To get the holes for seat belts etc, I like to install the carpet, trim it in place, install kick panels etc so it won't move, then make the holes using a soldering iron from underneath the car. That way they're in the exact place, and the heat singes/burns the carpet so it won't fray. Picked that tip up from Wheeler Dealers I think and it works great. Cheers.

Seeing the inside of this truck brings back memories of our '74 Suburban when I was a kid. Had a 454 and 2 additional fuel tanks. Was our car hauler at the time. It broke a crankshaft once so my stepdad fixed it. Later on we got an '86 Suburban with a 350. I miss both of them. Carpeting looks really nice, well done. I love those trucks.

For putting holes through the carpet, the best way I've found is to use an awl to locate the hole first followed by a hot soldering iron to melt clean even holes in the carpet. Melts like butter in a couple seconds and leaves clean neat circular holes perfect for bolts to pass through. PS, keep up the great vids, I've watched them all and look forward to more!!!

Two questions: 1 - have you measured the heat from the trans hump with no load on the back? (I suspect the load is heating the transmission a lot, maybe an auxiliary cooler would help) and 2 - who is the pretty lady who does a few cameos in the video?
@b1pig8 жыл бұрын
i think its both cool and interesting that i practically grew up in a 74 GMC Camper Special. It was the 3/4 ton model with the 14 bolt rear, 4.10 gearing and limited slip. my dad blew the original 350, but the original th350 remained in the truck its whole life. it never needed a rebuild, but my dad did doctor the valve body a bit. it finally went to the wrecking yard in 1994. we replaced the carpet and sound deadening mat after running without carpet for a couple of years. made a huge difference in the heat and sound.

We had a 78' GMC 2wd Crew cab with a built 454 with long tube headers. Biggest thing that helped with the heat was installing an SS style hood scoop. I built my own and actually cut the hood so the heat was pushed out over the windshield. HUGE difference!

There might not be an actual problem. I had a 78 suburban that the floor would get ridiculously hot and tranny temp was fine and exhaust was in factory location but with no insulation it was just bad.
@TheBrokenLife8 жыл бұрын
It's just the way these trucks are. After I painted my '74, which is even worse because the 4x4 transmission tunnel is about twice as tall so ir really stove pipes hot air, I drove around without carpet for awhile and the floor would just roast you to death. There was/is nothing wrong with my tranny or its cooling system. They just don't get any air flow over the top of the transmission. For that matter, our '78 Suburban was a 454 trailering special with turbo 400, aftermarket dual exhaust, and 3.73s inside the 14 bolt rear. The cargo area floor would actually get nice and toasty warm on road trips. It was the ideal place to nap during family vacations.

Love seeing this truck kept going and active, and good call on the grille swap. One other key thing I'd suggest to reduce heat would be a heat shied between the trans and the floor. With that, I'd bet it would drop to 90 degrees on the inside floor while cruising. Trans cooler upgrade might also be in order.

really enjoying the ongoing build with the Ramp Truck. the box chevys have been my second favorite of the bowtie lineup, behind the 67-72 design. and the little things Mike is doing on this one really put it in a different class from most of them i see running around these days. he's fixing it RIGHT, not going cheap, taking time (other than the rust inhibitor bit, haha) and pushing for quality (something that WASN'T learned on Roadkill!). been a fan of the show since episode 1, really like the how-to's. im getting ready to do the interior on my rare jetta coupe, and would like to deaden sound in it (that little 4-banger is loud, no way around that!). too bad they dont have an "LMC" for vw's (there might be one, i just dont know about it!). my brother built a `70 chevy out of their catalog, very impressed with the quality of products they offer.

Here is a better trick for finding seat belt and seat holes. Put bolts in the holes and lay down your new carpet. After you fit it right, feel for the bolts and use your razor knife and cut an X on the top of the bolt. Then you trim a smaller hole for clearance around the treads and pull out the bolts out and reinstall what needs to go in the holes. This gives you less of a chance of error. I know this is an old video but so an I and still love your videos.

I know this is an older video but on the rust in the floor, it's not the doors leaking that gets the floor. When people take out the kick panels they almost NEVER get the self tapping screws back in the same holes from the factory install. It leaves those few open holes in the One place on the truck you can't stand them to be. The cowls of these trucks (I still own several in various states of repair) drain water right down the outside of the panel that makes up the exact spot where the the kick panels are screwed to. Leave a couple holes there from changing stereos, the heater core, etc and the carpet and insulation from the factory will keep that cardboard GM put on the floor to start with wet nearly all the time. In CA that might not be an issue but Houston with 50" of rain the floors will rust through. Most trucks from '73 to '87 had drip rails, even on the dually pickups. Like me someone took them off because they look better without. You are right about the seals but even brand new they aren't the best. Drip rails solved that for GM. After all that ain't no '63 to '67 Corvette and those doors leak too.

if it was me personally i would of chucked a scoop on the top of the bonnet, and put two vents, one on each fender at the back and install a little drag spoiler under the firewall to drag out the hot air. Also a little trick for installing holes into carpets is to cut out only three sides of the hole, that way if you end up changing seats or in worst case screw up you can let the flap sit back down.

From the factory, I believe there are only 2 different screws and they're both phillip's head. At least that's how it is on my '74, and it was bought new by my Dad and I'm the only one to ever take the panels off of it. You have bigger door panels, but if I recall correctly from our other trucks over the years it was the same story, just more screws.

Hey mike for a future episode you should do a shift kit and 2000-2500 stall converter or a 4L80 swap with either a 454 head/cam/header arrangement for some power climbing grades if you take it to California or 70mph runs around the country. OR a budget 5.3 or 6.0 LQ swap from a junk yard for some MPG with fuel injection. I've always wanted to see this truck get a build or better yet a Cummins swap. Give it some more power and a cool sounding exhaust! I'm sure 6-10mpg sucks. Maybe hit up holly for EFI if your staying gas...
