• RESTORING an OLD Shop ...
~
Now that the MAJOR remodeling is FINALLY done, it's time to turn my attention to making this shop FIT Salvage Workshop!
We are going to create one of the most unique shop work spaces you'll ever see, and the transformation from white walls to rustic is INCREDIBLE!
Just about ALL the materials used throughout the decorations / wall coverings here at at the cave were SALVAGED and repurposed!
I wanted to create a space that fit the channel and an amazing place to work and create content for you moving forward! I think we achieved that goal, but I'd love to know what you think!
As always, I hope you enjoy the video, and I look forward to hearing from you in the comments!

Matt, I was an electrician in NYC for over 34 years. On your black outlets that you installed on the wall: you may want to wrap the screws with black insulating electrical tape to give yourself an extra level of protection against dead shorts, and ground fault conditions, especially the ones with the galvanized sheathing. Electric does not like stray metal. If the hot leg comes into contact with that you could have a problem. Take care and nice work.

Man! That's a GREAT transformation! I love the use of re-purposed materials and how you don't let perfection be the enemy of good enough. Any imperfections are just overwhelmed with the overall ambiance of the place. Great job dude - this is why we love watching your projects!!!

If I'm not mistaken, that threshold that you put caulk under is supposed to be height adjustable with the 4 screws to raise or lower the threshold to get a good seal to the bottom of the door when it's closed. The caulk you put under it is going to lock it in place and defeat the purpose of it being adjustable. And you will likely get cold drafts under the door in the winter. That's a very creative resourceful design on your walls.

During the wood crisis, when OSB was crazy high, I bought 3/4 cabinet grade plywood cheaper than the OSB was for my shop walls. It doesn’t matter where a stud is, you can hang just about anything off of the plywood. I like that you used 3/4 on the walls.

i think a giant scrap metal sign for your logo in the center of that board with some neon strips for backlighting would give it a realllly nice rustic accent. Use some rebar, and scrap metal, throw in some engine parts, broken tools, lay it out and weld it all together. I think it would look fantastic.

I would suggest going back and trimming a bit more of the tin around the electrical outlets and/or wrapping some electrical tape around the socket. With the spacers you used to raise the sockets, the electrical connections on the sides are also raised up out of the electrical box and right in line with the tin and there appears to be enough movement that over time, just regular use of the sockets might result in the socket moving just enough to make contact with the tin and electrify your wall.

I think the pallet wall looks great. The boards over the metal panels kind of works. The wood paneling is where it goes astray. Especially when the grain starts going vertical. In my opinion the best look would be the pallet wall pattern all the way around the room. Next I would say toss the metal panels for horizontal wood grain on the rest of the walls. And just pallet pattern pieces only extending from the sides of the pallet wall.

Looks great Matt. I took your lesson to heart - my son was bemoaning having a rotting cladding on a shed so I suggested looking for some salvage tin, wood, or something… so now the hunt begins 😊 Yes I think one or more easily visible Salvage Workshop signs in the shop as a backdrop for your filming would be a great idea … good advertising and reinforcement of the channel.

You mentioned the plywood was previously used as flooring, I saw a video a long time ago where a guy cut a bunch of plywood into 8" strips, shuffled them up to vary the grain then put it down as flooring and finished it. That looked really good too.

Young man, you have made a nice shop space into an awesome shop work environment. In my most humble opinion, you have raised the bar for shop standards and done so economically and with great creativity. Congratulations sir, thanks for the video. On your mountains, shadow box them at different depths, it may give some dimension to the entire space with different depths from different viewing aspects, be a good place to display the Tonka toys I see setting on your bench, just a thought sir.

Impressed is not a big enough word. Love it! I want to address the "UN-NECESSARY" comment. It makes you feel good. It makes you feel like coming to work everyday. It makes you happy. It was necessary! A couple things I would do,,,,,,,, Hang that hood you have sitting on the bench on the wall. In your travels, start putting name plates like Cat - International - Fiat-Allis on the walls. I'm sure you see many name plates in the forgotten junk yard. Not decals but name plates. Metal name plates. Maybe a grill or two. On another note, I enjoy every video. I was worried you were going to hang up the camera after not seeing you for a few weeks. Glad to see you're back and that left hand waiving! We are ready for the repairs on all the equipment.

on the beautiful pallet wall, I'd recommend getting a (probably two piece) Salvage Workshop logo cutout of steel, maybe painted either white or black, whichever is most visible on the wall, and hang that centered on the wall. I'm not saying having a big circle covering it up, i'm saying turn what is currently black in the logo into the bit that would be metal. everything else would be air to show the wall through the logo.

Nice work Matt, if you make your mountain theme on the wall out of paper mache you can have 3d rocks and features that you can shadow paint to accentuate the depth without too much weight hanging there, salvage some newspaper to make it match the theme, keep up the good work. Always mount your fire extinguishers near an easy opening exit for safety.
