Baylee I've been watching you for eons and I've never commented but today I felt I had to. I run two creative businesses (in Vancouver) and the BEST thing I ever did was hire help. You don't have to hire full time or part time employees and deal with all the things that come with that - there are literally thousands of freelancers out there and virtual assistants who only want to work on contract. Some only want 4 or 5 hours a week, others want 20-30. Any skill set you're looking for, you can find somebody - managing social media, doing admin tasks, stuffing envelopes, going to the post office, printing stickers, helping with con prep. You can hire just for rush periods or you can get somebody to help you a few hours a week. You could free up SO MUCH TIME for yourself and your art AND increase your revenue by letting somebody do those tasks! You have to spend time working ON your business, not just working IN your business!

I clean houses and I've often thought that maybe just a weekly housecleaner would be a big help to you. That would free you up a little more to work and you can still do the things you love. Just a thought, I'm sure you will figure out a good solution for you.

I think you're on the right track with the store idea. Run the limited stock/edition stuff through your store and then everything else can still be done through Red Bubble. Also outsourcing the prints is probably going to be cheaper in the long run than hiring a (human) assistant and will be less work for you to do (you can also print a few yourself if there are any misprints). I love the idea of enamel pins! I collect them, most of mine are from places I've been, but I do have some Sailor Moon ones that I just couldn't resist.

Baylee you have a beautiful mind and can never really "cut back" on things. I've seen you try for years now, but you always get these amazing ideas and have to force yourself not to do since you won't have the time to do so. So think about it in those terms and talk to Jazza for his opinion. He has a set time for work now and spends quality with his family, so he seems perfect to ask advice from.

I used to work for FedEx Office. We offered cutting for projects just like yours. It was a fairly cheap service overall compared to the time needed to cut by hand. It was $1.50 USD per cut (for a stack of 200 sheets), plus a $1.00 "setup" fee. For the stack you had, it would be 4 cuts and could be done while you wait in most cases. Just something to think about for the future.

If anything, I would suggest an assistant for packaging and shipping. Or button pressing for cons when you get late notice. I know you enjoy certain parts but when you need to spend a week straight pressing buttons for cons after they just get you in two weeks before the con, a second person might help.

This is my opinion you can do whatever you want. If you were to do an online store yourself you could always offer hand signed pictures and Norm signed pictures. For shipping stuff out you could do that every 2 weeks if not once a month.

I'm not sure if they do it in BC, but I got my label printer as a refurb from Chit Chats for $175 plus tax (in ON). And, getting it from them, I knew it'd be compatible with their labels. Way cheaper than any other printer I found. :)

You should do what you suggested earlier...once a month or once every 2 months have your 'latest edition' (enamel pins, limited print etc) at that time, hire someone on a casual basis to do some of the jobs (i.e. packing the packages, labelling, cutting if you need to) that way you're not hiring someone long term, not stressing yourself out but still getting to make the art that you want for your fans and have a little short term help along the way. I'm sure there are many 'jack of all trades' companies you could hire from...Just an idea.

I’ll be your assistant for free.... I’d just have to move countries and start a new career in Canada. In all seriousness, it is hard giving up control when you’ve been on your own. At work I tried to do everything on my own and it wasn’t fun. Then one day I finally realized I couldn’t do it alone anymore, so I requested for an assistant. Shes made my life so much easier at work and it doesn’t mean the work load is less, it’s just better quality and more can be done at a time. Also I can breathe now. Haha

Val K I think as long the art itself is yours or you say the art was inspired by this or that and you don't claim the characters are yours and give credit where credit is due then I think it's fine. Plus, Baylee was doing this for charity anyway so I think it's okay but I'm not entirely sure.

I think she answered this on one of the more recent con vlogs (in the comments perhaps). Disney for example are very strict on fan art for sale while Japanese companies are much less strict (hence why she can sell Pokemon fanart but not Disney I guess). I don't remember all the details.. :)

Legally speaking, as long as its transformative in nature its completely fine! Like doing fan art in a new style or configuration is completely okay to sell for profit! Disney has some issues with it because they have whats essentially "extended copyright". Some of their characters are so well known and so universal, like Mickey and Donald, that even the likeness of their characters are protected under copyright. Those characters are automatically associated with Disney, so they have the right to protect their company image and profit, essentially. But their copyright is actually going to expire in a few years and the US probably wont re-extend it, since they already did once.

Girl. You have to realize this is a business. That's the only way you can actually work from home, because it's a business! And it's been asking you to grow for a long time. I think we all can see how hard it is for you to give up control, but you could do so much more even if you hire help for the housework or small stuff like editing blogs. You've said before that you only put clips together and that's it. I want you to really think about it, maybe ask yourself if not expanding it's something you'll regret in 10 or 15 years. We all take risks, you did once leaving work and going full-time youtuber so I really don't understand the fear, from my perspective is only going to hurt you and your possibilities of keep on doing this from a finantial perspective. Things evolve and you can't stay in the same place forever. I say it with love and admiration even thoug people are going to hate on this.

I think that if you opened your shop fully, you could dedicate a little bit of time every day specifically for packing or making up your orders. I think you’re right that doing regular stuff all the time on the shop wouldn’t fly off the store, but would probably make a slower, more consistent influx that you could plan for every day.

Also, if you don’t get a label printer, there are these labels that are just two huge sticker labels on 8.5x11 and you can print two labels a sheet. “Half sheet self adhesive labels” is the title I saw.

Find you an assistant who is looking to have a simple start and doesn't require salary immediately. Perhaps someone willing to do work for shout outs or art trade or something like that.
