Great door. Love white oak. You should put the finish on the panels before you assemble. When the panel contracts it will show the unfinished part. If the panel are already at it's largest size, then no problem.

With the bead you won't see that
@antonvink
@antonvink Жыл бұрын
@@andrewkennedy9704 Yes you would, if he would have finished under the bead before he put it on you wouldnt. But if you finish it now and the wood panel contracts you see a small line on both sides from under the beads.

Here's a tip never stop moving your material when routing with the table learn to switch hands to keep going till you are through. If you stop there's always a burn or dimple. If you had a shaper the speed is slower and won't burn also. Good luck.

It's good to put painter's tape under the surface of the bar clamps to prevent the bars from marking up the wood. I love the doors, btw.

This project got you my sub. Simply awesome. I waited from the beginning before commenting. As uncommon it is to see white oak used, it's simply gorgeous. I have often wondered why it is not used over the prevailing red oak. I've seen some furniture of white, but not much else. FWIW, it is very weather resistant, and fairly impervious to rot and bugs. I am planning to make my basement bilco doors from rough cut white oak, lathered in oil. I hate the prefab metal doors for exterior basement access. I'm glad to be a new sub here.

Beautiful job Richard. At $500+/pop you're going to have some money tied up to do the entire house though. You could save dollars and hardwood by veneering your rails and stiles- mill out of MDF and then laminate with white oak. Doesn't have to be paper-thin, I'm talking about 1/8" or even thicker - the material will go 4x farther (one full 4/4 piece will make at least 4.maybe 5, 1/8" veneers after subtracting for your bandsaw kerf and surfacing. It's a bit of extra work but you have all the machinery to do it - laminate the edges first . If you plan it right the edge seams will be nearly invisible and the structure will be even more stable. Many commercially available "solid hardwood" doors are built this way. They leave the strike side and the bottom veneer a little thicker (3/8-1/2" typ.) so the door can be fitted to the opening. The only downside is you have to get the sizing within that 1/4" or so right out of the gate. Everything else in milling and assembly is the same. RE: Moulding - I would have glued the beads (only to the rails/stiles.. not the panels) and I do agree with the comment that it would probably be better to put at least a scratch coat of finish (assuming you know what you're using - that's usually the hang-up) on the panels - at least the panel edges, before assembly. If you can't ...as long as the wood is dry to 8% or less, and the house is climate-controlled, you won't get much movement but it could show a hairline seasonally I suppose. One more tip - try not to push-stick on the waste side of your blade -it's not safe, and you're apt to ruin the last inch or two of your cut. I've always made custom push-sticks for narrow stock that work, but a cpl years ago I bit the bullet and bought a couple of the fully tricked-out Micro-jig Grrippers (spelling). Those things really are a game changer for narrow moulding - so much more control. But you do pretty much do need two of them, and they take some practice. But I don't feel safe without them now. Take care - enjoy your channel.

What an absolutely beautiful door! The only concern I would have is having such a brutally heavy door with little kids. When they are chasing each other and one runs into a room and slams the door shut, if someone has a hand anywhere near where the door closes, it will chop fingers right off. I remember as kids, my brother chased me into my bedroom and when I slammed the door shut, he screamed bloody murder. It broke three of his fingers, and those were just solid core 6 panel doors, probably half the weight of that door. Just a cautionary tale, but something you might want to consider with little kids around.
