As soon as I saw the intro shot of Sprocket, it gave me an idea for a whole series of videos! How to mill brass covered in cat hair, how to blue steel covered in cat hair, how to powdercoat small parts covered in cat hair, etc.

Beautiful job on the hand pump, Quinn! I had the same issue with the travel of the pump handle and had to do the same thing - file out the slots in the linkage. And the same issue with the o-ring retainer. My solution for this was to open up the hole for the ram a little bit so that the deformation from tightening the set secrew didn't impede the movement of the ram. Your solution is much more elegant though! Thanks for sharing the struggles you have with the design too. Thats one of the things that sets your channel above the others. It's real! I appreciate that! 😊

Hobby machining - I make parts for fun using all my cool toys. Sometimes I make a part twice so I can have double the fun. If I’m really ‘enjoying’ the process I might even make the part more than twice for compound fun 😂

As a former film technician, I always feel a tinge of sadness when I hear “Sprocket”…have a look at old film camera movements, the machining is superb, and the whole ‘sprocket” thing will always be evocative for a generation of film folks😢❤

I had a reverse Tuxedo Cat. (Black-capped ears and tail, white body) and Casey NEVER purred, That is common with these cats.

For accurate groove spacing, I've cut the first groove, zeroed the DRO and then used the grooving tool to pull the stock out of the chuck the required distance.

I love this project, I've learned a lot about model engineering. If I may make a suggestion, if you don't have a 5C collet for your lathe you could use your square collet block in a four jaw. Obviously you got away with it but in the future it may help?

I'm a recovering technical illustrator and I have to say how much I love the dimetric and trimetric projection illustrations in Kozo's plans. You just don't see that stuff these days. Which is weird because doing it digitally is stupid simple compared to how I learned with pencil and paper back when the earth was cooling. Thanks for the video. Sprocket can come visit me anytime. 🤣

My wife and I are fortunate enough to live with a 14+-ish year old cat. She puts up with us in a well mannered cat way, We have a regular live with us dog as well, and currently, we have my daughter's dog as well, while she is reuning with some friends. If I was invited to change something in this pump, maybe I would change that brass o’ring retainer, with a external thread design, not using that small screw. Despite of this, pristine work, amazing results, as always!

Perhaps in a few years, you'll be on par with This Old Tony....then you just put that short part in the lathe, run it in reverse, throw old chips at it, and wha-laa....your part is now longer!

Wonderful project! Probably too late, but I would suggest a chamfer at the top of the internal pump lever and (if you can) at the very end of the handle. It'll just make mounting the handle more satisfying.

A little food coloring in a syringe squirted near the intake cone could have helped visualize the flow, at least until the dye mixed thoroughly.

Just wonderful. Hey it's actually easy to accurately cut rod while it's spinning using a hand hacksaw and fine blade. Takes a practice cut or two to get the hang of starting the cut where you want it, but then Bob's your uncle. Now who says that?🙂

Do you think a simple anti-vortex plate, soft soldered around the base of the inverted funnel, would help the pump pick up water by preventing it from sucking air at low water levels?

By chance, would Loctite work on that bushing? A low strength version that could be removed with a small amount of heat when needing to replace the O-ring?

Wonderful video, and execution of the process. One thing that would help me as someone who does not know design specs or machinging - try showing completed parts and how they mesh together clip before the actual machining of said parts, so I can follow along. Showing them after is the usual MO of most videos, and I wonder why ?? Your creating something beautiful and functional and so what could be better ? Cheers

Yeah, seeing the finished parts laid out might be a bit more satisfying at the beginning, but a YT creator should test the effect on total views and view length before just doing what viewers request. Worth a test, I guess.
