the whole company has payed the price for it sadly time and time again.

I personally think the fishbowl effect is pretty awesome. It makes the game trippy as hell, but also gives it this crazy sense of scale that sucks you in. I've seen "Z-Treme," a fan project that's basically the same game but... without the fishbowl. And it's crazy how small and bland the levels are without that effect making them SEEM huge. The game was simply built around the mechanic and is most enjoyable that way.

Same here! The fisheye effect also looks very useful too; able to see what up ahead, behind you and so on. It's a cool concept! Don't see why some people find it nauseating. Z-treme doesn't do this but Project AXSX does; it replicates the later build at 1:37 to a tee but better. I recommend checking out that fan project, it looks stellar so far!

Seriously, a documentary about Sega's long history of fuckups would be amazing. How a little pinball company can turn into a video game giant overnight and then immediately blow it would be so interesting, I'm shocked it apparently hasn't been attempted yet.

It's a shame how much of a development hell this game went through, but I honestly think it's all for the best that this was never released. That fish eye lens camera and the idea of shifting gravity, along with the whole level, when going through inclines are so disorienting.

Sonic X-treme is so fascinating to me. The history, the different builds it went through, the stuff that were planned for it. . . I think the later build with the fish eye shown at 1:37 looks great. If only development was much smoother and everything gone to plan, because that build actually looks really fun to play. The fish eye is actually really cool in this and super useful, I'm not sure how this looks nauseating/disorienting to be honest. In terms of fan attempts that you mentioned earlier, Project AXSX is the best one, no contest. It looks exactly like that build at 1:37 but better and more. It looks SO GOOD! It's amazing that this fan attempt of resurrecting X-treme started in 2006 and is still going to this day. I can't wait for a new SAGE demo of this project, since there's only the 2011 demo (which no longer represents the current state of the project)! This project looks like what could of been if X-treme had a much better fate and it deserves more attention. Plus the people behind this project are the ones that discovered the builds that were leaked and released to the public not too long ago, so huge props for them for digging up lost pieces of Sonic/video game history.

Seems like the rift between sega of Japan on Sega of America’s development studios is what ultimately fucked the sonic franchise and sega as a whole in the 90s. Such a shame because I think that the version of X-treme using the nights code looks very promising the way Christina was using it. Too bad Yuji didn't want it to happen.

Couldn't they render Sonic's sprite along with rings, enemies and all other things on the VDP2? Then render the 3D levels on the VDP1. Tbh I absolutely love how those PC promos look, and I'm crazy about the fish eye lens, but it's so obvious that couldn't run on a Sega Saturn as is. I'd love to see an actual half decent attempt at replicating that look on a Saturn, complete with the sprites for characters instead of 3D Models.
