That was incredible, for quite some time I have been looking for an effective technique to finish the katagatame without expending all my energy (and neck) over it. Well, finally I found it, tried it today and worked like magic. I'm very impressed with this technique, thank you very much!

This video has helped me more than anything on KZbin. I used think I would never be good at arm triangles because I have long arms. I never seemed to be able to get to get a tight enough squeeze. I watched this video a few months ago, I probably have summited 6-7 different guys with it. The arm triangle is now my go to move when I'm applying Kesa getame, or I'm mounting someone. Thank you so much for all the great information.

Going to give this a shot. The arm-triangle is my favorite and go-to choke, and yes - necks get hurt, even if im careful. Usually the guy panics, flails around and makes it worse. Thanks coach. Outstanding as usual.

You will see 100% choke rate 0% neck issues with this method, I love it! (-: Coach Tom Davey

What usually happens, when push comes to shove, is that i go belly down and at the same time im applying the arm triangle, i also place the close knee under the oppenent's ribs (exactly at the spot where they end). This keeps him from flailing too much, but at the same time contorts his body into a kind of a "C" shape. Its a brutal technique that my old BJJ coach taught me years ago. The technique you demonstrated here reminded me of the technique that Josh Barnett demonstrates when he teaches the scarf hold choke. He loops his arms, similar to what you are doing, only his motion is more circular. I remembered that and imminently thought "how come i didnt think about using that in the arm-triangle?!"

Yes ironically Josh Barnett's BJJ coach is someone myself and a coach of mine have worked under for some time now (Rigan Machado) so this very much is from that same camp! (-: Coach Tom Davey

Nice could you do a video on the different spots you can get a kimura grip from to setup armbars or back takes
@TheGrapplingAcademy
@TheGrapplingAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Wow this would be nearly endless as the kimura can be grabbed from every good position and even every bad one if you are willing to do some acrobatic body work. Then you can use it to take the back, hit the armbar, finish the kimura or even just use the kimura trap tv position. Perhaps Illl make a video on that series! (-: Coach Tom Davey

In wrestling, you need an arm to be able to put your arm around your opponent’s neck. I LOVE to sneak in head and arm chokes in my matches.

Im a short dude i hit this choke alot. Ill will try the beginning part. But the part where you walk away we train to grab your bicep to make your triangle then put your head to the mat. When you walk away from your oppenent keep a knee or foot on their hip of you can since the closer they get they can set up escape. The head to the mat helps on slap days so i dont get hit or accidentally poked in the eyes. Love your videos to bad im thousands of miles ( kilometers 😛) away so i may never train with you guts the vids help expand my jui jitsu. Love it.

Hey man,just a recomendation on a future video for white belts maybe? Maybe after one of the choke videos you should show how people should react if they ''sleep'' someone. Im a white belt,8months training now,and i just recently sleeped a guy for the first time(ezikiel from mount) and it literally took 5,6s for him to be out cold and i kinda panicked since i didnt know what the hell was happening.And some warning beforehand would have been nice haha(our trainer never said what to do when that happens aswell) Maybe a stupid recomendation,but i hope it helps.

Thanks Coach Tom for the important details here. I know you said to make sure there is no daylight between your head and your partner’s head & arm when you go to lift their head. This is exactly when people are escaping from me with their arm. They are trapped when I apply the loving pressure, but no matter how snug I am to them, when I lift the head to execute the “out and around” their arm is reportedly easier to slip out. Is this normal?

Just keep repping. As your hand pushes out before tightening, the lateral pressure must INCREASE top compensate for the fore and aft space of pushing your hands forward, then cinch that baby up. Practice makes perfect. (-: Coach Tom Davey

What’s the defense to this? I would assume if you get thrown, which seems like the most likely scenario for this positioning, how do you defend if you’re the person getting tossed? Quick hip up and fight for back position? At heavier weights, this seems like an easy win if people don’t know how to grapple effectively. Thanks!

What causes the neck pain when doing these chokes? I once experienced this because when I got caught in it right when the guy squeezed my neck popped multiple times like a bug getting crushed.
@TheGrapplingAcademy
@TheGrapplingAcademy 6 жыл бұрын
Simply usually the forearm radius bone in contact with the neck vertebrae. The way I finish it (as opposed to arm triangling) maximises the choke and minimises the neck issues. (-: Coach Tom Davey
