I moved to Finland this year and became resident for work and studies, and the Finns are a proud, strong, and resilient people. Unfortunately, most of the Europe never notices how amazing Finland is, since it's not a common travel destination compared to other countries in Europe. But Finland is a beautiful country, a rich culture of sauna and sisu, and the warmest friendliest people I've ever met. I've never been so proud to call this place "home".

Just wait. I've been here 5 years. The worst and best things about this country are the people. The warm welcome you're getting will wear off eventually. It's incredibly hard to make friends after that. I've made friends with a lot of foreigners over the years and I think about 90% of them leave, depressed cos they can't make any kind of social life. If you moved here to work, then that is good. If you moved here for a woman, then my honest advice is pack up and go home now

As a finn I would say the speaking of "finnish sisu" was relevant decades after ww2 but not anymore. Socialism period after that and our welfare system has weakened finnish people badly. I think the sisu is a myth from old days and old merits of our fathers in ww2. Our resilience is far from ukrainian people today. Fortunately we are now in Nato. Thank you everyone believing our army that is not bad but the attitude in real difficulties...cannot be proud of majority of our people.

@@fellow7091 Sisu is still alive and strong in finland. It's all about mentality and that kind of mentality is not much help if a war ever comes. Me myself receive support from the nation and i swear i will fight to the bitter end for my country. Even if the odds would be stacked against us. I'm far from the only one thinking like this. I agree that there are many people who seem lazy but if a foreign attack comes' i believe even most of them would fight to defend their homes, families and our way of life.

@@fellow7091Stfu you kremlinbot. You can't even seem to comprehend the consept of "Sisu". It's a mental state, which is truly only active when needed. It's not fucking magic, or a thing that will go away. Almost every kid in Finland is trained to kill and survive in extremely harsh conditions, and they are willing to go trough the training. Why? Because they KNOW, that if shit hits the fan, they need to defend their country. That's what Sisu is. You may not see it, but it is stronger now than it has been in several previous decades.

It's now a dream come true that we will finally have a joint nordic defence with Finland and Sweden joining NATO. Finally our brothers and sisters in all the nordic countries will stand up and fight as one integrated defence force against any potential aggressor(s). We all know how capable the Finnish military is, and its proud, brave history standing up to the USSR during the winter war and continuation war! I am really thankful! Big hugs from Norway ❤🤍💙

Finland is an incredibly impressive nation and I find myself wishing Id been raised there. The military conscription would have made an exponentially better person out of me and I believe the Finnish education system is far more effective than the US system. As much as I hate cold weather, I believe I could live in and enjoy Finland and be very proud to do so. The homogeneous culture and military conscription gives Finns something in common, everyone has at least that in common; I suspect it creates a tight-knit national "community." Finland has a small population with relatively little immigration. This has meant that there are not large areas where everyone has the same ethnic background, which has made integration much easier. Immigration areas are also formed within Europe. Where can I find housing and work if I move? You might move there and eventually you have the feeling of exclusion. But most often it is due to laziness or dyslexia, which are not incurable diseases.

The most decisive victory of any air force in the history of wars: Finland vs Soviet Union 1939-1944. 35:1 win to lose ratio. Meaning, one Finnish pilot shot down 35 soviet pilots, throughout the WW2, before he lost his own plane. You can find some more interesting achievements gathered in London wartime museum.
@trident6547
@trident6547 Жыл бұрын
What is even more remarkable is that they got a lot of their victories in obsolete planes. For example Hans Wind, awarded twice with the Mannerheim Cross ( our highest decoration of honour) flew a Brewster B239 (the export version of the Brewster Buffalo) from 1941-1943, claiming 39 of his victories in the type. It was already outdated at the end of the Winter war in March1940. Fortunately we got better planes at the end of the war. In June 1944 in a Messerschmitt 109 G ( considered the second best variant) Captain Wind led six 109s against a formation of Pe-2 bombers, shooting down four of them. Wind's streak continued in the days that followed; with a P-39 and an IL-2M on 15 June, two Pe-2s and a La-5 the next day, and on 19 June two P-39s (both of the 196 IAP; one flown by Hero of Soviet Union and eventual 29-kill ace Major A. V. Chirkov, who bailed out) and a La-5. On 20 June 1944, Wind added two La-5s, two Yak-9s and a Pe-2. On 22 June, he claimed two Spitfires and a La-5, with two La-5s and two DB-3Fs the next day. On 25 June, he downed three Yak-9s and two Yak-7s. He was our number two ace with 75 confirmed air combat victories. Wind was considered one of the most skillful aerial tacticians in the Finnish Air Force, and Wind's 'Lectures on Fighter Tactics' were written in 1943 and used in the training of new pilots for decades to come.
@realtsarbomba
@realtsarbomba Жыл бұрын
And big portion of those air victories were made with obsolete planes like Brewsters, Fokkers... IIRC it wasn't until 1942 or 43 when we finally received modern BF109G's, our air forces were masters with air tactics. Check out our aces Hans Vind and Ilmari Juutilainen

@@trident6547 Brewster B239 was not obsolete until about 1942 against the Soviet I-152 and I-16, which they mostly could put against Finland during 1941-42. But when newer Soviet and Allied types appeared, it was harder and harder for B239, both numbers and performance were insufficient. Aircraft development was of course extreme rapid those years. What was top notch in 1939, was clearly outdated in 1942.

We Finns have trained to truly fight threat coming from east for decades. Majority of NATO doesn't focus on that as much as we do, that's why we have this kind of mindset. We know Russia very well. NATO has been relying too much on their nuclear threat and has become too blind to other threats (being energy independent, protecting intelligence and electricity networks, protecting main roads and railroads from saboteurs, maritime protection from saboteurs, etc.). Main focus is being energy independent but sadly too many NATO/European countries have been too trusting in Russian energy. Finland's energy and other trade goods weighed heavily also on Russia but that was just common sense since they're our neighbours and we have had long lasting peace between us. Even still we have been building our own energy infrastructure for the past two decades. There has been some unfortunate delays e.g. Olkiluoto 3 nuclear reactor and some leftist politics destroying our energy providers such as putting stop in building more nuclear power and deciding to give up entirely on peat production.

I was a US Army officer who commanded in NATO on three occasions. I had the privilege of working with the Finnish Army in Bosnia-Herzigovina. They are superb soldiers and officers. I can say this through first-hand experience. Imagine an entire nation with military experience. Putin lost anything he was trying to achieve the moment Finland joined NATO. A large artillery capability is a major plus for NATO. We need to realize that if the allies put their mind to it that tgey can get Russia to the negotiation table with Ukraine to establish peace. We can not expect to get everything we want, but we are in a much stronger position than before the war. All nations, to include Russia, need to just ditch Imperial ambitions and get on with making life better for all the world's citizens of all nations.

We have a national service (conscription) for one purpose only: to defend our country and our way of life should the need arise. We're a a rather small nation when it comes to size of population, so fully professional army would be way too expensive for us. But motivated conscription army can achieve quite a lot too as was seen during the winter war. That's a pretty good motivation - or at least it was for me. I'm no longer a young man, but I'm still in reserve forces and very willing to take up arms if needed. And I'm also extremely happy to take a note that if we have to defend ourselves again, next time we won't have to do it alone. But just to make it clear, we also understand that with this alliance also comes responsibilities. We'll be ready to help our new allies when necessary.
