This week, I'm finishing Samantha's winter ensemble by adding the collar, capelet, and closures, and I'm making a faux fur hat to match. This is a tam-style hat, which I'm drafting from scratch, which was a fun challenge.

I love this SO much! I have Samantha also, and recently renewed my love for her when I got my niece an American Girl doll for her 10th birthday. Even as a child, I would never have fit into the human-size clothes they offered when I got my doll, so seeing you as an adult with her fashion really warms my heart ❤️. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

If you want an other style of circular hat you can try out a balloon hat or a typical barrette thats made out of two circles. I don't really sew much but i make hat's for my dolls and I mostly crochet hat's but the basic shapes are more or less the same.

Take the top clasp off and put it at the bottom, just use the ribbon at the top and you can make it as tight or loose as you want...the clasp is behind the ribbon anyway.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels weird in a beret hat! I think it would have looked less weird if the band was a circle, I think the weird poofing you don't like comes from too much fabric being gathered by the elastic, if that makes sense? But if the band were a circle with the inner circle big enough to fit loosely on your head before sewing, once that's sewn it would be big enough to just cinch in a little with the elastic and poof the perfect amount.

I think this is a pretty 'wearable' garment. Anyone who doesn't know anything about American Girl wouldn't think it was anything but a nice wool cloak with a sort of classic styling. I do think you should add one more clasp to the bottom, like you talked about.

Useful and pretty! I also am bad at wearing hats. Baseball cap is about it for me partly because my hair is almost always in a ponytail

My grandmother taught me to make beret/tam hats by making two identical circles of the size I want the hat to be, then cut a circle from the center of the one I want to be the bottom so it my head size plus enough to gather up. Then just sew the perimeter (same for the lining) and make a channel for the elastic. This avoids the whole squidging around of a straight band to a circle.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's the difference between a beret (what you're describing) and a tam, though, right?
@greymouseher
@greymouseher 2 жыл бұрын
No, i believe a tam is a regional type of beret and the only difference is a tam has a pompom on top and then way they are positioned on the head is slightly different. Construction is the same otherwise
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 2 жыл бұрын
@@greymouseher oh interesting - I thought the band bottom vs circle bottom meant it was two different types of hats.

What about moving the top clasp down to the waist, and just doing the top with the ribbon? And that way you can have it looser around your neck.

The Bias makes sense, because the collar is a curve.

I suspect the collar on the doll is on the bias for ease of construction at doll scale- its a pretty small tight curve!

This is a very nice and functional garment. You could wear it over a winter coat on the really cold days for walking the dog. The capelet will help with keeping your shoulders dryish on rainy days. Note.. don't try and drive with it on. Which is why I stopped wearing capes. As soon as you buckle up, your arms are trapped.

I could never figure out tams/berets, until I realized that my large head needed a larger hat. I crochet mine 12 inches across, and with a 3 1/2 inch underside/band. I usually cover at least one ear, and then tug it different ways to the side for the most flattering shape. It needs to look asymmetrical, at least on me.
@KathrynsRavens
@KathrynsRavens 2 жыл бұрын
If I was going to do the hat I'd start with a sewn beret pattern to get the look while not necessarily following what they did for the doll. I think it still looks cute though!

Would it be possible to skip the clasp at the neck? And put it at the waist instead since you have the tie and also it might not agitate you at the neck as much?
@LadyRebeccaFashions

I think there would be too much strain on the ribbon ties. And I bought another clasp for the bottom. 😉
