That's a great perspective! I think you summed everything up brilliantly. One of the best videos on this topic so far.

Comfort content!!! That’s totally what it was!! I used to have his videos on in the background when I worked from home. I always thought he was super loud as well, but I appreciated the clarity and energy he spoke with. I could tell, by the end, he was just going through the motions. As a SOAD Stan I too was baffled by his choice to do a video on them. Come to think of it, that was probably the catalyst of his supervillain origin!

I used to "watch" his video as a background noise to help me fall into sleep.

By far the most objective and true opinion I've heard until now about Finn. As always a pleasure listening to you, Digi.

I’m sure music KZbin has the same frustrations as gaming KZbin where, if you don’t talk about what everyone wants instead of what you like, no one cares

Everyone on youtube underestimates how much marketing money is going into making anyone care about anything, and most of us have to ride the machine's enigma because frankly, we're not good enough at marketing ourselves otherwise. Also I wore your shirt in my next video LOL

I do admit in the vids I'm working on now that KZbin's an addiction to me too. Still at it, and heck video editing has become my job, but I've become deeply unhappy posting to KZbin. Not MAKING vids, still love that, but yeah posting is getting diminishing returns.

It’s fascinating and a little funny that you and I have extremely similar experiences with Finn McKenty’s work-I actually bailed before the System of a Down videos, but when I checked back in and saw he’d done them, I knew on some level that things were truly over-and fairly similar takes on what’s really going on here. I actually hadn’t considered the addiction angle, but that’s a remarkably astute point, particularly given that Finn has acknowledged being neurodivergent and self-medicating with stimulants to cope, which is really common with people like us. But I also want to bring up something important that a lot of people seem to have forgotten: Finn was, in his past life, not only a prolific and respected hardcore zine writer and publisher starting in his early teens, but his first real taste of infamy on the Internet wasn’t as a KZbinr, but writing for Metal Sucks as the arch-troll columnist Sergeant D. And those columns, while often witty and insightful, are also really cynical and abrasive and frankly pointlessly mean-spirited, clearly coming from the perspective of someone who loves hardcore culture but has a lot of personal baggage surrounding the scene and felt massively burned by parts of it. What’s more, his work as Sergeant D, while extremely contentious, was basically anonymous, a way of talking shit without getting hit. And I wonder if two further things didn’t thus enter into this: Finn initially started his channel as a way to reconnect with his childhood and early adulthood love of music and its culture through the lens of his more mature interests, but being someone who wasn’t really used to that kind of direct personal feedback at a distance without either the benefit of anonymity or the context of an actual community in which to hash things out, he got in his own head and freaked out a little before sublimating that into giving up and making content mill bullshit; but in doing so, I think that more cynical, cruel, ugly side of himself started coming out more and more, and going by how embarrassed he sometimes got when he copped to having been Sergeant D… I think he really dislikes that part of himself, and I get the feeling that becoming that person again felt like shit. Granted, I think his increasingly rightward shift in his politics, his ability to dish it but not take it more generally, and this latest wannabe villain arc keep me from being entirely sympathetic, but even so, I do genuinely feel bad for the guy.

Would love to hear you talk about indie animation. I've been trying to get into this because I see the issues with mainstream animation, but finding somewhere to start has been difficult. Hope to see more from you soon!
