We're down to the wire for the School of Traditional Skills "Companion Planting" shoot and this is the finish line. We're finishing the vegetable garden and cottage garden and the wall and stairs.

For most of my life I was a city boy, gardening in the suburbs. I was the first generation in my family to not grow up on a farm and somehow it was still there inside me. So now my wife Emilie, son Noah and I have moved to a small farm (at least it will be) and we're documenting our journey on this channel. Building gardens and chicken coops, buying a dairy cow and who knows what else lies in store. But we can't wait to take you with us!

So today is the day for the school of traditional skills!! Woohoo! It sounded like you said they would be there for a couple days? I hope it's going swimmingly. Congratulations on all the work you and your family did to prepare. Hopefully the weather, groundhogs and the homestead animals are all behaving themselves. It seems totally reasonable that you take time off, or shorten videos sometimes. Life happens. And, "green necklace"?! That's such a fun turn of phrase!

Have you considered a moss garden for the area you’re going back and forth on about sod and clover? It would keep down weeds, always look lovely, and it doesn’t need mowed. Your climate might not allow for it, but perhaps it would- meanwhile, how about something like oregano or another low spreading herb? It might even deter the gophers?

Grass is the right choice. it would take less than 5 minutes to mow and it is not going to invade the garden.

I have to pull their seedlings out of my beds and even pots constantly. I have both red and white and actually use them medicinally, especially the red, so they do have their own place. My reds are actually a collar outside my main garden bed, similar to yours and works well to hold the soil on the slight slope it's on.
