As a past Architectural Designer, I would go with the Boss and center the fireplace on the seating area. The area where the single door is on the right is dead space (or hall area). We would design living spaces like that all the time. As much as you want to center it on the whole wall... you only see the wall area when you walk into the room from the front and not the single door. Hate to say it... The Boss Is RIGHT! lol good luck, the house is looking great.

Ive been in the Design Build business for 25 years. With your ceiling height and layout, i would ditch the french doors on that wall and replace the window on the side with one. Center the fireplace as the misses suggested, 8-10 ft tall built-ins on either side that tie into the mantel of your choice, over mantel above with space for your TV, windows above built-ins on either side of over mantle. Center coffered ceiling from that.

I have been using festool for about the last 8 years. I am a painter at a hospital and when I have to do drywall repair they're sander is incredible and also their dust extractor. Our infectious control nurse gave me a thumbs up on a dust extraction. I am able to use it in sensitive areas where they can have no dust. They're HEPAA filter is incredible
@timforgot

I bought the drywall sander (the expensive one, not the old one) and the Wen I had has the same extraction performance with mesh discs. I also have the Makita with the roller wheels (the older one with the same model number, not the round one) and it's worse than both re extraction, but handy for corners. Also, the Fein Turbo 1 is ~$220 if you get coupons on Zoro and with a separator, which you'll need anyway unless your kink is paying for consumables), is every bit as good as any Festool DE.

The prob with the double French doors is then you need a walkway which will really eat up the floor space. I don’t think you would be able to put a sectional in the remaining space.

I think the fireplace centered in the smaller area to the left and one french door to the right is better. It will keep the seating arrangement out of the walkway and will look better visually in my opinion.

Hi Richard and Ashley, I personally would centre the fire place and put windows either side . turn the glass windows you have into the french doors that way you can maximise the the whole layout in the room as you would have a focal point of the fire as the main and the garden as a secondary. just my 2pence worth from and interior design point of view hope this helps . All the best and stay safe .
@ClassicNathan
@ClassicNathan Жыл бұрын
Man, that's a hard decision to make. But I definitely think for your room, it's the right call. The live-ability of the room is going to improve greatly. Honestly, unless you really love the fireplace, you should consider removing it completely. With the french door, the window, the stairs, and the TV...you have enough focal points and the fireplace just adds more. I'm in the same boat with a fireplace, window, 3 entrance/exits, and the TV. I just haven't pulled the trigger on removing the fireplace. We love the mantle for decorations and home-e-ness, but in 18 years we only used the fireplace 3 or 4 times.

To help decide how to place the fireplace/tv, place your existing furniture in the room the way you would place the new sectional. With the furniture in place, the location of the fireplace should become shelf evident. You are lucky in that u can play around with different layouts in the actual room. Great channel. Great content. I also agree with another comment to forget Frnch doors and place windows higher on the wall.

Richard, you got the right idea, cutting them with the track saw. That's exactly how it's done. Great videos. I have owned a TS55 and RO90 for 3 years. Best money spent. The quality of the Festool sanding discs is excellent also. Be sure to register the warranty, I have never had to use mine but from what I hear the after sales service is not bad also(from Festool). The one issue I found with the RO90 is that the dust extraction hose does get in the way a bit especially on small projects, but it works VERRY well. With the TS range are very easy to change blades and the systainer has nice slots for the spare blades. I found that swapping blades between rip and cross cut spares the motor.

I vote for French doors on the right side and a sort of faux French door (double 7 foot tall windows) on the left. That way you keep uniformity but you don't have to keep the left side open to be used as a door it would help the seating and still give you a uniform layout. Build up the moldings and tie the windows and doors together across the entire wall going over the fireplace and tieing in as well. You're building the doors and windows you can make it whatever you want.

My vote goes to centering the fireplace referencing the seating area as the Boss said (as if you really thought you had any say in the matter Ha LOL!) and not having ANY windows or doors on that wall, but rather blowing out all the windows on the left-hand side wall and putting in either a sliding French glass door ... Or better yet a big-ass Cali-style bifold glass door/wall and build out a patio on that side of the house to seamlessly extend the living room outside to the infinity pool and outdoor kitchen!!! :) !!! .

Richard, tossing in my 2 cents. Figure furniture plan first, foot traffic pathways etc . Maybe an L shaped couch and coffee table centered on the new fireplace which will likely be centered between the single french door and left wall. TV mounted above a Richard's special full leg mantle with quartz slab surround on face of fireplace. Go to your local slab fabricator to see what he has for remnants to help the budget. Being this wall will be the focal point of the room, might consider nickel gap, batt and board or combination of both to breakup the tall wall. If this isn't in the budget, maybe Windsor One might comp you for the exposure? Awesome material. Your false beam idea is great to help lower the ceiling and add more interest. Once the beams are mapped out you can layout your recessed lighting, surround sound speakers and reposition HVAC ducts after you demo the drywall ceiling. Be sure to recess a pocket for the TV mount/plug so TV sits flush on wall.

Maybe windows up high on the wall.

Thanks for all the years of content - love your channel. I also enjoy your wonderful family and great house. A couple of ideas for you to consider - 1) Is the fireplace a "must have"? You are in TX and I lived in Houston for 7 years and we literally never used our fireplace - just made the area too hot. Another thing is that as the wall gets wider (i.e. the final width after you remove the corner), I think you'll find the fireplace you currently have is too small and it will look a off-scale in that wide of a wall. 2) have you considered a nice "built-in" for the wall with some cabinets and shelves? Building the cabinets and shelves would make for some great content too! Good luck, though I don't think you need it. You guys have a great eye for style and taste; love everything you are doing with the house.

I would have to agree with putting the fireplace centered with the exterior wall. Essentially you would only be losing approximately 2ft (dividing the difference im assuming it's 4ft). Aesthetically I think it would be more appealing especially when the beams are installed. Having a focal point like a mantle and fireplace will allow easier planning for beam placement. That wall will always be the focal point of the room. Goood luck and I look forward to the progress.

I recommend the festool cyclone separator for the Makita vac. It will pay itself off from the less dust bags you buy

This was a good decision to remove the corner fireplace....Looks good. Tho remember if you put two French doors on the new flat wall with fireplace in middle and TV on top there will be a lot of light on that wall and may be difficult to view the tv picture during the day.

Always center your focal point from the entrance your guests will use, i.e., the front door.😊

From the perspective of the landing above the room. I suggest getting rid of the fireplace completely. If you want to do a mantel, do it to house the tv, and center it on the wall. That will be the focal point. You can also put doors on the mantel to close it up when you don’t want to see the tv. You can do a whole wall of trim on that wall, maybe with book cases and storage, or just an accent. Put the French doors where you have all the windows, on the left side of the room as you are looking at the mantel from the landing. If you want fire I suggest an out door fire pit that you can see through the windows on the left hand.

Freeing up floor space is always the best. Hard to say with the rest of the room though without actually being there. Feels like it needs some windows.

Two 8’ tall doors on each side is the way to go. Even though technically the room is narrower, with a “hallway” on the right, it will seem much more balanced and actually make the room feel bigger if you treat the outside wall as the room width and center the fireplace on it. Figure out the width of the fireplace first, then go with whatever width door looks best, don’t be afraid to go to 4’ or 4.5’ wide on the doors to get the feel right. The taller and narrower door will help with the proportions of that wall.

I’ve had my 12” flexvolt for a little over 5 years. I’ve only ran it with batteries. Never had a problem. I would buy another one immediately if that one failed. I’ve been building houses and remodeling houses for 23 years. I’ve seen battery tools come a long way .

Build out for the fireplace on the exterior to save space. The high wall is a challenge for the flue. You don't have to go up to a full chimney. It can be a wall termination vent. But not clear how that will look outside, since we don't know what's out there. Are you planning on a patio cover? That might give you a place to stop the flue. Get Brent to sketch something up. Look at electric fireplaces.

It's not a fireplace if it doesn't have a fire. The electrician will probably cost a fortune too to pull a thick wire through walls.

@@weekendwarrior3420 No it IS fake, but so is gas in its way. They run on 110v which will be in the wall anyway. You don't need to run a gas line and an exhaust flue--so WAY less expensive. But if you don't like it, I understand. Some people do.

I have to agree with Ashley on the fireplace placement. The space to the right acts more as a hallway than part of the room.
