So fun fact, my experience with this movie started out at around 3 AM. I was living alone at the time, doing the whole insomnia thing where you can’t sleep at all the matter how hard you try, so I figured I’d throw this on and just kind of halfway pay attention like you do with most horror movies. That being said, that was definitely a massive mistake. The lawnmower jump scare scene got me so bad that I actually ended up falling off of my own couch. This movie is seriously underappreciated, Ethan Hawke was fantastic in this, the sound, the design of the jump scares, honestly the only place this movie seems to really fumble the bag is the end, it’s a little bit ham-fisted. But even then, this movie is literally one of my favorites, and I will always go back to re-watch this, glad you got to be traumatized by this as well.

personally this is still the scariest horror film i’ve watched. it’s great ‘cause like you’ve mentioned, some of those tapes were filmed in places we might’ve been to a lot growing up or something familiar to us, so the deja vu just really adds up to the creep factor of the movie
@ethantinsley8185 Жыл бұрын
It’s interesting that you experienced Dejavu during this and I don’t think you’re alone on that. I also remember experiencing something similar when I first watched it, which might have been an intentional component to the film to induce feelings of nostalgia. This kind of nostalgic or familiar abstract feeling can add an element to horror that can be very frightening. The subgenre Analog Horror uses this a lot and I would argue that these film scenes are a form of Analog Horror itself, or rather Analog Horror inside of a psychological horror movie.

One thing that I love about the lawn mower jumpscare is that it's not on a beat. Usually with jumpscares, there's a 1-2-3, so you can almost always brace yourself for when it happens, like choreography or something. But with this particular jumpscare, there's not rhythm to it, so when I watch it, sometimes it seems like it happens faster than I expect and sometimes if seems like it happens later than I expect. The brilliance of that is that it almost always catches me off guard. I don't know if the filmmakers were thinking like that, but all i know is I can usually see jumpscares from 10 miles away and no matter how many times I watch this movie, I never see the lawn mower coming.

For me, the second sinister completely missed the point of what made the first one so scary. They go into too much details of the lore, they show way too much of balgul making both him and the lore less scary. And while the tapes are more gory. They are overproduced as well. They are overexposed where you can practically see everything in the tapes compare to the very limited lighting and actually nighttime shooting in the original tapes. And the kills just feel so much more goofier than in the first one where they feel like they’re from Friday the 13th and not like something I accidentally stumbled across the internet. Fun fact, the dad from this movie also plays the killer in black phone
@RandomOne1999 Жыл бұрын
There’s a theory that baghuul is actually helping the kids get out of abusive families and taking them to his realm to be happy forever (albeit very violently so he can feed off the sacrifices) because the kids in part 2 don’t seem scared but legitimately happy and the ones to commit the killings are always isolated and left out
@newhappythoughts1628 Жыл бұрын
That’s the only good thing about the sequel. It gives us better insight into why the kids would be so influenced to commit these atrocities. They're left vulnerable due to family issues not captured on film. For Sinister 1, the kids seem miserable. The son keeps having bad night terrors, the daughter is missing her friends, the dad is neglecting them, and the mom’s seconds away from divorcing him. I think using 2, it’s heavily hinted that the daughter and son were watching the tapes when the dad wasn't. I really wished 2 was written better.

This movie is near perfect save for a couple hangups. The tone, lighting, score are perfect. The presentation of the murders with Super 8 projection had haunting 8MM vibes. What sours it is the unneeded jumpscare WOMPS like with the lawnmower audio spike, the cinematography for the attic jumpscare and then repeating that jumpscare in the end shot. They even mirror imaged it to have it fit with the box in the background. You know this was added last minute by some overhead exec saying it needed more scares. Should have just ended with a cut to black on that box with the Super 8 reel sound still going. Instead, the moment was cheapened. Thanks, Blumhouse! You've done it again...
