I looked at a number of steel sailboats when I was first looking to buy. Most were in poor condition after 10 years because they didn't pay attention to the details that you do! You are definitely the one to learn how to do it right!

Thanks for your good comments Brian, appreciated sir and yes, understood re. the many compromised and 'short cut' steel builds around, unfortunately. I did and continue trying to do careful boatwork with everything,.... 🙂👍🏻

Just an idea for the 'Hatch cover'. Cut an opening in the cabin top where the opened hatch will rest, install a Perspex lid on the hatch itself, then build a low frame around the area forward of the Dodger and cover it with a hinged lid topped with more Perspex. You now have light whether the hatch is open or closed, and, when closed, the 'cover' can be unlocked and hinged up for potential ventilation... I'm curious as to why folks working in brutally hot climates don't make up a 'Chiller Vest'. The commercial ones are hella expensive, but a cheap cloth vest with a lot of silicone tubing stitched onto it in zig-zag fashion, front and back, that uses a small 'peristaltic pump' to circulate fluid from a bucket full of ice water, would do wonders at keeping your core temps down to a comfortable level... Even setting up a remote household AC unit with the cold output contained in a box with a dryer vent hose attached, would allow you to direct chilled air to where ever you might be working!... 🥵😎
@BuildingSYMistress7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your good comments Mike, appreciated and jfyi Mistress has a hatch with portlight just for'ward of the companionway hatch garage, as well as of course this main hatch which will also give light inside and re. the 'chiller vest' suggestion, I think that it sounds a bit complicated and would get in the way of the thousands of necessary moves up-down-sideways-etc. whilst working. Although quite uncomfortable, when it's hot like that summer was it's just a case of keep at it and keep the fluids up and the fan did also help a lot! 🙂👍🏻

Amazing work and the dodger looks brilliant. I am going through a similar experience totally rebuilding my steel ketch and can appreciate the effort that you have put into Mistress. I thought it was hot in the Canaries at 30degC but can't imagine working in 51degC heat. I can't wait to see the finished dodger.

Bruce that dodger is look good! I feel ya about the heat, after September 11 my chef career had to take a side line. The fine dining here in the states took a hard hit everyone was afraid of fling it seems. All that to say I did a few year's of house framing here in center Florida. Just un-godly hot . Keep up the good fight you are closer to finishing than you were a year ago. 😊

Are you going to remove the 4 small metal supports on the inside of dodger? Will you add stainless hand rails on top of dodger? Why didn’t you drill holes on traveler before you welded in place? Great job looks good
@BuildingSYMistress7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your good comment and questions Jan, appreciated : those X4 angled supports are structural so stay in place + make good hand holds and for eg. the MFD will be supported on one; yes handrails will be bolted on later, probably to the side panels because the top will support solar panels and re. drilling traveller bolt holes, the hole positions away from the centre change somewhat once it's curved and so clamping the section in it's final place first is required 🙂👍🏻

Thanks BBTR team, appreciated and re. the Wattyl EFC, it is BRILLIANT and can be used on any substrate, has been around for a long time,.... until Wattyl were swallowed up by Danish Co. Hempel who last year axed a number of what were excellent Wattyl products including the EFC! It is (was) SO lightweight, easy to mix, easy to apply, VERY easy to sand, remains very flexible so does not crack/open, can be overcoated by almost anything, was way cheaper than any other marine fairing compound product globally, etc, etc,... Competition?! 🤔👍🏻
