I’v owned my own HVAC company for 26 years. The first 15 years I took every job like the person or not and I had a lot stress and problems trying to keep people happy that weren’t happy in their lives, I learned that misery loves company. For the last 10 years I qualify the customer first, if they want cheap I walk away, if they seem pushy I walk away, if they think they know how to do my job better than me I walk away. Just last month I walked away from a job where I had a customer that was putting us through the ringer before we had even started the job and I walked away. Take it from an old dude life is too short and these customers take up your time and energy that should be spent on good customers.

Of course I heard it, but didn’t really listen. After many years of dealing with people.. trust me when I say spend the time!!!! The bigger the project the more time I spend getting to know them. If you have a 3 month project, you are in a relationship with your client for a minimum of 3 months. You better like each other or it will be a very long 3 months! A extra hour or two getting to know if you are a good fit can save you so much heart ache!

One of the best things I learned in sales/estimating residential HVAC installations is when to "fire" the potential customer. I myself am big on doing things right and not cutting corners. I actually like customers who are picky or detailed because once the project is done and they are impressed, they'll be one of your greatest promoters. That said, sometimes there are those people that are just toxic and are set on creating drama. Like you said they are a very small percentage of the people you see, but no matter how sweet the project may seem its best just to walk away. Those people don't like being told no and often cause a fuss initially, but just ignore it and move on. Love your vids! Bingo. Something wrong with that picture. Sounds like that guy was just trying to brag and/or cause problems. How can you have tools like that and not have skills to use them?
@joekuhl35003 жыл бұрын
Thats what everyone from cali says.. and then you work for some and find out that everyone from cali is just like that...

If he had all these tools, and knows how to use them. Why couldn't he do his own work? He probably doesn't even know how to use them.

Anyone that cant get along with your patient , passive and knowledgable personality on a job walk thru has other intentions. Im so glad u went with ur gut feeling cus that, even though i dont know the entire story, seems to me that u seen someone that had other intentions. Also i want to praise u for not letting it sour your mood or vision. Thats why yiyr channel is so popular. Trust that gut feeling, seems to be a great rudder for u. We got your back. Even though u still drive a truck with a goat on the front. U have alot of fans here in Georgia!!

It's very unsettling to deal with someone like that. You have a great attitude and your strategy of just getting on with life is best. Thanks for all the great videos - I have learned a lot from them.

When I watched the video of him showing his shop set up I was wondering why he didn't do the trim work himself. Wood workers usually love doing trim work. He never would have been happy with anyones work but his own. But I've got to say...sweet shop.

you’re freakin’ awesome as a carpenter and a human! I can just about picture this guy and exactly how it went down! He wanted you to blast his shop/house on the tube for his own ego. Keep doin’ what u doin and sooo glad to hear you have learned to ignore the grandmaw’s basement keyboard warriors that have no credentials in life. paul, south Ms fan

Man I remember that video of that guys shop. This was a great video explaining how absolutely insane some potential clients can be, usually the wealthy ones. Love your videos man.

I work as a service plumber in Southern California and let me tell you bro. There are a lot of people like this guy! They are just plain full of themselves.
@danfelack33514 жыл бұрын
Good decision. I’m sure it wouldn’t be to “his standard” regardless of the amount of time and effort you put into it. So he would seek legal action to get a free trim job on your tab.

It’s cool to see that other guys have these tough situations with people who are unrealistic. ( to say the least ). Glad you put this out there. Exactly, once you learn “the internet “ you can “roll on”

You are right on the mark with. "listen to your gut"! I grew up in SoCal woodworking (mostly cabinetmaking) starting in H.S....38 years now with a lot of added skills and the times I did not listen to my gut, I regretted it. The people in CA are used to getting what they want when they want it and if anything goes any other way it's sue happy time. I didn't get sued, rather negotiated rework at my expense. The house had two layers of 5/8 drywall and I didn't catch it until later when trim was shifting. Never saw it before, never since. If I would have listened to my gut, I didn't like the lady's demanding nature, it would have saved me a week's worth of redo/no pay at a really bad time for it to happen! Since that job, I pay close attention to my instincts. I've told probably a dozen people 'no thanks'. Ya, I got nasty comments from them like they were rejected, but I now tell everyone it's in our best interest to be like minded...the results show it!
