Finish Repair-Music Man

Thanks for joining me for more guitar restoration videos! John Petrucci Majesty by Music Man came in with some cracks in her poly / catalyzed finish. We'll glue her, boost her, accelerate her, wet sand and polisher her.

Scott is, from a psychological standpoint, putting everyone on notice that claim HHG is no longer needed, with modern glues, that HHG is indeed not just relevant, but even essential today, even on modern guitars. Then, symbolically and existentially, he punctuates that crack repair with this dazzling finish touch up. Nobody at this point need argue. No can do.

I’ve said it more than once, Scotty, but you are an absolute master at refinishing / touching up guitars. You’re also fearless when it comes to diving into one if these projects. I honestly get an anxious feeling when you start sanding away at one of these gloss finish jobs. Really impressive.

A+ job and great tips. On the nut compensation after doing the steps you mention, if the open string ends up being flat, which way do you ‘move’ the nut?

Nice job. I might have checked to see if the nut is secure in its slot. if the glue was not sufficient etc or it snapped from cold weather or a bump (or both) that moving nut could be an issue down the road. More than likely though it’s just the difference between steel and wood movement.

Yeah I’ve had to replace a volume pot on one of these. Not fun. I even had to make a tool for that particular job. It’s also funny to see the difference in electronics between a EBMM Majesty and a Sterling Majesty.

I need to refinish a part of my JP guitar because it chipped and the finish came off completely. Do you think stewmac wipe-on poly would work? what product did you use for the finish? Thank you!!

Yes, but it has flexibility to it. It comes in different viscosities
