I recently saw “Bones and All” and immediately bought the book because I wanted to pretend I was into it before it got cool. Shamelessness aside, the book is really really good. The actors were casted really well so I don’t mind that I picture them by default as I read. Again, lovely review!!

Ooo! I watched that film last week. I heard the novel was YA, which confused me considering how ultra violent the film is.

Have you read Wilkie Collins' Woman in White? I had a blast reading that after Fingersmith

Like you I saw the film first and thought it was great and like you when I spotted the name of the book I resolved to read it. But unlike you I got the book quite soon afterwards and that proved to be a mistake on my part. Part 1 of the book was so like the film that there was little in it to surprise me and I felt disappointed. Part 2 was totally different from the film which increased my enjoyment in reading but again like you I did think that the story dragged a bit. Still I got a major surprise with the revelations that occurred towards the end. For this reason I increased my rating to 4 stars. I will have to lend it to a friend who has not seen the film to see what they think of it. But you were the wise one to wait several years before reading the book.

I thought Fingersmith was excellent. It had a complex story and the characters were so well done. It was like reading a Dickens novel but the prose was easier to read. Some of the characters were just as dastardly and dark. I did not notice a pacing problem. The opposite really. I wanted more.

Right, I want to read Fingersmith so I've stopped watching your review. I really like Sarah Water's writing and her ability to tune in to different eras. I've read two books (can't remember the titles, i'm afraid) by her and loved the atmosphere she created in both

I watched the Handmaiden first too, then read Woman In White, then read Fingersmith. I totally agree with you about the pacing. I actually liked the twists better in the movie too.
