Gday, I recently had a very generous viewer gift arrive of 4 Hemingway kits, Finger plate, rotary broach, Tailstock die holder and Sensitive knurling tool, This video I decided to make the finger plate and I did make a couple of mistakes and didn't stick to then plans 100% but i'm happy with the final product, I really hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching, Cheers

The generosity of our viewers continually blows me away, I just bought an engineer's vice using the small donations that my viewers make. That is a nice little project and to be honest, I have been scratching my head just lately trying to think of a project to make, just found one 😁, I hope the treatments are going well and not knocking you around too much. 👍

What a very generous subscriber Matty. Those kits are not cheap either. But better yet is that it gives you the incentive to get out into your workshop after your treatments without the worry of thinking of another project, sourcing materials and hardware, so that you can get straight on with the job. A generous and bloody good idea for your recovery Matty. So thank you whoever you are, because you will give us plenty of the usual entertainment from Matty's workshop! Ps I wish I'd have thought of that. Now I've watched the build mate you've made a nice job of that. Pity about the mistake, but as we all say, " Shit happens " lol. Good luck with your appointment this arvo, cheers from the UK Sam

Nice work Matty, and the finger plate is a nice project that can be made from scrap on hand as well. I would just make a threaded stud for the hole from brass, lock site or solder and file it flush. Clickspring has a vid on his design. for anyone interested. Enjoyed the vid, cheers mate!

Whoever you are, generous viewer, your contributions are most welcome... We all enjoy this channel`s content, and you just tossed oil over a fire... How nice of you, especially moving towards winter, it will be nice to have a few projects coming during these months of cold and cruel misery... Also, i dont know why the company insists on censoring of the plans in a way... Any machinist upon seeing the thing being made will be able to replicate the design... Sure, some details might change, but these arent complex systems that would present much hardship being replicated by sight... One is a tube with a taper on the end and a few bits, the other is a plate with some groves and finger clamps, one is a two finger clamp that has slots in the end to hold the knurling wheels... I mean, its literally apprentice grade projects in a way... Its not like you are making an automatic boring head with cross-feed/facing-feed... That would be harder to just assume the dimensions on, but these... Not so much...
@MattysWorkshop
@MattysWorkshop Жыл бұрын
Gday, the generosity and support we have received is very humbling, i not sure why they don’t like the plans shown on camera but I’ll respect the wishes, I still haven’t forgotten about the boring and facing head, im looking for the correct tap I need which isn’t easy to find, thanks for watching, cheers

@@MattysWorkshop Ayy, anytime, seeing another whacky machinist brother is always a pleasure... How would i not be watching... Also, a thought... That vise stop could impart brinelling onto the fixed jaw... The hardened ball bearing with its point contact is just the worst type of pressure pad for important surfaces like vise jaws and precision plates... I would much rather see a bronze or brass pad or tip atop the screw... A ball is an implement of destruction here, even with gentlest pressures... First of, the vise jaw is likely hard itself, and a ball point contact with a hard surface cant really be a decent friction retention system either... Kinda like a carbide endmill in a drill chuck... Just waiting to slip at the first opportunity, unlike a soft wide pad(2mm contact is wide compared to a ball point)... The stop is lovely, but the locking mechanism is a bit unfortunate according to what i have learned over last decade and a half... Its why people grind down ball bearings so they can put the flat against the moving jaw and use the ball end to clamp down on the unevenly shaped part... You can use a plain ball bearing, but it will damage both the part and the jaw... Since the part is being worked, the half-ball is only needed until you get a flat reference surface against the jaw... You know the trick im talking about... Same idea as a copper wire, but its a ball bearing...

Hi Matty, great to see you in the workshop, enjoying a build and customising the kit to suit yourself, I wouldn't have done the concave filing either cos I'm sure I've some spherical washers in the bottom of a toolbox somewhere as they are used for the injector clamps for an old Citroen van I used to have. You have inspired me for a little project of my own now as I'm sure I can find enough in my scrap bin to make one of those up. best wishes from the UK, Paul

Good to see you back on your machines, Matty. Thoughtful gifts. Not always possible, but slitting saws can also make narrow slots. Also, a radius on the central nut paired with a matching female radius in the clamp would do the same as the filed radius. Many ways … Rooting for you!

Nice work Matty. As far following the plans exactly goes, I'd say 90% or more of the kit builders I see on here ether modify the kit or leave details out to suit their needs. For that "extra" threaded hole I'd loc-tite a screw or bolt in the hole, cut it off flush and then run a fly cutter over the top surface to blend it in and one ooops gone!

Nice work Matty, Don't worry about the 'mistake' tapped hole, I reckon a few more 1/4 - 32 holes might be handy to give more options for positioning the finger clamp. You could also drill out the 'mistake' 1/4 -28 hole (UNF), plug it somehow and re-drill and tap it 1/4-32 as well. I made a 'clickspring' inspired plate a while back and am about to drill a few more tapped holes for the clamp post to give more clamping options - I'll send a photo when I've finished it.

Wow ! That will keep you busy for a time mate. Those Hemingway kits are not cheap mate. I know you got them as a gift but I wonder if they will just sell the drawings only and you buy the raw material from places you know locally

Yeah 3mm (and smaller) mills arent always happy with aluminium let alone steel. One should always have and extra 1 of whatever you have on hand. Even if it made me broke at some stage to have so much mills😂 oh well 1 recovers from that soon or eventually. I learnt also very quick to be patient with those sizes, doesnt pay to loose the concentration and send the poor mill to oblivion😅 peck away at the job one pass at a time, enough air and lube does it.but yeah we all do mess up good sometimes part of learning😅
