Finnegan's Garage

Күн бұрын

Episode 271of Mike Finnegan's Garage is all about modifying my 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, which is called Blasphemi. This Hemi-powered beast is fast and unreliable and I fully intend on making it even faster and hopefully a bit more reliable. lol
With that in mind I decided to upgrade my ignition system to MSD Smart Coils. You can get more information about those right here: www.holley.com...
I also changed from a wet-sump oiling system to a dry sump system using parts from Moroso and you can get more info about that here:
www.moroso.com...
Thanks for watching this video. I really appreciate it. Please help support the channel by scoring some of my apparel at www.fsmgarage.com

Coil on plug means the coils are directly on the plug. Like the newer hemi motor has. What you have is coil near plug. Like an LS.

Mike and Joe, thanks for another great episode! You've added to my knowledge on dry-sump oiling systems. I'm stoked to see how your ignition and oiling upgrades translate into performance gains. The shots of spark plug wire assembly was cool. I also enjoy the humility and humor you both bring to the channel. Keep up the great content fellas!

One thing I learned from drilling for heim joints is to use a drill press. You do not want to waller out the hole’s. That 5/8’s bolt needs to fit as tight as possible in the hole else you may get wobble in your steering. And if the angle is off, the joint will not mount flush.

My dry sump tank holds 3 gallons. The tank and breather probably another 8 lbs. There is a lot of stuff inside that oil pan so there is a few extra pounds there. The idea is to take as much weight off as you can and put it where you need it. So your not saving weight you just have the advantage of moving it around. His battery on the opposite side is a good idea for weight.@@jasonbirch1182

Awesome video Mike. Sunday morning coffee, brownies and Finnegan's.......priceless. You did a great job explaining the glory of the dry sump. Your engine will make more power and last longer so how many $ is that worth? I'm building a 53 Chevy 1/2 ton drag and drive. Inline 6 292 (308) with a Ryan Falconer V-12 head(cross flow 340I/220E), billet crank, Billet solid roller cam and steel billet rods all by Crower. 5 stage dry sump. Electromotive direct fire EMS. Weiand 6-71 with 2 Quick Fuel 650 DP and 16 jet nitrous fogger plate. It should be well north of 1000 HP. 5 speed H pattern with a custom built Frankland Quick Change. A carbon fibre drive shaft will help mitigate the shock on the drive train. I also have EPAS Performance electric P/S and an electric A/C compressor with remote condenser with spal fan from down under. Sorry so long. Hope to see you there. Thank you for your time.

Good Morning. #669. Make a full and sturdy blower belt guard, in case the belt decides ""see ya", comes adrift and rips energized sparklers loose, and fuel lines. My vote is for the valve covers, custom style. Pull pins to remove all 4 coils and shorty Hemi plug wires staying on the bracket. A single? deutsch connector on the side of the bracket. Then the valve covers can come off. Yes, your covering the hemi valve covers with coils. I see safety. Gassers back in the day were SUPER sketch. Nickle and dime beer money held them together as they flung themselves down the track on Nitro. I don't see any of that with this car. Nice work Joe.

I used to work at Dan Olsen racing products and I am sure that they have a far superior oil pan than the Morroso unit. May cost more but they have much better oil scavenging and the built in windage tray pulls more oil off the crankshaft. AN additional advantage of a dry sump is the oil spends more time in the sump where it can cool therefore lowering the engine temp...making more HP.

Mike I work in HVAC industry when eyes started getting weak. My eye doctor suggested using contacts to correct my close vision as I need to be able to see schematics up close and see at distance. I started wearing a close up contact in my less dominate eye. My brain compensated automatically when switching from close to far away. We picked about 12 inches as the close up distance. I threw away my cheaters and I am loving it. Might want to try it. It took about 3 days for my brain to figure out which eye to use. For close up and far away. Love your content!! Thanks for sharing your talents and adventures!!

Can't weld with contacts. The UV rays can damage the contacts, and you eyes. Some say the welding helmet will protect them, but even a quick arc flash or some braille welding could put your eyes in serious jeopardy.
@BIllMcCambridge
@BIllMcCambridge Жыл бұрын
@@jimt9661 I am not trying to start a big argument. But I qualify this with I don't weld for a living but do weld fairly regular as a hobby. I researched the above statement and according to OSHA. Quote If properly protected in accordance with the OSHA Standards applicable to eye protection (ANSI Z87. 1-1968) during the welding operation the use of contact lenses is acceptable. The exception to this would be where the welding process may produce gas or vapors that could be harmful to employees wearing contact lenses. Unquote. The years I have spent hobby welding have shown no detrimental effects during my annual eye exams.
@jimt9661
@jimt9661 Жыл бұрын
@@BIllMcCambridge As I stated, in welding situations, an occasional arc flash can happen. As Osha indicates, WITH proper eye protection, this is fine. However, as OSHA regulations are not all knowing, situations exist where arc flash can occur outside of normal operating procedures. No argument made, you are correct, and we agree with the use of proper eye protection making it ok. However, in years of welding and such, I have gotten arc flashed on multiple occurrences. So, on the advise of multiple eye doctors, and some personal observations, I do not ever recommend contacts for use in welding environments. Besides the weld itself, often welding occurs in very high dust environments, which is also not good for contact users. But honestly, it's your eyes, and if you choose to use contacts, that is an acceptable choice for you. I've had to drive too many people to the hospital with eye injuries, mainly from grinder debris, even with a face shield to recommend anyone add in an extra layer of eye damage possibility (not probability, just possibility). You're not wrong! But life has told me that just because OSHA says it's OK, doesn't mean you're safe. From the date of incident to the change in OSHA regulation takes a long time, and if they determine that some other regulation would have prevented the injury, then no change occurs. For example, if you get arc flashed by the person you are working with, while your face shield is up, then OSHA regulations were not followed, so the injury was not within OSHA regs, so it is generally not considered as a needed rule change. So, technically, you are correct. Acceptable protection can provide for contact use. Field experience tells me that this is an unnecessary risk. I do appreciate the perspective though!
@jimt9661
@jimt9661 Жыл бұрын
I will add that the possibility of the actual contact lens causing the injury is remote, if not unprovable. The real danger is debris. I have had to hold a head or two while helping extract a contact lens with debris in it more than once. I don't think they are a good idea even in a non welding high dust environment.
@BIllMcCambridge
@BIllMcCambridge Жыл бұрын
@@jimt9661 thanks Jim for the feedback. I agree everyday welding job I personally would probably not recommend. For occasional fabrication it's a pro vs con for the user. In my experience the ability to be able to wear safety glass during fabrication is worth the risk of wearing contacts versus not being able to see up close when grinding, filing or welding. If your putting cheaters on makes it hard to use normal safety gear. But I get your side of debate and respect your opinions. Have a great day.

Hey fin, I dig your content so much . Being a 30year machinist and a lifelong hotrod enthusiast, I have to say I love your content . But can you do yourself a favor ? Please move your pump forward so that the pulley is completely flush with the front of the pump. That offset is going to cause you problems with wear on your bearing in the front of your pump. Too much leverage on it. I know you’ll have to re plumb, but a bearing failure on your pump ,would be catastrophic on your engine if that pump locks up. IMO what’s really important about a dry sump is you don’t have to worry about slosh, heck you can run the engine upside down and you won’t loose oil pressure.

As for the coils, you can get Engine Masters to do an episode on plug wire length and realize it makes no difference if its 1 ft or 6 ft. You can mount those coils inside the car, run the wires through the firewall, route them around a fake distributor and then into the spark plug holes to make it look like a 60s Gasser and hide those coils inside the car.

You might want to place a rubber gromet at the top of the spark plug leads under the t at the head covers less vibration and stop the water getting in.

"... make more power than it ever has." That's what you said last time it went to Pete's, good luck.

Most important feature of having drysump oiling system is at having constant oilsupply in any racing conditions, so NO oilsurge!! And byside a lower point of placing engine hence gravity point. For what wetsump can do better at its performance, is have windagetray and baffles in the oilpan. You can use a scavenging pump for the cranckcase pressure buildup . On the top cylinderheads good breather to exhaust collector connection sucks out the same even to much, so resctrictor may needed because It may even suck the valvecover gasket in! It had happend with Friend of mine, He has a Chevy 377 cid 700 HP N/A stroker at 8500 rpm in an Opel Rekord with this setup . I mentioned that , because some may not have the cash on a 1500 Euro drysump system. At least in Europe for a decent one. Then as many opose it wouldnt help: Polishing counterweights of cranck do have less as of oildrag on it. That is correct what you said, about unbalance by oil sticking or slinging around by or having on cranckshaft. Anyway, there are a lot of dragracers with good results with a trick wetsump.

Great to see Blasphemi on the go, I've been enjoying watching the videos on it. I can't help but think a dedicated coil on plug setup might have been easier for you, r35 coils can hold good power and neaten things up a bit

Great information, especially about the dry sump system. .. One thing I am interested in, as a beginner is, what part of the external oil pump actually feeds pressure to the engine, and, how is it accomplished ?
