I've always loved language and how fascinating it is so for long I've had my mind set on linguistics. Though as I'm actually starting just the basics in college I've been having my doubts if it would be worth it in the means of my career especially because of automation. Though for some reason I never even thought about the fact even linguists still have a spot in those careers. Thanks for the video!

(can't blame them though haha) anyway, this academic year, we'll dive into the linguistics proper of a language so am gonna marathon your videos LOL =)) am sooo happy to see a Linguist KZbinr!!!

We have this in common! I started learning Spanish in 8th grade,but I student by myself, using "Spanish for dummies", before I had taken a class for it. I ended up taking Spanish in tenth grade and I had taken 2 years. I didn't stick with it. I picked it up again about three years ago but stopped. I'm now learning Chinese and Korean. I had a talk with a few people and through them I had realized that I have always had a passion for learning languages. The revelation had brought me to tears, actually. So, here I am taking Social Science and Humanities:TESOL- teaching English as a second language and then I'm going to transfer to another College to major in Linguistics. I was afraid to take linguistics head on, because I've been out of school for so long, that I felt intimidated. It took me 4 weeks just to get back in the groove of studying.

There are some others that have TESOL/SLA AL/SLA. Thanks for sharing your experience. Last year I taught at a private school and despite Bing a nightmare, I still want to pursue that Linguistics path. I'd probably get into a Higher Education I don't know yet.

Yeah I’ve been meaning to study a textbook for students of English as a foreign language. I actually taught English in japan briefly and was kind of winging it using my personal experience studying foreign languages but it’s not the same. You really need a good memorized response for stuff like anybody vs somebody. What came up often for Japanese speakers is articles. When to use the, a, or omit it. They don’t know and I think a is easier to say and just makes mire sense to them. They use it more than the other two options.

It would have given more value to the video as I'm sure you had them in your back pocket. Perhaps they're in other videos of yours? Still a great video! Thank you so much and best wishes for your journey! 🙂🙂🙂

Odd question: in order to persue linguistics, would you say you need to be super proficient in English? I am a native English speaker but I've always had a problem with such a limited vocabulary (it's one of my biggest insecurities). Linguistics interests me but I'm scared you need to be super smart to even understand it..
@NJ-vw7tf3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately yes you do need to be quite proficient in English if you want to do well. I recommend just reading, read read read even if you find it difficult just keep going and listen to speeches online or podcast BUT READ!!

@@GXrevolution96 the best way to acquire new vocabulary is by reading books and watching television (you should read and watch something which is not general like the scientific section of a newspaper or a documentary which is about the anatomy of idk...dolphins (?). In my case, I'm a native Italian speaker and English is becoming my second language. I got a few months ago my B2 First certificate (it is a European thing that is valid in the entirety of the European Union). Rn i wanna get to the C1 level (to do so i read for 30 minutes the NYT)

hi, do you have any book recommendations or anything to teach yourself linguistics? Something bit more than just the basics. I am going to start a master's degree in applied linguistics this year, i love linguistics but i am afraid i might be missing some knowledge. I studied to be an english teacher and i had some linguistics courses, but i still want to study a bit more before starting my classes so i'm certain i'm not so behind compared to people who studied linguistics as undergraduates

Hey mate, my name is Tom, I’m 23 and I’m starting university majoring in languages and linguistics in Australia. I have put 4 years into Greek so I can be proficient but somehow I’m a little nervous since my knowledge for linguistics is a little small. Do you think it’s worth it if you want to expand your knowledge with languages? I think most people around me seem to not understand why I chose this to study thinking that linguistics means that I’m just going to uni to learn languages lol. Anyways, love to hear your feedback :)
@FingtamLanguages3 жыл бұрын
I definitely don't think a degree in linguistics is worth it just for the sake of expanding your knowledge of languages (unless you're independently wealthy, in which case follow your heart 😅). Do you have a career path in mind that makes you want to get a degree in linguistics?
