Looks Great Richard! As a hardwood floor contractor I usually apply oil based polyurethane to my hardwood floors for a traditional look. When the customer wants a Water based finish I do use the Loba Line of finishes as you did. For a 1 part finish I use Loba EasyFinish, for a 2 component finish I use Loba 2K Duo. However both of those finishes require a sealer coat first of Loba EasyPrime. The Loba Life is a 1 part finish with no need to use a primer coat, very DIY friendly. Best advice when using a water based finish, Never watch it dry! It will drive you crazy the way it looks! Apply it and walk away, when it's dry it will look great!

Awesome. Looks great. I did a kitchen island in beech with a hard wax oil floor finish. Very forgiving, great performance. I wanted it a little darker, so put another coat on with a darker oil from the manufacturer to tint it a little. Had never thought of it for a door, so thanks!

When applying your finish, use your brush on the 3 dimensional areas only. For the long flat pieces, use a mini roller. The roller I use has about a 1" diameter by 6" wide replaceable nap roller. They also make foam roller sleeves that work great too. You can apply the finish with the grain and then stop when the grain meets an opposing grain direction. Your finish will look sprayed on.
@thezfunk Жыл бұрын
I tried that but I seem to get a better finish when I rolled it and then back brushed it. It could be the surface coating I am using.

I use floor finishes for almost everything. I just thin for my application method and use a variety of different thinners to modify the dry time to my needs. It is also cheap, for an oil based finish I can get a gallon of Bona woodline for $45, hard to beat that.

We bought a couple solid wood doors for two sleep outs I built and we were glad when we picked just a clear coat instead of a stain it kept the natural colour of the wood just like you did, nice job. The doors and windows you build are absolutely awesome beautifully constructed mate by the way have you finished the laundry window, couldn't quite see lol. Just wondering also but have you ever tried constructing a door or window using tools lets say from the 1800's that would be interesting to see. I think that would test your skills which no doubt are very high. But I see where the price for those other doors come from people don't see the work involved in making custom work but you definitely have the skill to build them also having the right tools for the work involved helps the right router bits etc so looking forward to seeing those.

When finishing wood its better to use a foam brush since it does not leave any brush strokes. I would recommend Bona hardwood finishing products since they are a water based urethane product. Oil based urethane products add a yellow tint to the wood because the oil. Bona also offers a 2K wood finishing clear coat Bona Traffic HD which provides a more durable coating for flooring or furniture counter tops.

I’ve been using General Finish Conversion Varnish on alot of my projects and love it. I had a handrail project come up where the customer requested I use the same finish as the hardwood floors they just had installed. So I talked to their flooring trans and got what they used which was a 2 part Bona Traffic product. I SWEAR it’s the same stuff. Mix ratio was basically the same. Milky white color was the same. Even the unique smell was the same. I’m pretty sure they are the same. Just good for thought in the future. I don’t think you made a wrong decision using floor finish for your doors.

Oak is a tricky wood to finish, the diners run from face to back like a bunch of straws, allowing the finish to pass through, taking multiple coats to make a smooth finish. You see this by the light and dark patches on the surface (seen when eyed from an angle. We would fill the oak first with filler, sand, then finish to eliminate this. Just a tip

We’ve been using a lot of Rubio over the last year. Probably more than £1000 or $1000 worth. I know that a little goes a long way but not that long. There is a product called Heidelberg. Another wax oil and which, according to professional users, also goes a long way - and it’s much cheaper per litre. Now, I haven’t tried it as yet because we wanted no problems with continuity of colour (smoked oak) between all the various elements. Now, we are moving onto a different part of the house and a slight colour difference would never be noted. So, I’m going to try this Heidelberg. Whether or not, it works out cheaper per square metre is something I don’t know yet. If anyone else has used this product, it would be excellent to share experiences.

Could this finish work over a painted finish on a door? Would really appreciate a tough finish on my doors. (Wheelchair in the house)
@bighands69 Жыл бұрын
Yes finishes can be put on painted surfaces to give them a sheen or shine. If you have not yet had the door pained you could just go with oil finish on wood. It can always be easily touched up when damaged or even stripped.
