Finnegan's Garage Ep.257: I CUT UP A $20,000 TUBE CHASSIS!

Finnegan's Garage

Күн бұрын

In this episode of Mike Finnegan's Garage, I get back to work on my 1961 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, which was a beautifully stock luxury car until I decided to cut it up and make it faster. The original x-frame chassis was removed and replaced with a custom, mandrel bent frame from MRC Fab in Kernersville, North Carolina. The car rides on Weld Racing Wheels, Mickey Thompson tires and Viking coilover dampers now. In this video, I cut into the chassis to make room for a massive radiator, aluminum shroud and dual brushless electric fans from Delta PAG. This video also marks the end of the contest for the Miller Welders Millermatic 142 MIG welder. Watch the very end of this video to see if you are taking it home!

They are tougher than me . Never again . Back to boots .. A few marks on my foot lol ..yea i got plenty of scars from ark gouging and other things to remind me what ppe is for lol

@@jimkillen1065 Those guys are tough as nails. Gotta respect a guy who welds stick in essentially bare feet, and you rarely see them flinch. I really like the parts of the video where you’re instructing your new cohost to do it the way you want it done. Whether he already knew how to do it or not, it makes me feel like I’m working with you on your car and I get to learn from you as you teach me how to do this stuff. Can’t emphasize this enough. A real nice addition to the channel for me.

Gotta admit, it's a little weird the guy helping fab and work the camera isn't Newbern, but I'm getting to like Joe a lot and I'm massively stoked for you that you have a buddy back in the shop with you and you're not going lone wolf the majority of the time anymore. I can only imagine how much longer producing a video must have taken with all the various equipment setups and tear downs and then trying to one-hand stuff while shooting a moving shot a la ol' Derek at Vice Grip. Already noticing a marked difference in project accomplishment during the videos vs going it alone. Can't wait to see how the dynamic grows and evolves between you and Joe. Still miss David, but grateful for you that Joe joined the team. Keep up the awesome work. God Bless!!!!

The Caddy is back! Also, Mike, something to think about for the dual injection system vs constantly swapping injectors is the safety factor of having fuel in the open under the hood every time you do that. Sounds like an increased chance to start a fire for sure. In terms on maintenance, if you put your gas injectors on the inside and alcohol injectors on the outside, it'll be much easier because the gas injectors are less likely to fail. Just some food for thought if you happen to see this. Love this build! (Even if it hurt a bit to watch a Caddy that was that clean get cut up 😅)

That is the Mile I remember from the early RoadKill days. Mike would always battle with Friburger about doing stuff right and Friburger would say "just make it work it don't have to be right" I hate it when I see a guy with Mikes skills doing shitty work no matter how crappy the project. I like the Caddy project because Mike is doing his best on it, and using n=his way above average skill set.

you have miles of room up front and heaps of room around the radiator for piping, I would go an intercooler (a cool double decker one). It will make the engine bay a little more messy but will keep your temps down when you are doing a drag and drive and not using the meth for the drive part. you could make up 2 sets of piping if you really wanted and when you switch over to the race setup, put the 'right angle' pipes in, but for the drive setup you could run with the intercooler. the left turbo would end up going into the right side of the intake and vice versa. also, if you put the street injectors on the inside, you will probably never have to touch them, atleast not before the intake will have to come off for some other reason, that way you can leave the big race injectors on the outside meaning you don't have to swap fuel rails over on a hot engine. you will just have to 'flush' the big injectors to get the meth out of them after the race. you really don't want to go spilling fuel on a hot engine or spilling some, then taking it down the strip at full power before its all evaporated away if you can avoid it.

All your content on your Coupe Deville brings back many memories of my hard working, blue collar hero who was so proud of his car. I sure wish he was still here to enjoy seeing what a sweet racing/cruising machine that you are beautifully and skillfully creating! Cheers to you Mike, and thank you for years of wonderful content. PS. I do have a fuzzy image of his car in a background of a pic taken from an 8mm film that I'll try to send via email.

That car is behemoth on every level. I love it. As far as the ball end Allen tools they come in very handy for adjusting the truss rods on some vintage spec guitars that have the adjustment on the heel of the neck. With a notch in the pickguard we can adjust the neck tension on the fly without removing the pick guard. Of course this means little to anyone without a vintage or vintage spec guitar I do wonder if the tool was invented for guitars first then adapted to automotive or the other way around.

You'll see if you get one or if you already have one them I wouldn't know but you definitely need one your dog will love you even more. Hot tip, I see you use tap sockets in this video. Get three flute taps and use them on the impact. I make temporary tooling for prototype use for a living. They run fairly straight and the impact saves time. Especially on thinner materials like that box tube. 2 flutes go crooked easily even without the impact 4 flutes don't have enough chip clearance for most steel applications. Also spiral taps. Generally come in three flute and they clear the chip better for a speed trap like that. Hope this helps. Keep on living the dream we all have.

I am stuck with what I have because I have stage for bladder cancer and am on disability, but I have a small shop where for yeears I built custom bikes. I hope to come up with the money for a better welder than I have, and if and when that happens I want to start a you tube channel. Before you do the hot side tubing, get some Solar Flux. Mix with isopropyl alcohol or water, paint the inside of each weld area. This allows full strength welds on stainless without having to Argon purge the inside. You will love it. Standard practice in many chemical plants. $35 (last I knew) worth of Solar Flux will save much Argon and eliminate the black sugaring on the inside.

What’s good? caddy is turning out very nice. I grew up in a welding shop that my grandmother owned in WVa. She passed away before I could take over the hydraulic shop. My step grandfather ripped the will up and family bible and put it into the fire. I never got a chance to grab one of my grandmothers millers or anything other. Every time I see a Miller I just think of her. Never had enough to even buy one. Now my kid takes priority and just pushes the miller dream farther away.
