All of the raccoons, rabbits, blacktail deer, and even a stray whitetail fawn, along with my semi-tame jays and crows all send their best. Hummingbirds, too I should add.

Looks like you do incredibly well detailed work. I have to ask why you're not using glass syringes for your hot hyde glue. Brushes and spatulas can work great but I've had pretty good luck using a glass syringe and about a 12 gauge needle. To get glue into place and allow it to flow from the center out. you could pre-warm the glass syringe to prevent it from getting clogged

I always would brush on chemical stripper and then slide the body into a hefty bag and seal it. Let it sit over night and the finish would melt right down and scrape off a lot easier! Love that guitar!! TV yellow is absolutely the color to do it!!!

Hey Scott, a comment and a question. First, great vid as always. Second, I see you use both the StringTech work station and the Proper's. If you had to choose, which one would you recommend? Thanks

Thanks! I use the Tech Deck 100% every job. Then Total Vise #7 before Proper’s WS for what I do. Proper’s WS is the best for fretwork though.

I have a question. Fish glue. How long do you have to work with it? Hide glue feels like 20-40 seconds work time so hence, I ask. Thoughts?
@harpethguitar3 күн бұрын
10-15 minutes with fish I’d say. I like to extend the open time of fish glue and HHG by warming both parts with a hairdryer 😊

Great guitar. Back in the 90s, I bought a brand new Martin D-15 for $550. Yep, solid wood front, back and sides on a Martin for $500 and change. I sold it about 10 or 12 years ago for the same price! Yep, a used but still great all solid wood used Martin for $500 and change. Damn, I wish I still had that thing.

My guess is Paduk is also a resonant wood but comes closer to matching the color.

Another great restoration, and thanks for all the magnet tips! From an absolute nonmusician, when you measure the action in 64ths, are you measuring to the center of the strings or the bottom of the string?
@patrickniedermeyer21125 күн бұрын
Bottom. It's a clearance measurement.

Thats an AliExpress Casino copy, or a AliExpress kit someone put together, which explains putty, Epiphone China probably wouldn't pass Gibson inspection. If you see the tenon on the Rickenbacker 12 string copies you will really get a laugh, they barely stick the necks in the bodies

Did you consider replacing the Formica piece altogether, and instead using genuine wood veneer, with Martin decal applied? If this Martin belonged to me, I wouldn’t want Formica anywhere near it 😅

I was surprised Scott when you said you were a wood salesman in the past. Your skill level is at a level that I would have thought you have done this for your entire career. It looks like you started your tube presence about 5 years ago... Did you ever share your journey to this skill level?

Thanks so much. I haven’t shared that but in short I’ve been tinkering with guitars since the early 80’s, playing in bands, working a regular job. Then when I turned 50 I started Harpeth Guitar to work on guitars full time.

Question (and pardon my lack of knowing): Is there a reason you didm't use a powered buffer for the final finish? Would that have made it easier, or is that a no-no?

I bought recently the same exact guitar, but in the lefthanded version. I didn't identify a need for a fret polishing job, at first. After watching this vid i checked and perhaps the frets may benefit of a polishing job but the guitar is perfectly playable as is. It's my first stainless fret guitar, perhaps she would be even better with a thorough polish.. I bought mine new in Europe in my local music shop (in France as i'm french, but the guitar came from Germany for disponibility reason.. the joy of being a lefthand guitar player....). Perhaps some guitars or batch are better inspected than others.

You are THE MAN when it comes to anything guitar finish related. I keep saying this, but Scottie, I watch tons of guitar repair and build videos and no one, not even close, does the level of quality you put into every finish job. You have so many different potions and compounds, plus every grit of sandpaper/polishing pad, known to man. Really impressive work and something to be proud of. Great job!

Why do you choose carbon fiber instead of routing out space for some wood splines? I mean wood exapands and carbon fiber does not doesn't this create problems down the line?

Man you have to try out Total Boats “ halcyon “ water based poly. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever used in the water based poly/ lacquer realm since the beginning of the ‘90’s when I worked in the development of these finishes. Poly shield by Hydrocoat / Hood Finishing products, was the best thing going. Even Boeing aircraft were using it. I worked right along beside Michael Dresdner and we had amazing success with coming up with state of the art finishes that exceeded any other product out there. Total Boat water based products are absolutely above anything else available at this time.

Wouldn't it be better just to sand off the finish and respraying it after the refret? I'm trying to do that with my 90s Strat copy by some unknown polish builder. It's called Jim Harley but despite the cheap price and the body being of MDF boards it has a really tight neck pocket and is overall a really good guitar. Only thing problem I have is that the neck is very whippy and I wondered if carbon fiber rod inlays would be a good idea. I just don't know how much damage it will do if I remove the fretboard.

What was that thing you called a "Scrub Pad" used with the wet/dry with the fret shield? Where might I find that? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks
@harpethguitar11 күн бұрын
“Scrub Bock” stringTech Work Stations sells them as part of a fretting kit, but anyone can make one out of 5/4 bullnose, decking or stair tread material cut to about 2-1/2 to 3” square. with vinyl foam fabric wrapped around it /stapled to it
@BluesDoctor11 күн бұрын
@@harpethguitar OK, I am an "Old" hardcore engineer. Where do I find vinyl foam fabric? Technically the foam density comes to mind and its thickness needs to be some number 'X' thicker than the height of the fret. I have a Taylor 855ce with a couple of silver dollar size bubbles on the side an back of the Rosewood; Thank-you, thank-you soooo much for this finish trick. The frets were leveled to a flat top and never crowned so I am eager to give this a try. The saddle has been filed to a sliver so likely a neck reset is in the cards before I am done getting this beauty back to playable condition. Thanks again. You have a 70 year old dedicated follower now.

That's great. One of these guitars was sold by Lawman Guitars and it had a floating bridge. It was featured in the 1940 Sears catalogue. Sears sold Harmony to its management in early 1941.
