I think you are right Rob, it is pissing out, I am going to have another look today, I have got some small o rings, its only two small grommets behind the very tiny spring clips that hold it together, which I am in mortal fear of pinging across the workshop! All the best, Cliff

Cliff, With no load that kill switch didn't seem to stop the lathe that quickly. I know some VFD's have a dump resistor so that when the power is cut the motor's energy is dumped into the resistor slowing it down faster. The addition of that VFD has made it a useful machine, well done mate. Carroty?
@CliffsShed5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right, needs a bit more programming to stop it quicker, I think you do need a braking resistor to "stop" it though, need to look into it. Carroty! Colloquial for crappy!😐 All the best, Cliff

Cliff, might want to rethink your estop switch, if you cut input power to the VFD while it's running it can damage the VFD, there is a dedicated E-stop pin on the control side that will stop the motor with braking without damage to the VFD.

Thanks a lot for the video Cliff! Can you tell me the specs of your new motor? This is on my ToDo list for my shop. I just watched your DRO videos after getting a cheap kit on Vevor for my Compact 10 - which is the little brother to your lathe with no gearbox. I've also got an Acorn CNC kit sitting around, which I hope to get going on my lathe one of these days....

Thanks Cliff, I notice there are vent holes in the motor under with the chuck are you going to make a cover for the motor? My Myford has the same and is prone to getting chips in there. Thanks for sharing Cheers
@CliffsShed5 жыл бұрын
Dead right Raymond, when that motor was on the myford I had a cover on it that only left the pulley end open, I took it to bits to give it a clean before I put it on the emco and it had an awful lot of swarf in it, to the point where if it had got much more it would have been in serious danger of an electrical or mechanical fault! Problem with the emco is the motor is longer than the original and comes up the bed a bit, the carriage clears it but not by a lot, so there's not much room to get a cover in, with hindsight it would have been better to have had some spacers on the studs and pushed the motor back a bit, I may do it if protecting it becomes a problem, would likely need longer belts though. I think I should put motor cleaning on the maintenance list for both lathes, that would be the list I never get round to doing! :-), All the best, Cliff

Hello Cliff, great video. I have subscribed. I have exactly the same lathe, mine is factory single phase. Could you tell me which model of motor you have used for your VFD conversion please? I'd like to do similar and would like to keep using the toothed belt. Cheers, Dean in Oxfordshire.
@CliffsShed4 жыл бұрын
Hello Ian, cracking lathes aren't they! the motor I've used is a 1HP brook compton, it came with the second hand vfd I bought for the ml7, so thats all I know about it, it only just about fits and you do need longer belts but the drive from the old motor went on fine. Have you got the milling attachment? Mine is a bit noisy in some of the speed ranges but works like a dream, was a bit tatty looking when I bought it (and wasn't cheap) but I am really pleased with it, of course now I lust after the next one up, bit out of my price range though! Thanks for watching, ATB, Cliff

Just watched a couple of your videos, you have got the milling attachment!
@retromechanicalengineer4 жыл бұрын
@@CliffsShed Yes, I have the milling attachment. It works quite well. Surprisingly rigid for such a small unit. My lathe is an early model with the threaded spindle. It was expensive to buy but came with a lot of standard equipment. Sorry about the poor quality of my videos! Could you tell me where you bought the longer belts? Thanks for getting back to me. Stay safe in these unusual days, Dean.
