Hello ASL Heroes!!! Hey, I could really use your help. If you’ve enjoyed having access to an expert in ASL you can help me continue my work for you. A small monthly donation from you would instantly make a big difference here at the studio because teachers don’t earn much and I could use some help paying for server and domain hosting for Lifeprint.com. Right now you can help out a humble (not to mention kind, caring, generous, compassionate, helpful, friendly, fair, and hard-working) ASL teacher -- just go here and a few clicks later you too will be a true “ASL Hero!” www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=64QMBRBXQSV6G Thanks! - Dr. Bill p.s. Want to have your very own USB drive with four semesters worth of ASL instruction (that’s the equivalent of two years of colleges classes) for just $79.95? See "SuperUSB" in the ASLUniversity bookstore at: lifeprint.com/bookstore/bookstore.htm Take care and love to you all. :)

Wow this was intimidating. I only started studying 1 year ago and I thought I was good at reading finger spelling, but man do I have to practice a lot more. I understood maybe less tben 10% of this on the 1st try. At least it's always fun to sign, so it doesn't feel like work.

Thank you so much for these videos!! Does the abbreviation "abt." have different connotation than the "about" sign, or are they the same? I'm having trouble distinguishing between when people use the lexicalized fingerspelling (like car vs the sign "car") and when they use the sign. Are there specific situations where one is more appropriate?
@sign-language
@sign-language 4 жыл бұрын
The "abt"abbreviation tends to mean "regarding" but seems rather bound to the "TALK" sign as in "what are you talking about?" The "abt" abbreviation would not be a good choice for the concept of "approximate." For the concept of approximate use the APPROXIMATE / around / about sign. If you mean "about" as in "regarding" and you are not signing "talk about" then a good choice is either the two handed ABOUT sign or perhaps the sign TOPIC/quote/title would fit (depending on context).

@@sign-language That makes sense, thank you so much!! For other lexicalizations like #car or #busy, does using the fingerspelling add any emphasis compared to the signs? Or are they considered less formal? I know that sometimes the signs and fingerspellings mean different things depending on the situation (like bed and flower bed) or the spelling is used when you're talking single-handedly, but other than that I've seen them used pretty interchangeably in my experience. Are there other general distinctions?

Those are great questions that would be good to ask the Lifeprint-ASLU Facebook group. Sure, I could answer them here but I'm short on time and need to triage my online time. I recommend you join that group if you have not yet done so. To get approved you have to answer a couple of easy questions and read the rules. See: facebook.com/groups/Lifeprint.ASLU/ If you ask your questions to that group and don't get some decent answers within 36 hours feel free to tag me from within the group.

Having an alphabetical list makes the words more 'guessable'. I suppose this approximates the context you'd normally see with fingerspelling when in a conversation. But I found myself wishing the vocabulary list was in random order.
