Finnegan's Garage

It's no secret that my wife wants her car painted and that I refuse to make it happen. Her car is way too much fun to be locked up in paint jail when I could be out honing it daily. So I am always looking for things to fix in an effort to prevent the inevitable from happening. As luck would have it the front suspension started falling apart, providing yet another in a long line of excuses for me to keep the car dull and dented instead of shiny and bright.
Subscribe to this channel and you will also get early access to Finnegan Speed and Marine apparel, appearances, and other worthless junk. I upload new vids to this channel every Monday unless stuff goes sideways or I'm out of town shooting Roadkill. For exclusive behind the scenes photos follow me on Instagram @Finnegan999 and Twitter @mikefinnegan999 or on Facebook by searching my name. I'm not the musician, i'm the other Mike Finnegan. :) For apparel visit www.fsmgarage.com .

Your ignition cylinder (key cylinder) is worn. The car is what 45 years old or so? Well the little brass wafers inside the lock have worn down to nothing over the years so just about anything will start the car. Having a lot of weight on the key ring helps to make this happen quicker, but after 45 years it's just long past time to replace it. And now you can make a video of yourself changing the lock.....one more delay on the paint job.

Everyone knows what? Anyway I think that it's an 1985 in what sounds like "really amazing" condition, I am willing to bet even if it did require keys and you left it parked in a bad neighborhood with the keys in the ignition and the vehicle running with a sign on it that says "please take me" 3 days later you would find your Toyota sitting in the same location with an empty tank of fuel.
@AdventureCayman

Such a shame, I have seen so many people dump tons of money into some old piece of crap that never gets back on the road again (or back on the trail or track or whatever). Sorry I got your panties in such a twist over your old Toyota, I didn't realize you were so proud of it....you know considering you have no videos of it posted and you were talking smack about it. What my old Ford F150? Dude that's an old pickup I have that I use a few times a year to run to the home center or to get some mulch for the garden. It's actually in near mint condition and people have come up to my house on a few occasions trying to buy it. In any case, I installed a new ignition cylinder and new door cylinders in it when I got it. I got the parts for free from another local locksmith that I have known for many years. It took all of 10 minutes to install and now only the proper keys work the locks. Perhaps you could just give that a go before someone steals your rig. To purchase the parts would have been under $100. Oh I do know one thing 1985 Toyota's came with......cancer.....I would say rust but that would not be even close to what happens to that Nipponese metal.
@AdventureCayman
@AdventureCayman 8 жыл бұрын
Where I live we have major issues with rust, then again living a few feet from the sea will do that. Seriously if you don't keep your vehicles inside a garage their entire life here your vehicle will rust out into nothing before it's even paid off. I had an old Daihatsu Hijet work van, I didn't have room in the garage for it so it had to be parked outside for about a year. I used it a few times a week and ran it through the car wash once a month....well within a year it went from being rust free to literally falling apart with huge rust holes. The one sliding door would no longer open because the track rusted out. The thing only had like 63,000km on it.

+Finnegan's Garage how much swearing was involved in geting those nuta on in that frame
@pmodd
@pmodd 8 жыл бұрын
+Cole Robertson If he used a flex-end telescopic magnetic pickup tool to orient the nut, and a bottle jack with a rod to position the bracket hole hard up against the rail, probably very little swearing. I've done the old 'nut in the chassis through a hole' for conversion work, and holding the nut in place with a magnetic pickup tool bent at 90 degrees is quite effective, providing the threads are clean enough to thread the bolt in with minimal resistance. I usually run a tap and die over them first, just to ensure I can get some easy thread contact whilst I have little holding the nut firm. Once threaded a little of the way, it's easy to torque it up. In some cases I just welded the side of an old socket to a rod (at an angle) to hold the chassis nut in place.

Thanks for the fix! I need to fix my Blazer with the same issue. The threads to the bolt in 1 side of the frame mount on the drivers side are stripped. I already tapped it for a bigger bolt once, and it came out a few years later so it's time for a permanent fix. Thanks for the idea. I hadn't even given it much thought on how to repair it yet so this saves me time and headaches. Best day not at work, EVER!

most things that call themselves stainless are not really stainless ;) just because it is COATED with stainless does not make it stainless steel :) Also with all the grades of stainless it is somewhat meaningless unless it is Marine Grade stainless When it comes to vehicles and magnets, only plastic and aluminium will usually evade you :)

I don't know what kind of cheap stainless hardware you use, but mine does not attract to magnets at all. I just tried to "drag" a stainless bolt with a neodymium magnet and as I expected, nothing happened.

Finnegan's Garage Thanks man! Everything just fell in a row today, which was really nice. Also... If those nyloc's don't work out, try something like McMaster 90636A060. When I was at Navistar we stopped using Nylocs when they were failing the chassis shaker test (which on a dump truck, is a pretty severe test). Distorted threads passed and are about the same height as low-profile nylocs, or you can machine them down a bit if you want since the thread profile is actually ovular. Good luck! I really hope to get back to working on my junk and having my own parts fall of it again. hahaha

Great video Finnegan. You are starting to make me miss working on classic cars with my dad or reminding me of fond memories. As the ignition goes, everyone that I know that has owned a GM new or old has had this issue with the ignition after a few years. Many will start without a key and most will start with any key that will slide in and then can be removed at anytime, running or not. Has anyone else experienced this with GMs?

Hey Finn. Try using a wad of gaff tape, sticky side out on the end of a screwdriver or hook-n-pick to hold a nut for getting into tight spots. I know the general public isn't familiar with gaff tape, but this is yet another of the infinite uses for gaff tape. Love that motor!!!

That is awesome El Camino!! Never paint it. I am building a 64 Chevelle wagon with the rear facing rear seat (they call it a 9 passenger), got an LS1 out of a 2004 Corvette, 4L60E and 12 bolt rear end. All kinds of other trick stuff, should be fun. I guess I did bow to the wife and did a frame off and painted it. Hope to have it on the road in the next few months. Better thrash on the Elco some more before the wife gets her way!

Hey Finnegan, great vid bud :) I wanted to mention something.. When you have a situation where you are putting a nut or anything on with limited access like the holes you drilled in the frame.. You might try to superglue "your nut" to the screwdriver.. Then you will have full control of the nut in regards to location and positioning.. Just a trick we used in the Aerospace Industry.. Keep up the good work bud :)

also on the sway bar nuts inside the frame , if you weld a small length of flat bar to the nut , you can use it as a handle to get the bolt started in the nut , it also will wedge in the hole so the bolt can just simply be tightened from below with zero issues , been there done that more than once , my issue was rust and broken bolts forcing a drill or torch out situation ...

Just a tip on doing the bolts in the blind holes. Wrap the tip of a screwdriver with duct tape (sticky side out!) and stick the screw to the sticky tape and it will hold it long enough for you to get it started. Or if that won't hold simply tape it to the screwdriver or pick and you can tear it away once you get it started on the bolt.

I have a couple of suggestions for your small space of threading your bolt onto your nut. 1 If you have a magnet that can swivel that holds the side of the nut hold it in place then thread your bolt through. 2 if that doesnt work, use petroleum jelly to hold it on on the end of the your screwdriver or another skinny pick or something to hold nut while you thread your bolt through. Petroleum jelly is just sticky enough to hold stuff for a minute and will dissolve over time. Works great for small stuff to 😜.

You got it all with that little truck, power, good gas mileage when you can keep you foot out of it, and is holds the road like it glued to it. I really liked the video, yeah you guys are human just like the rest of us. You'd make a good teacher. I know you don't want to ever think about every having to do this repair again, those holes, I'd open the bottom edges up so you can get a box end wrench in there to hold that nut, use grease to hold the nut in the wrench. I know myself I like my nuts and bolts tight especially on suspension parts they see a lot of force on them. Now get those seats and floor shifted, Another great video.

Really thought you'd have magnet on a stick for getting those nuts in the frame. Also for the end link bolts if there isn't space for nyloc nuts you could drill and wire the bolt heads together. Enjoying these videos keep up the good work.

Being a GM A body owner myself, I would bet that issue stems from the frame flexing under hard launches. That is the passenger side where most of the "punishment" gos. Another great video!

On placing the nut inside the frame...I used some axle grease to hold the nut in a box wrench while I inserted it in the hole on a job similar to yours. A;so, my cousins 1951 Plymouth key would work in my 1952 Plymouth.

Also, weld a little rod of metal to the side of those nuts that you are having a tough time with in the frame, you can position them, hold them in place and leave them just like that in case you ever have to do that again.

The swaybar bolts strip out on all GM's The same problem happens on the 91-6 Caprices when you put a big sway bar on it or remove the sway bar bolts a few times. Your best bet is probably fishing a bolt in from the front frame horns. That or a long magnet, they maybe wedge a a flat head screw driver in there to hold it inside the frame. Best would be to get a knurled stud of some sort, fish it in from the inside, nut and washer, drive it through and use a nut to bolt the sway bar on. Its just hard to find a knurled stud! Of course the frame sway bar holes will have to be sized for the knurl
