Hey Evan. Put a brick under the upper side of the gate and a cinder block under the lower side to hold your gate. Fine tune it after and the attach your hinges. Then grade the lower side

I know some guys like to put top hinge pointing down to prevent gate theft, but if you point it up it will help support weight of the gate.

Great job 👍, I would redo the gate like you said you should have, raise the pins hinges and add some stone underneath and maybe even up the ground on the inner side to let the gate travel both ways to make that double way lock 🔒 usable. You did an excellent job with the stock panel no one could have done a better job with it.

Good job on the fence. We used two 2x4's and bolted three bolts and sandwiched the wire in-between, I have not used the wedge woven wire stretchers before. It's hard to hang a gate on uneven ground, I've hung dozens of gates and I still issues with uneven post for gate openings. I enjoyed watching, thanks for sharing, have a nice day.

Great job...on the first gate would recommend that it opens "in" and hits the post as a stop. That way if they push against it (and they will) the gate is hitting the post.

Sggest you swing the first gate into the pasture. that way no tree cutting, cattle push against so, the strong post is great as gate stop. and gate can free swing into pasture, so road is not bloacked.

JudithB Looks great to me!! We had our 20 acres divided in quarters, with the barn lot in the middle and loading pen. It was easy to move the cows from pasture to pasture by clapping hands and calling them. We cut hay on east and west pasture, south pasture had the pond and n. pasture was a rocky mess so not much grass. After cutting hay, we let the cows in to clean the edges and any left over, then close it back up, and open the other hay field to be cleaned, then close up to grow next crop of hay. In winter, we opened one hay field at a time to graze and take pressure off south field. Worked well, and the cows had to go under bug thing passing thru the barn yard too.

Regarding that gate, on Welsh hill farms such as the one that I grew up on, what we do is hang the gate so that it is level and either put a large log underneath the gap (to stop lambs from crawling under) or for a more practical solution is to make a triangular attachment for the bottom of the gate that fills the gap and moves with the gate. Adding dirt underneath means that you create a ridge, making going in and out with a tractor more difficult. Conversely, you could dig the other side, so that if your field also acts as a hay field (for example), you have a flat surface for going in and out, meaning that wide implements do not lean to one side and hit the gate post at the top when going in and out. As you have it, you are putting too much strain on the gate attachment points as well as the post.

i always strip out barbs on the ends of my wires saves the fingers later, when we built our corral we put in lots of gates some on rings that pivot around a pipe post able to go about 200 deg or so helps lots in working cattle or other animals the loading alley has 3 gates in 15 ft or so, 8ft across one right at where the trailer sets to crowd into the trailer with loaded lots of cattle by myself with the setup.

When you have the correct steel post at height . Put the post pounder back on , rap some paper around at the height of where the top of post inside the post pounder is spray paint the top of the pounder , this will give you the height of the post without lifting it on an off to measure !

Greetings from Australia...good job on those fences mate! I prefer to use galvanised steel strainer posts with bolt on braces for gate fittings - makes adjustments SO much easier. That said, those timber posts do look good! Seems you folk in the US use timber posts a lot more than we do here in Oz...on new fences, steel is about all you see over here. Really enjoy your vids...

We have really poor availability of steel posts. We can get timber posts just about anywhere. Steel posts are also much more expensive than wood. Last time I checked they were almost 10 times the price. one 4" sch 40 post 10' long is about 400 usd

Two things I do different you might try. I cut h braces with a chainsaw. And pins I use a short piece of rebar cut on a chop saw. Thoes pins are expensive here

I sure hope the price of gripples, has come down. When they first came out, they tried selling them to the mines. Needless to say they where not a big seller. Cable clamps and a Klein Chicago grip to tension, for hanging messenger wire.

Cable pullers are a loathsome invention. And cable jamming between sheave and cheeks is a hassle. Replace that "axle" pin/cotter with a bolt and Nylock nut to adjust clearance between sheave and cheek. Might prevent future jams. Good job on the fence (but I don't think I could "live with" that one gate either...)

Question: is there a reason you don't hang the gates first and then finish the rest of the fence? It seems like the gates have the least wiggle room for error, so I am wondering if there is something that stops you from doing them first because I have never built this kind of fence and am about to.

Posts shift a little when stretching fence. Also a gate is another thing in the way when wrapping fence wire around posts.

I use 7 foot t-post on my woven wire fence installation. It is tall enough to put a barb wire above the woven wire fence. or a high tensil wire. So the total fence height could be 54 to 56 inches tall. So I have about 2 feet in the ground. A 6.5 foot T-post would probably work fine, if you wanted to save a few dollars.
