I put a TV above the mantle too when I had kids BUT…putting aesthetics and customs aside, there are two issues I found. First looking up and watching TV will give you a neck ache. Second, the heat from the fireplace rises and makes the TV run so much hotter, even with a sealed fireplace. The solution to the neck issue is reclining chairs (or the excuse to buy them).

This mantle is turning out to be quite a distinctive feature. I really like your choice of the pencil molding on the front corner. It adds a nice touch others seldom think to use.
@woodyourather7835

I also like the pencil molding for the corner, it will be interesting to see what transition you do for the baseboard. Also, since you used solid wood for the panels, they will expand when summer comes in Texas, so that tight fit may crack your frame joints, or bow the panel itself. I suggest leaving expansion room just like the doors you made.

beautiful job! an design! just my simple man opinion, you should rout out the family initial on the middle panels on both sided of fire place! or you business name, to keep the legend going for grandchildren and so on...

I can't wait to see it finished. I'm currently doing a full kitchen remodel and today I did some trim above the upper cabinets that turned out looking so good that it made me want to keep working through the night. So I know what you mean when you say how seeing something come together motivates you to want to keep going.

Beautiful mate, I like the way you explained that it's not a TV room, but the frame TV you have ordered will be an art form, that's the beauty of Samsung Smart tv's, you can have changeable HD art. So many people have their TV's hung high on the wall to watch TV, it's such an uncomfortable viewing position.

I have been trying to figure out how I can cover one of those cast stone fireplaces that were so popular 20 years ago. Watching your videos makes me think I’m in a master class of trim carpentry. The problem I see here is that it will be like proverbial polishing one shoe. The fireplace/mantle will be so spectacular that the rest of the room will look like it lacks ornamentation so you will have deck it out with goodies. But then that room will be out of balanced with the other rooms so you will start decking them all out but half way through (i.e. in 4 years) your wife will decide she wants a different house….

Hi Richard. Love your videos. Not sure about the corners though. Just curious on why you didn’t just overlap the stile on fireplace wall with the stile on the perpendicular wall? Also, since you’re painting everything, why not just make everything from mdf? It’s more dimensionally stable and less expensive than Spanish cedar.

I cringed a bit when you friction fitted that panel in so tight. Especially since you've added pencil molding, why not give it a chance to move somewhat and prevent cracking? And just FYI, my daughter has gone through 3 of those frame looking Samsung TVs, they just keep failing. (Although Best Buy has been good in replacing them.). I advise you to register the TV and keep the receipt. I'm excited to see how you treat the corners, this will be a new one for me! Looks amazing, I really enjoyed this video, thank you!
