An afternoon on the stunning Lower Crathes West Durris beat on the magnificent River Dee in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Summer is the time for Grilse of the Dee and we find ourselves on one the most profile pools on the river - The Bridge Pool. Grilse are Atlantic Salmon that have left the river to go to sea and come back after just one year in the saltwater. We spend a few hours on light tackle getting in to action with the Grilse in the neck of the pool. The video provides some stunning views of the pool and the Lower Crathes West Durris beat in general and gives an insight into summer tactics for targeting grilse include fly selection, lines set and rod lengths. I hope you enjoy this video and it encourages you out for a day on the day. If you are familiar with the beat I hope it brings back many of your own fond memories of this iconic pool!

Hi. Thanks for watching and your kind comment! KZbin algorithms aren't too easy to navigate through but I'll keep putting out content and see where I get to. I enjoy fishing and making videos so at the end of the day I'm happy. Tight lines!!

Great video. Used to stand on the bridge salmon spotting. Never once did. I not see a fish! Never fished it, will do one day! Rue the day I sold my Hardy Swift, the silver dream machine! Loved that rod, find myself looking for one on eBay now and then. It was Tom Marshall that put me on to it at the Tay Ghillies day some years ago and it was love at first sight, the rod, not Tom!

You know I used to do exactly the same at the Mill Inn bridge. I always saw fish on the Culter side. There a few great lies there and the shingle just shows the fish so clearly on a clear day. You should definitely get a few days at Lower Crathes. It is a superb beat and the ghillie Robert is a top guy full of experience. Thanks for stopping by and I'm glad you are enjoying the channel. I have a few new ones coming soon! Tight Lines!

Many thanks for watching - glad you enjoyed it. The Airflo compacts are fantastic. I was using the 480gr on the #8. I liked it so much I got the 420gr also and use it on a #7. At 25 quid a go you just can't go wrong! Tight Lines!

Our west coast salmon all die after spawning , but the steelhead will drift back to the sea if they can and spend a coupla years there before coming back for another go round

For the atlantics practically all the males die in the river. I believe about 20% of females manage to get back to the salt but have to navigate a wall of seals and dolphins at the mouths of the river. Most of them will have some kind of encounter with them on the way in but we're healthy enough to evade capture. But on the way back in a weakened state I'm guessing they will be ravaged unfortunately

Looks like a fairly shallow river this parts

It's the time of year. The river drops right down in summer. In Spring and Autumn the fish will be down in the tail by the bridge. We would fish up the pool as high as this then. It is quite amazing the difference in height we fish this river and this pool in particular.

@Bannsider Hey thanks for the advice - I do appreciate it. I think I'll probably take my tippet up a size like you say - particularly given the small diameter offered by fluoro! Thanks for watching and tight lines!

Why did you play the first fish hard to keep it out of its lie, then return in the same area to let it swim back to its lie?
@FinLineFly
@FinLineFly 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. My thinking was it might disturb any other fish sitting in that lie so I was trying to keep it away and play it away from the lie. Released.....it seemed to head straight back there. Don't know if it actually makes any difference but that was my thinking.......... but what does anyone really know about what these fish do. Tight lines to you and I hope you have a good season!

Fishing on these rivers...all Catch and Release, its utter bullshit. Seals eating thousands of Salmon in the sea, and fishermen not allowed to even take ONE home per season. Nonsense. The DEE has literally tens of thousands of Salmon running up it.

It's a tricky subject to be sure. I'm just hoping for more salmon coming back to our rivers asap!
