I built a walnut tambour wooden rolling door record cabinet with 3d carved rolling wood door that makes wood look like its flowing like water. The rolling wood tambour door is made from a single 8 foot long black walnut live edge slab I got from Vintage Reclaimed Lumber in Oklahoma City.

I almost hate to throw this at you, but if you would have made two slots on the curve of the cabinet aligned with the slot on the long plane, the doors would have slide in straight into the channel. Make inserts to fill the slots that screwed back in so that they can be taken off to replace tambor doors, heaven forbid they ever get damaged. Hope that made sense. Enjoyed the watch.

I had a brief stint in custom commercial woodworking back in 2007. I worked in a one man workshop with me being that one man's assistant. He was an accomplished 50-year+ master woodworker who'd been building cabinetry, tables, chairs, etc, since he was 12, while I was the 36 year old nube who tried his patience daily. I "helped" him do a small $95K kitchen in Santa Barbara, CA, and an over $600K whole home (kitchen, library, bathrooms, closets, master bedroom) in the SF North Bay. We'd build and install unfinished, and then the pieces would be later stained in place. I once asked him what makes a professional woodworker, and he replied, "When you, by yourself, can fix any mistake that you make, and nobody would ever know because the fix is invisible." The GFC ended my woodworking career opportunity and sent me in another direction, but I really miss it.

Well actually Jonny, this is my first of your projects. It's not my style but why should you care! You made something with machines but you put your soul into it and made it human, huge respect for that. I'm a pretty traditional wooden boatbuilder that cut my teeth with complex shapes achieved with hand tools and usually turn my nose up at woodworkers that rely too heavily on machines and CAD who make lifeless pieces, but there was something different about this. It's the first time I've seen something like it. Whatever you charge for this it's worth every penny, I see the effort and expense you go for perfection because I am the same. I love to see good problem solving, that's all we really do at the end of the day. I see you're going to go far on your journey and I'm here for it. Nice work

You will probably never see this comment, but an old woodworkers/construction finishing trick my dad taught me was to mix some saw dust of the wood you're working with, with wood glue to make a paste to fill those "oops" holes and gouges. Once dry, sanded, and sealed, you'd never know it was there.
@JohnDlugosz

@@JohnDlugoszStraight 🤡 reply... Let ask you something... What do you think is the *entire point* of using _sawdust_ from the same wood? 🤔 If it stood out _so much_ as to negate the use of this *very common* method used by woodworkers; that means it was a _skill issue_ and *you* used way too much glue to sawdust ratio in your filler 💯 Also, seeing as this method is used for filling gaps/cracks that are _way too small_ for an inlaid patch of new wood and the wax filler pens on the market don't finish the same as wood _either..._ What would you offer as a better alternative? 🤔 KZbin comments are absolutely infested with 🤡's who are quick to critique or tell others how "they are wrong" without adding anything *actually useful* to discussion themselves 💯

That story about the coach getting Pythagorean wrong reminded me of a guy from our church who often got words wrong, or just used a wrong word. For example, when the kids were going to do a skit that needed a narrator, he kept saying "narranator". Like in the coach story, everybody knew what he meant so just went with it. The time he made it hard to just go with it was when we were loading up gear to take up to the local park for our annual Christmas carols event. We had a lightweight lectern that hadn't been loaded yet, and the guy called out "what are we doing with this rectum?" I said, "Sorry, what?" and he said "The rectum. Are we taking the rectum with us?" Our poor pastor was within earshot but out of view and almost collapsed in silent laughter. After the event, we put a nice clear label on it that said "LECTERN".

This beautifully carved, black-walnut record cabinet with a continuous-grained, tambor door made from a slab is breathtaking. But in the well-produced video and narration documenting the clever build, the genius woodworker and philosopher also shares his personal path to craftsmanship: “pursue progress not perfection.” And then “wing it.” Good advice for all artists. Love this!

I love your videos! If you ever run into that problem again when making a sliding door, you can cut out the back corner to slide in the wood door. The back corner would allow for the wood to bend in the same shape of corner so you can utilize the bend in the board. Hopefully that makes sense. Awesome build!!
@LaurencePlays
@LaurencePlays 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, that was my thought too - cut it so it only has to bend in the way that it can bend! That would make the cut slightly less hidden, but given he ended up having to cut half the back anyway, it would probably still be better!

INCREDIBLE BUILD!! The creativity and translation from idea to completion is awe inspiring. Hard to watch, though. I recognize you need to make some money, but the insane amount of advertising in this one episode - including the long t-shirt *AD* explaining that this ad is your solution to viewer complaints about too many ads is either completely tone deaf or a purposely rude response to viewers. Did you boast an $11,000 payout for this one cabinet AND a plea for merch purchases to “stay afloat” on top of your monetized channel dollars from that completely tricked out shop? It’s feeling a lot like selective poverty. KZbinrs complain about complainers (like me, at this moment), and I get it. The only reason I took the time to write this is, I admire your creativity and would love to see more of your work. I’d bet that’s why other viewers complained about the ads. It’s not intended to be mean spirited, it’s a plea to include us in your viewership. EDIT: Goodness grief. The client is you. So, how’d you decide to title this video in a way to make it even more deceptive? I rescind my plea to be included.

I can appreciate that coach’s problem. I usually teach primary age children, 3.5 to 11, my partner teaches 11-18, I also teach craft & jewellery workshops to mostly adults. I was in my partner’s school as I’d been doing some jewellery with the children for a fund raising project they were doing. My partner was supposed to be teaching but had an emergency child protection meeting, so I ‘taught’ his class…advanced maths! 🤦🏼‍♀️I have dyscalcula, like dyslexia but numbers. I was wayyyy out out of my comfort zone, I felt like I was speaking a completely different language 😂 later he said “I thought you’d just teach some more jewellery making” 🙄😂 we as a family did get a lovely Chinese meal out of it 😂 Where I worked full time we could swap classes so we taught our strengths, for example art, phonics & reading are my strengths and specialisms so someone who wasn’t artistic would swap for the class I was teaching. It was good for the children to know other staff too, so when they had a new class in the school year it wasn’t such a huge change.

Outstanding. I might try a countertop version. Idea: I wonder if you could have cut a short section on end and just slid it straight in. Much less to repair. Could also add something that’s removable for future repair work. Held in with magnets.

Very cool build. There was a noticeable 5 seconds of silence around 10:30 and it was like a deep breath lol
