This could've been a ten-part series on HGTV. Just hour-long episodes of you narrating what you're doing and building this mantel. No manufactured drama, like a phone call from a supplier about a shortage right before a commercial break that is easily resolved after the break. The only thing extra I'd like to see is more of your dog we see in some of these videos.

Richard, you've entered into a dangerous territory........improving a house. I'm reminded of a story about James Whistler's Peacock Room (the same Whistler that painted "Whistler's Mother). Whistler was hired to create an Asian themed room for a wealthy man in order to showcase the man's blue and white porcelain collection. He started painting a Peacock mural around the room, but as time when by he got better and better at depicting scenes, and the mural got more and more intricate and beautiful and by the time he got all the way around the room and back to where he started he had improved the mural so much he had to keep going. So he went around the entire room again touching things up and repainting things just to try and balance it all out and make it look cohesive. If you're not careful, in twenty years as you work your way around the house you might find yourself standing in the middle of the Palace of Versailles. :)

I’ve been contemplating starting my own trim/millwork biz for a couple years and your channel is super inspiring to me. I could only dream of getting the jobs to do the work you’re doing. Everyone wants the cheap nowadays and few customers in my area appreciate high level finish work. Thanks for years of great content brother. I wish you and yours the best!

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you how far you’ve come since I first started watching your channel. I specifically want to tell you how much I appreciate your attention to detail and not just with the actual finished product but the vocabulary you’re now using to describe the work is FUNDAMENTAL. Then to top it all off, you not only are using the right language but you clearly understand why something is. In this day and age of instant gratification, I feel like its easy for us as trade men and women to succumb to apathy and become detached from the work-almost like confusing a restaurant menu for the actual food. Anyways, I just wanted you to know that I genuinely appreciate your understanding and willingness to learn. Love your show- a legend in the making.

It's nice to see the joy on your face. In my Victorian house, all the pretty stuff had been torn out, I put it all back in, the base boards were 11 inches high, I hand carved the corner blocks for the casing trim, I loved every minute of it.

Rich, that is looking bad ass! Back in my young days as you are now I use to build queen furniture before I left to work for corporate America and there is nothing more pleasing than adding the lip stick and mascara to a project. I live in a 200 year old home that just about every piece of Wainscoting and crown molding and columns was added by me. The same smile I see in your face is the smile I had every time I accomplished my next project in the house. Keep doing what makes you and your wife happy with your house it better than 80% of the cookie cutters houses in the market with no character. 😊

The base ingredient of CA glue activator is acetone. That is why it dissolves the primer on the moldings. Acetone is just a carrying agent for the activator.

CA glue activator is basically just acetone. I still by the spray activator though because its well, sprayable!
@philipbohi983 Жыл бұрын
I made the mistake of storing the CA and little pump sprayer of activator that I got from Richard together, and it made a bit of a mess as the activator evaporated (and bonded with the monomers in the glue). Now I just keep them a few feet apart. The spray is great for larger surfaces, and I keep a pump for the precision repairs when I apply with a q-tip (and the glue with a toothpick)…and I use that stuff to repair dang near everything unless I have to step up to JB Weld!!😂

I'd rather not have plinth blocks on door trim, but it's going to look great on this piece because it'll be architecturally correct. After paint, and viewing the entire work, we will see that (plinth or no plinth) it's gonna look great

I’ve started adding plinth blocks around our house because my wife drives the vacuum like it’s the Killdozer. Looking at door casings, you would think we walk around in steel toe boots angrily kicking them.😂 The blocks are really easy to replace in seconds (just precut and paint a bunch of them).
